It wasn’t hard to understand either as it only made sense a being with near unlimited access to souls on a multiversal level would also be able to watch the flow of time like reading a book. Anyways once I fully understood how the pairing tech worked I carefully put the parts back together and then reassembled my stuff good as new. I then took out the materials I’d need to replicate these parts and fed them to the maker thing before having it spit out eight pairs of the part to allow me to experiment with them.-
Whipping up an additional eight shields and guns of plain design I started my tests. I ended up wasting the first three pairing pieces as it turned out that you needed an effect part on the guns and shields to cause the pairing parts to work properly. Without it or if the parts only had one side of that interaction fulfilled the parts fried themselves via a feedback loop. Rather annoying that discovery but that was why I was experimenting to begin with. My fourth try was a semi functional product if rather basic.-
The way it worked was when the shield was depleted the paired pistol would activate an elemental fire effect on the next five shots. Obviously this was just a worse fucking elemental weapon at this point but that was why I said semi functional. It was proof of concept, the REAL good shit would require designing actual effects for the shield and weapon pair. Obviously I wasn’t going to go all out on these effects since I wanted production to be cheap. For the initial release I was thinking five different product lines with a unique paired effect for each line them.-
At the moment however I ran a separate test to see if I could pair up more than one gun to one shield and vice versa. If this proved possible I was going to revolutionize fucking teamwork. Imagine a squad of soldiers moving in perfect sync with one of them having a special shield used to trigger each of their weapons to activate their special effect at the same time. If implemented right squads like this would be a nightmare to face depending on what the effect was. It proved not so simply however as at most I could pair two guns to one shield otherwise the signal needed to be boosted.-
This in turn made a series of inefficiencies in the shield that caused the main function of the shield to be pathetically weak. While my idea was rendered moot I was still inspired by this discovery to modify my Chimera into an inverse element to my main gun. To do this I had to carefully make room in the chimaera for a pairing part. Then sync the signal to the one my shield and gun shared and then set the “trigger” function of the gun to cause the element it was on to become the opposite element of my gun.-
[Name: Adaptive Chimera+
Level: Pearlescent
Type: Revolver
Damage type: Explosive X4
Manufacturer: ATLAS/DRAKE
Customizations: Extended barrel, Expanded cylinder, textured grip, Digistruct autoloading mechanism, Status effect up
Affix: A beast of many forms- Fire, lightning, frost and poison
If the Adaptive Rebirth is equipped damage changes based on the element equipped to it.]
Nothing short of a complete overhaul was needed to perfect this gun for my kit. My original gun took care of hard, penetrating hits but the Chimera now filled the AOE gap I had without my powers.-
Besides the customizations I added to cause each shot to explode in elemental death I had also swapped out the elemental converter in the gun to one of my own make adding the frost element to the gun that it had been missing. Additionally since mine was based off Eridian tech it was no exaggeration to say the potency of the elemental effects were massively enhanced from before. I was quite happy with this outcome and headed to bed finally. Over the next couple of days I took Maya out with me to grab a couple of [Sharp sight-Common grade] traits for the eggs incubating in my house. –
I rationalized this by saying that since it was for friends there was no problem with fixing the things poor eyesight and definitely not because I was a perfectionist. Besides that I straight up lazed around for the rest of my time on Athenas. Fun fact, Maya makes an excellent body pillow.
“You sure I can’t come with you? It’s soooo booorrring here!” Maya practically begged.
“Fraid not, I wouldn’t have gone myself if I didn’t have my powers.” I said honestly.
“Can’t you at least stay longer then?” she asked hopefully.
“Nope, even now I have this feeling Pandora’s not done yet and don’t want to risk not being there for it.” I said seriously.
I meant it too as I had this twinge in my gut that said I didn’t want to stay away from Pandora long or there’d be consequences. I wasn’t sure what the source was but I definitely wasn’t going to ignore it. I gave her a deep kiss before my friends and I left Athenas for Eden six. When we got there things seemed normal enough until we stepped outside the manor only to find the old man and Morty shooting the birds out of the sky and counting while Brick was laid up on a lawn chair with a reflective panel getting a tan.-
“You look like you have been living well the past few days.” Lil said with a chuckle as we walked up to Brick.
“The old man is fun, took us hunting. Lots of good food too!” Brick said with a wide grin.
“Speaking of fun, what are those two up to anyways?” I asked curious.
“The old guy said he could out shoot Mordy and they chose the birds as targets.” he said with a shrug.
“That sounds about right. The old man takes pride in his marksmanship and won’t ever back down from a challenge to it.” I said with a chuckle.
Having an idea I walked over to the two of them casually and picked up a small rock.
“Shooting birds clearly isn’t good enough so how about I help you settle this decisively?” I suggested with a grin.
“i’m listenin.” the old man said with a raised eyebrow and Mordy seemed to agree.
“The idea’s simple. See this rock? i’m going to use my powers to whip it far out and at random through the air and you two take turns firing at it until one of you hits it. That person wins, fair right?” I said tossing the rock gently before catching it again.
The two men looked at each other for a moment before nodding. I held the rock flat on my palm and a small phase lock bubble enclosed it before zipping through the air like a crimson blur. I wasn’t joking when I said it would be far out as soon it was a barely visible red speck in the distance that zigzagged at random through the air.
“You’re up first old man.” I said and he took aim with sweat beading his brow in concentration.
“BANG!”
“Miss!” I called out the result.
Mordy went next and also missed. Seeing this both of them realized that this was going to be a lot harder than they were expecting. In truth I could have made them purposefully miss their shots but I honestly saw no reason to as this was already an incredibly difficult challenge to overcome.
