Chapter 260: Chapter 260 Batcave
Liam and Lana stood at the edge of the cliff, eyes fixed on what lay ahead.
Below them, instead of a river winding through the trees like Liam had hoped, there was only a deafening waterfall—raging and monstrous, crashing down a steep rock face that looked like it fell into the abyss. Even in the darkness of the night, the white spray of water gleamed faintly, and jagged rocks jutted out below like fangs waiting to shred whatever came near.
Liam’s brows furrowed as he stared down. His grip around Vanessa tightened. Her body was limp but still breathing—barely. The wind whipped around them, and the distant sound of barking dogs reminded him that there was no turning back.
They had minutes, maybe seconds.
He turned, quickly scanning the tree line.
The dogs were coming.
Fast.
“Lana,” he said calmly.
She turned to him, her eyes flickering between his face and the deadly fall below.
“Hug me,” Liam said, lifting his arm slightly.
“What?” she asked, her voice full of confusion.
“Hold on to me. Now.”
“Wait, Liam—are you saying you’re gonna jump?!”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, without warning, he wrapped his free arm tightly around her waist. She gasped.
“Liam, no—wait!”
But it was already too late.
He stepped forward and leapt from the edge.
Lana screamed—a pure, panicked sound as her eyes shut tight and her body clenched in fear. The wind howled around them, louder and louder, as gravity pulled them downward. She braced herself for the sharp pain of water or rocks or death.
But none came.
No crash. No splash.
Just—air.
Fast, rushing, freezing air.
And something else.
She slowly opened her eyes.
They weren’t falling anymore.
They were soaring.
Two massive, glowing-white wings extended from Liam’s back, cutting through the sky with powerful strokes. The moonlight shimmered against the feathers, casting ethereal light as they sped through the clouds at incredible speed.
“What the hell…” she whispered, eyes wide.
The ground disappeared beneath them, replaced by the blanket of forest stretching endlessly under the night. The air stung her skin and whipped her hair backward as Liam carried both her and Vanessa effortlessly, wings thundering with every powerful beat.
“You’re crazy!!” she shouted over the roar of the wind.
Liam grinned as he looked at her. “You think this is crazy? I’m just getting started.”
Then—with a loud boom—he flapped again, harder this time, and they shot through the air like a missile. Trees became streaks of dark green, and the stars overhead blurred as they cut through the sky.
Back on the cliff, a group of heavily armed men finally arrived.
The dogs at the front came to a stop, sniffing at the edge of the drop. One of them barked once, then started pacing in confused circles. The trail had ended. Completely.
The men in tactical gear scanned the terrain with night vision goggles. One of them stepped forward and stared down the steep rock face.
“Nothing down there,” he muttered. “No bodies. No blood. No splash.”
“Did they… jump?” another whispered.
The sound of footsteps behind them made them part quickly.
A man approached.
Unlike the others, he wasn’t wearing tactical gear. He didn’t have armor or heavy weaponry. Just a sleek black suit, perfectly tailored, and shiny dress shoes that somehow didn’t pick up dirt despite the forest.
His eyes glowed faintly red behind slim glasses.
There was an eerie silence when he arrived—like the trees themselves held their breath.
The nearest soldier approached him cautiously and saluted. “Sir. They’re gone.”
The man in the suit said nothing.
“We… we tracked them here. Dogs followed the trail perfectly, but… it ends here. They must’ve jumped, sir.”
A faint hum of displeasure rumbled in the man’s throat.
“No sign of them below,” the soldier added. “No wreckage. No sound. It’s like they vanished.”
The man in the suit turned his head slightly, his expression unreadable. Then he spoke, his voice cool and calm—but it carried the weight of command and death.
“I want full lockdown protocols initiated. Effective immediately.”
The soldier blinked. “Sir?”
“They are no longer suspects. They are enemies of the state,” the man in the suit said. “Liam. Lana. And the officer Vanessa Carter.”
He walked forward, his polished shoes crunching against the edge of the cliff.
“Put out a black notice. Wanted list. Highest classification.”
“But… what about civilian panic?” another asked nervously.
The man didn’t turn. “Keep it internal. If this reaches the public, it’ll cause hysteria. No posters. No media coverage. This is to remain a shadow operation.”
The team nodded, but before the first soldier could give the command through his comms, the man added one final line—his voice so cold it could’ve frozen time itself.
“If they’re spotted…”
He turned his head just slightly, glowing red eyes meeting the soldier’s frozen stare.
“…they are to be executed. No warnings. No negotiations.”
The words landed like a blade.
The soldier stiffened. “Y-Yes, sir.”
“Good,” the man said, and began walking away, already pulling out a phone. “They won’t survive the week.”
And behind him, the black-clad team spread out again—hunting ghosts under the moonlight.
****
Liam looked down at the dark clearing below, Vanessa’s mansion coming into full view under the moonlight. With a subtle shift of his shoulders, his wings sliced downward. The air pushed around him with force as he descended like a silent predator. Lana clutched him tighter, her face buried in his chest, still tense from the mad flight through the skies.
Then—with a whisper of wind and a soft crunch of grass—he landed gently in Vanessa’s private garden compound.
He knelt slightly to absorb the impact and then slowly rose to his feet. His wings shimmered in the moonlight for a split second longer before folding inward and vanishing altogether, like they had been swallowed by the night.
Lana blinked and shook her head, still in disbelief at what she’d just experienced. “We need to carry her inside. Now.”
Liam nodded, his expression set, sharp with purpose. Vanessa’s body was limp in his arms. Lana reached for the mansion door, but Liam moved ahead and shoved it open.
It creaked as it swung inward—heavy mahogany, polished to a gleam. The mansion’s entrance spilled into the main sitting room, lit by the moonlight bleeding in through tall windows. The place was just as Liam remembered it: classic old money style.
But there was no time to admire anything.
Because the moment they stepped over the threshold, the house reacted.
Clank! Clank! Clank!
All the doors slammed shut at once with brutal force. The sound echoed through the mansion like a cannon blast. Windows all around them clicked and sealed, thick security bolts sliding into place. Even the curtains seemed to fall in unison, blocking the moonlight out completely.
The entire mansion was suddenly in full lockdown.
Lana jumped. “What the hell—?”
Liam’s head whipped around. He shifted Vanessa in his arms protectively, scanning the ceiling and walls. “Is this a trap?” he growled.
But then something even stranger happened.
Just across from them, beneath the grand mantle where an old fireplace sat cold and dormant—a low click sounded.
The stones at the base shifted. The entire hearth vibrated slightly, then began to rotate inward. Slowly, the back wall of the fireplace creaked open, revealing a descending staircase. A trail of low, soft lights flickered to life along the edges of the hidden stairway, illuminating the path downward.
Liam stared in disbelief.
Lana’s voice broke the silence. “I… I think we’re supposed to carry her down there.”
Liam didn’t move right away. He just stood there, frozen for a moment, staring at the secret stairwell as if it might vanish at any second.
He had known Vanessa for a while now. Confident. Gorgeous. An excellent shot. A respected officer. But a hidden bunker inside her mansion? A lockdown mechanism that triggered just from walking in?
He looked at Lana. “Before today, I didn’t even know she had a place like this.”
“Yeah,” Lana whispered. “Me neither. whatever this is… it’s not normal.”
He shifted Vanessa slightly in his arms and glanced toward the stairs again.
“Let’s go.”
With that, Liam took the first step down, Lana following right behind him.
The moment they crossed the threshold of the fireplace and stepped into the stairwell, the house seemed to… exhale.
Above them, the doors unlocked. A gentle series of clicks and clunks echoed from every direction as bolts retracted and windows unsealed. The fireplace behind them slowly rotated shut again, sealing them in complete silence.
It was like nothing had ever happened.
They descended slowly, the sound of their footsteps swallowed by the deep, carpeted stairs. The air shifted—it was cooler down here, with a sterile crispness that felt more like a high-tech lab than a home.
Finally, the narrow corridor opened into a massive underground chamber.
The lights came on.
One after the other, rows of LED strips lining the ceiling flickered to life, bathing the cavernous room in clean, white brilliance.
Liam stopped mid-step.
It looked like something out of a vigilante comic book.
There were weapons on the walls—dozens of them. Knives, pistols, stun guns, grappling devices. Heavy-duty rifles lined one side of the room, stored in sleek, armored cabinets. On another wall were high-tech suits—sleek, form-fitting armor with reinforced joints, helmets, and glowing visors.
But they weren’t general-purpose combat suits.
They were feminine in design. Tailored specifically for Vanessa’s frame. There were at least six of them, each one varying slightly in function—one designed for stealth, another clearly built for mobility, another bristling with weapons and heavy armor plating.
Screens flickered alive on the far wall—surveillance feeds of different parts of the city. Heat maps. License plate readers. Crime logs.
There was even a map pinned with red strings and notes, leading back to The Crimson Hand.
Lana walked slowly forward, her footsteps echoing in the wide space. Her eyes wide with disbelief.
She stared at a suit with dark violet plating and glowing teal lines running down the spine.
Then she turned to Liam and said, “What the hell is going on here?”
Liam didn’t answer at first.
He was still taking it all in.
Vanessa’s secret life had just slammed into him like a brick wall. He knew she was smart. He knew she was more than just a pretty face. But this?
This was something else entirely.
“She’s… a vigilante,” he muttered.
Lana turned toward him, still stunned. “Like… Batman?”
Liam nodded slowly. “Yeah. Like Batman. And we just stumbled into her Batcave.”
They both stood silently for a moment, still surrounded by the flickering monitors and glowing suits. Vanessa stirred lightly in his arms, her fingers twitching slightly.
Liam looked down at her unconscious form and frowned.
Whatever this place was… it was designed for her. Built by her. Protected by her.
He looked toward a small medical table in the corner of the room. There was a sleek, silver device on it that looked like a compact scanner—possibly a medical tool.
He turned to Lana. “Help me lay her down. Maybe there’s something here that can stabilize her.”
Lana nodded quickly, pulling herself together.
