Chapter 133: Ah
“A group of armed bandits had raided the auction house under the Serlot Alchemy Guild. The raiders had killed many, including the security personnel as well as the people who had participated in the auction.”
“Concerns had been raised across the entirety of the Veltran Empire, as the robbery and slaughter had taken place in a bustling city and not some random place in the empire.”
“The families of the ones that had died in the incident had demanded justice to be brought for their loved ones. House Levaith is being questioned about the lack of effective response, as such an incident had taken place in their Duchy.”
“Questions had been raised against the Royal family, as such a situation is being called an act of incompetence. If the citizens cannot be safe in the core parts of the empire, then why are they the ones to pay taxes if their lives mean nothing to the empire?”
“As per the statements that we had taken note of from all the grieving families as well as the survivors, they had described the group as fairly professional and not some random bandits. So many are questioning the capability of the Levaith Duchy as well as the Veltran Royal family to let such a group grow without noticing anything.”
“Some survivors have also complained about the lack of security present at the auction house, and also about the lack of response to the attack. Even after the attack had begun and many were killed, there were no additional reinforcements to support them.”
“There’s also an unverified rumour that Arnold Levaith — who happens to be the brother of Duke Levaith — was also present at the auction but chose not to interfere in the battle.”
“Concerns are being raised, and many argue that the Levaith Duchy should be held accountable and made to pay for all losses, including bringing the criminals to justice.”
One after the other, the same headlines had dominated all the news channels across the entire world.
I too was currently sitting in the cafeteria as it was time for lunch, while the news was being played on the monitor that was placed at the far front of the dining hall for everyone to see.
It had a fairly big screen, so visibility wasn’t an issue, nor was hearing what had been said in the news.
“That’s ridiculous. How can they blame the Levaiths for something that was beyond anyone’s control?”
“Shut the fuck up! If not the Levaiths, then who do you think is responsible for the slaughter caused due to the negligence of the overlords of that territory?”
“Huh? But—”
“You like Ashlyn, right? Is that why you are defending the incompetence of the Levaiths?”
“No. Why would I?”
“But he isn’t wrong. Something like this has happened for the first time anywhere in the world. Though looting has been seen many times, the scale of slaughter that had occurred wasn’t common. No one could expect something like this.”
“Yeah. I agree with that.”
“Me too!”
“Fucking simps.”
“Huh?!”
“Oyy, bastard!”
The entire cafeteria was filled with the same sort of verbal conflict that was now on the verge of turning into a physical one.
Though the conflict wasn’t my point of focus, it had somehow caught my attention.
“Who’s Ashlyn?”
I asked John, who was sitting beside me.
Hearing my question, John moved his head, scanning the entire cafeteria, before leaning towards my ear.
Though I had an instinctive urge to push him away, I managed to restrain myself.
“Kael?! How could you not know one of the goddesses in the academy? She is literally revered by more than half of the academy. Also, do you even know about her hobbies? Dude, she had—”
I interrupted John, who was whispering in my ear, by pushing him away.
“Just tell me who she is.”
Was this guy a fanatic for every girl out there?
As for knowing this Ashlyn girl, I could deduce that she was related to the Levaiths and maybe was somewhat beautiful for this many guys to swoon over her.
But as I looked around the cafeteria, many of the students were moments away from jumping at each other’s throats.
I couldn’t understand the reasoning behind fighting over some girl.
Were they idiots?
“Alright! But dude, I have to let you know that you will have to update your general knowledge if you want to stay in the competition.”
“Get to the point.”
I spoke the words in a low voice, while also exerting the tiniest bit of mana pressure, which made John shudder in his seat.
“She is the eldest daughter of House Levaith and also a top student in the fourth year.”
“Okay.”
Her identity was all great, but still I didn’t think it was the sole reason behind such reactions by the students.
“…”
As I kept staring at John, the latter averted his gaze.
“She is among the best girls in the entire academy — that is why many guys are head over heels for her. And Ashlyn Levaith is also the head of the Disciplinary Committee and one of the main contenders for the position of Student Council President.”
Ah.
That explained it.
“So…”
“Yes, many of the students here are from her faction, so defending the interests of their leader is what they are currently doing.”
John spoke as he looked back at the students, who were now out in the open, standing with their groups and confronting the ones who were speaking ill of the Levaiths.
Student Council President, huh.
Every student that was admitted to the academy was from prestigious noble houses, so all of them were smart enough not to bring any harm to their houses.
But if supporting the Student Council President was their main goal, then surely they would take the risk of fighting on the academy grounds.
As the noble house whose direct descendant manages to secure the position of the President gains far greater leverage on the global stage — as that practically means their house has the support of many others—
As for becoming President, one needed to have the support of other council members, who were the heirs to many great houses across all races and were also monsters in their own rights.
