Chapter 81: Coffee Or Tea
This…
Looking at the building before me, I had blanked out.
This was supposed to be a small city on the outskirts of the Veltran Empire.
Why the hell had they made such a huge building?!
Just imagining the money spent on its construction…
It was an investment!
Yes, that was the only reason for such a grand display. The money wasn’t lost!
The guards at the entrance watched me with scrutiny but didn’t stop me from entering the bank.
I might have looked like a kid… Well, I was still technically a kid.
But my rich attire seemed to have stopped them from questioning me.
They wouldn’t have stopped me. Why would they?
I might have become a potential customer.
It’s just that when one became big enough, such theatrics were needed to project the power and influence of the institution.
The atmosphere inside was fitting for the bank’s name.
Every corner of the bank screamed of royalty. The floor was of pure marble, with golden strips stretched in patterns across its surface.
As I moved towards the counter, I could see people in different attires—each exuding the air of wealth.
The counter had a sign saying ’Inquiry’ above it.
A woman sat behind the desk, wearing a formal yet elegant outfit.
She appeared to be in her mid-thirties with a polite smile across her above-average face.
“How may I help you?”
As I stood before the counter, the woman initiated the conversation.
Even her voice felt angelic.
Did it have something to do with her job?
“Yes, I wanted to meet with the bank manager.”
I answered while taking out a card at the same time.
“That… won’t be possible. The manager is currently busy in a meeting and—”
She paused as I passed her the card.
“Log it into your server.”
She looked at me for a second longer before proceeding to check my credentials.
The card that I had handed over wasn’t a normal one.
It was an exclusive card to the database of all institutions under D.X.
The card had my mana signature imprinted on it. Once entered into the database, it would be enough for the woman to know my identity and—
I looked toward the lady before me, as she had a surprised expression on her face.
“This… Please wait in the lobby for a minute. I will contact the manager about your visit.”
My identity had been recorded with the highest level of treatment in the database.
In short, I had similar standing to the head of the bank itself, or even more.
The woman at the counter seemed like a normal employee, so the information that she could access would have been limited.
Or else she wouldn’t have had such a reaction to my identity.
The higher the clearance one had, the better they would know who I was.
I made my way towards one of the sofas and made myself comfortable.
A staff member quickly arrived with a tray, offering me drinks of different varieties.
Honestly, it was my first time seeing such myriad colours of drinks.
Haa…
Rich people really had it different.
As I leaned back on the sofa, the lady from the counter approached me with hurried footsteps.
“Sir, please follow me.”
She made a ninety-degree bow while making the request.
The manager seemed to have given her a scolding…
Poor girl!
As I stood up from my seat, the lady began to guide me towards the manager’s office.
I had half-expected the guy to come here himself, but that would have been unprofessional.
I wasn’t one to bully my employees.
Though they might not have any idea about their real boss!
The lady’s attitude towards me seemed to have attracted the attention of many, as I could feel several gazes directed our way.
The staff at Syma Royal rarely displayed such behaviour toward customers.
They were polite, but that was it.
It didn’t matter whether you were a commoner, a noble, or a royal… Everyone received equal treatment irrespective of their standing in society.
The way to the office was short, as with just a few turns we had reached the most deserted area in the bank.
There were no people present besides the two of us.
The lady pushed open the door and, with a bow, gestured for me to enter.
As I stepped in, a wide room greeted me.
It was an office, but it looked more like a hall to me.
The manager, who had been pacing back and forth, stopped in his tracks as he noticed my presence.
“Sir, please have a seat.”
He rushed towards me, guiding me to one of the couches.
The manager extended his hand, to which I replied with a small handshake… Or I tried to.
But the guy gripped my hand, his palm sweating.
“I am sorry for any inconvenience that I might have caused you.”
The manager hurriedly spoke.
“It’s oka—”
“And I wanted to come down in order to greet you, but my position prevents that. I am really sorry if that had offended you in any way.”
Without letting me complete my sentence, the manager rambled nonstop.
Knowing that words would have been useless, I just nodded.
Seemingly returning to his normal state, the manager let go of my hand.
As I leaned back on the couch, one leg crossed over the other, the manager pressed a bell beside him and a guy with refreshments appeared at the door.
“Please.”
Over his insistence, I accepted the cup of coffee—or was it tea?
Why was the colour so faint?
“My name’s Harvey, and I had just recently been promoted to this position.”
Ah.
That explained it.
This guy still hadn’t gotten used to his position of power.
But there was another thing that had now bugged my mind.
It was Julien who had entered my credentials into the database… I needed to check them once, as the extreme reaction from the manager surprised me.
Knowing his position, I had expected him to have more information about my identity, but wasn’t this over-the-top treatment?
Not that I disliked it!
