Lana stared at Dickson for a few seconds, weighing her options. She bit her lower lip, eyes tired and dark from sleep deprivation, before finally shaking her head. “It’s not up to me to tell you,” she said quietly. “Liam will tell you when he wakes up.”

Dickson didn’t press further, but his eyes lingered on her face, reading the tension there. Before he could say anything else, the sharp sound of the front gate opening pierced the silence. Both their heads turned as the familiar roar of Lilith’s V8 engine died down.

The car door opened, and Lilith stepped out. Inside the room, Liam was still unconscious on the bed. Ella was seated at his side, adjusting his pillows, trying to keep him comfortable, while Ann gently wiped the sweat off his forehead with a cloth. His skin was pale, his breaths uneven, and the wound in his abdomen still leaked small trails of dark blood despite being partially dressed.

The atmosphere in the room was heavy—silent, except for the occasional soft groan that escaped Liam’s lips.

Lilith entered like a storm. “Move.”

Ella blinked and looked up. “What?”

“Move,” Lilith repeated, firmer this time. “All of you.”

She didn’t shout, but her tone left no room for argument.

She placed her hand gently under his neck, lifting his head slightly, then brought the vial to his lips.

“Come on,” she whispered low enough only for herself to hear. “You don’t get to die on me. Not like this.”

The moment the liquid touched his tongue, they all saw it: the blue contents let off a fine mist like chilled vapor, almost like it was steaming, but cold. It hissed faintly as it made contact with the heat of his body.

Then Liam twitched.

A violent shiver ran through him, his fingers curling suddenly. The flushed redness of his skin began to vanish, replaced by a ghostly pallor. His lips turned pale blue, and a light layer of frost seemed to form over the edges of the bandages wrapped around his torso.

“Holy shit,” Dickson murmured.

Lilith watched closely, eyes focused only on Liam. His body, which moments ago burned like a furnace, now chilled to the point that his breath misted in the air. His eyelids fluttered. A low groan escaped his mouth as his hand jerked toward the wound, even in his unconscious state.

“His body’s rejecting it,” Lana said with wide eyes. “Or trying to.”

“No,” Lilith said, still cradling his head. “He’s stabilizing. I was told this might happen.”

“By who?” Ann asked, voice soft and wary.

Lilith didn’t answer. She kept watching Liam as his trembling slowed, then stopped. He was still breathing—but now every breath was calm, and the sweat on his forehead began to dry.

Ann reached out hesitantly and placed a hand on his shoulder. It was cold to the touch.

“What the hell was that stuff?” Dickson finally asked.

Lilith closed the vial, now empty. “A gift,” she said flatly. “One that came with a price.”

Lana tilted her head. “A price?”

Lilith stood up and looked them all over. “You don’t want to know.”

Then she looked down at Liam again, a flicker of emotion finally breaking through her cold exterior.

Liam’s eyes suddenly sprang open.

Everyone froze.

The room went silent as the impossible happened. His gaze fluttered open slowly, groggy and clouded with pain—but conscious. Alive. The first face that came into view was Lilith’s. Her piercing feline eyes locked onto his with a weight that said a thousand things she wasn’t saying aloud. Then came Lana, hovering just behind, her green eyes wide with restrained emotion. Dickson stood stiffly at the foot of the bed, arms crossed, like a man trying to make sense of chaos. Ann and Ella were on either side, motionless, watching.

They all stared at him, waiting for something.

Liam’s throat moved as he tried to swallow, and then, weakly, he muttered, “Remove the bandage.”

Lana blinked in confusion. “What? Why?”

Dickson didn’t hesitate. “You girls ask too many damn questions.”

He was already at work, fingers unwrapping the soaked layers from Liam’s waist. The cloth was stiff and heavy with dark liquid, crackling slightly as he peeled it off. But the moment he undid the last wrap, everyone recoiled slightly.

A thick, glowing red liquid, like molten lava, flowed out of the wound. It dripped onto the bedsheet with a faint hiss, like acid on fabric, steaming as it touched the air. The bandage had been holding it in all this time.

Liam’s back arched slightly with a long exhale. Relief.

Right before their eyes, the wound on his stomach started closing—visibly. The muscle stitched itself together in slow motion, threads of sinew reconnecting like it was being rewound. The skin followed shortly after, growing over the muscle, stretching and sealing itself until there was nothing left but a faint red hue. No scar. No scab. Just a memory of a wound that had nearly killed him.

Dickson, crouched closest, saw everything. Not just the healing—but he heard it. The subtle cracking and shifting of tissue moving at unnatural speed. His stomach churned, his jaw clenched, and he felt his mind teetering on the edge of comprehension.

“What the actual f—” he started but stumbled back instead.

His back hit the wall and he stayed there for a second, eyes flicking between the others.

He looked at Liam again. Not like a friend. Not like a brother.

Like a stranger. Like something not quite human.

Ann and Ella exchanged a glance. Lana lowered her head with a sigh.

Lilith just watched silently.

Dickson’s lips parted. “Wait a damn second… y’all knew about this?”

No one answered.

He rubbed both hands down his face. “So what the hell is he? A vampire? Werewolf? Cyborg? What am I missing?”

Still silence. Then Liam coughed. A dry, painful sound, but he was recovering fast. “It’s… complicated,” Liam whispered.

Dickson laughed—just once, but it was empty. “Yeah. No shit.”

He began pacing, hands on his hips. “Twelve hours. Twelve! I’ve been with you people for twelve hours and I’ve been hearing fantastical shits, and now I see this dude heal like Wolverine on steroids.”

Then he stopped and turned to them with a look of half-mad realization.

“Let me get this straight…” he said slowly, pointing at Liam. “You can heal. You’re strong. Like, really strong.”

Lana tilted her head slightly. “Dickson…”

But he wasn’t finished.

His eyes were wide now. Filled not with fear. But with wonder. Curiosity. Excitement.

“THIS IS FREAKING COOL!!!!” he shouted.

Ann jumped. Ella blinked. Lilith smirked.

Dickson threw his hands up like he had just been accepted into Hogwarts.

“I don’t know what the hell this is, but I’m in. Sign me up. Holy shit, this is wild!”

Everyone exchanged glances, unsure if this was the relief they’d been waiting for or the beginning of something even more chaotic.

But Liam… for the first time in days… genuinely smiled faintly.
