Suddenly, Liam’s phone rang just as he leaned in, lips inches from Lana’s. The timing couldn’t have been worse. He sighed, letting go of her waist as she quickly slipped away, muttering something about needing to get dressed. Her robe fluttered lightly as she disappeared, and he took a deep breath, pulling out his phone.

He stared at the name for a second, already imagining her irritated tone before even picking up. When he finally answered, he didn’t even get the chance to say a word before her voice, sharp and cold, pierced through the speaker.

“Where the fuck have you been?”

Liam blinked, trying to keep his composure. “At home…?”

Liam raised a brow. “Okay… What do you need me for?”

But she didn’t answer that. Instead, her voice softened just slightly—an unfamiliar tone that caught him off guard.

“How are you feeling?” she asked, almost cautiously. “Do you feel anything… happening to you?”

Liam frowned, confused. “Did you hit your head or something?”

Lilith let out a groan and immediately ended the call.

He chuckled, staring at the phone like it had just told a joke. That change in her voice—it was genuine.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket and turned around just in time to hear the low hum of a car pulling up to the front of the house. The vehicle was sleek, black, and unmistakably part of Lilith’s fleet. The driver stepped out with a rigid posture, eyes scanning the street like something was already wrong.

Liam could read the tension written across the man’s face. Something serious was going on.

He gave a slight nod of acknowledgment to the driver and stepped aside, waiting for Lana, who, of course, was still upstairs. She’d said she needed to dress—but dressing for Lana was never a ten-minute job.

He waited by the door, checking his watch, arms folded. Fifteen minutes passed, then twenty then thirty. Just when he was about to yell upstairs, he heard the sound of boots clicking against the floor.

The jacket, styled in a crisp tan-gold color, had a pleated skirt that barely covered the tops of her thighs, leaving just enough to tease but not too much to ruin the mystery. Her arms were hugged in long black sleeves, adding a touch of contrast and edge.

But the centerpiece was her boots.

They were jet black and thigh-high, hugging her legs like a second skin, glossy with a leather finish that gleamed under the hallway light. Each step she took in them was deliberate, confident.

Her hair fell in waves, still a little damp, glowing with the hint of copper-red streaks as it framed her face perfectly. Her makeup was minimal, but her lips—those lips—were a soft, natural pink that made Liam’s eyes flicker down involuntarily.

He swallowed hard.

“Damn…” he muttered under his breath before quickly shaking his head to snap out of it. “Focus.”

Lana raised an eyebrow as she noticed him staring, smirking slightly but saying nothing. She stepped past him and headed toward the car without a word, leaving a faint trail of sweet perfume behind.

Liam inhaled once, shook himself out of it, and followed her.

They got into the back of the car together, and the driver pulled out immediately, not waiting for small talk. The atmosphere was quiet, but tense. Whatever Lilith wanted, it wasn’t casual.

The elevator finally opened with a soft chime, and Liam and Lana stepped out into the hallway of Lilith’s penthouse suite. The moment they approached her front door, Liam’s instincts began to prickle. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

Liam glanced at Lana, his jaw tightening. Without a word, he pushed it open, and what they saw on the other side made them both freeze.

The place was a disaster zone.

Broken bottles were scattered across the marble floor, jagged glass glittering like ice shards under the morning light. The scent of spilled alcohol hung thick in the air, sharp and nauseating. Wine and liquor soaked the carpet and pooled near the corners of the room. The once pristine furniture was overturned. One of the velvet chairs lay broken against the wall. The expensive glass table was shattered completely, its metal frame twisted as if someone had crashed into it with full force.

Lana’s voice was barely a whisper. “My God…”

Liam didn’t respond. His eyes swept the room quickly before he called out, loud and sharp.

“Lilith!”

For a few seconds, there was silence. Then, they heard slow, uneven footsteps approaching from the hallway.

Lilith appeared.

She was a shadow of herself.

Her long golden-blonde hair was tousled, strands sticking to the side of her face. Her eyes were heavy-lidded and bloodshot. Her normally confident, feline-like gaze was dulled by exhaustion and pain. She limped slowly toward them, dragging one leg behind her. Her nightgown was torn at the hem, smeared with dirt and blood. Her arms were covered in bruises, and just under her bangs, a massive purple mark throbbed on the side of her forehead.

Liam rushed to her without hesitation, catching her gently by the shoulders. “Are you alright?”

She nodded weakly. “The Crimson Hand… they sent someone to kill me.”

Liam’s jaw clenched. His whole body tensed. But his face showed nothing. No rage. No surprise. Just a terrifying, cold stillness. The type of stillness that only came before a storm.

Lilith didn’t even notice.

Lana stepped forward, eyes wide with concern. “How did he get in? How did someone reach you like this?”

Lilith let out a tired breath. “I don’t know. He just knocked. I opened the door… and it started. He didn’t say anything. No warning. He just attacked.”

Liam’s voice came low and deep, barely holding back his fury. “Did you see his face?”

Lilith nodded. “I didn’t just see it. I killed him.”

Lana and Liam blinked.

“Wait… what?” Lana’s voice cracked.

Lilith rolled her eyes like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “What do you take me for?”

She turned and limped slowly toward her bedroom, Liam and Lana following closely behind. The hallway was just as messy as the living room—scratches on the wall, bloody handprints on the floor, and torn curtains trailing across the polished tiles.

When they entered her bedroom, the air turned cold.

There, in the center of the room, lay a body.

A man. Face down. Unmoving.

His clothes were soaked with blood. A knife was still embedded in his back, the hilt rising up like a grave marker. His neck was twisted at a brutal angle, and there were icy burn marks across his forearms.

Liam took a slow step forward, his eyes locked onto the figure. Something about the man felt familiar. Too familiar.

Then he saw the side of the man’s face.

His heart skipped.

“Isn’t this your spy?!” Liam turned to Lilith, stunned. “This is him. The guy you sent to infiltrate the Crimson Hand!”

Lana’s hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide with disbelief.

Lilith nodded solemnly. “Yes. This was him.”

The room fell silent.

Liam’s mind was reeling. The man they trusted to gather intelligence had returned. Not with information. Not with warnings. But as an assassin, attempting to take out the leader of Black Lotus herself.

It didn’t make sense.

Unless…

He’d been turned.

Lilith sat carefully on the edge of her bed, wincing as she shifted her leg. “He said nothing. Not even a sound. His eyes were empty—like a puppet. As if someone else was inside him. He wasn’t even human anymore.”

Liam’s hands tightened into fists. “So they got to him. Twisted him. Used him to get close.”

“And nearly succeeded,” Lana muttered, her voice tense.

Lilith looked down at her bruised arms, her voice quieter now. “If I had hesitated even a second more… I’d be dead.”

The words hung heavy in the air.

Liam stared down at the corpse again. This wasn’t just an attempt on Lilith’s life. This was a message. A brutal, silent message from the Crimson Hand.

Silence fell. Liam’s jaw tightened as he took in the scene.

Then, without warning, he turned on his heel.

“Where are you going?” Lana asked quickly.

Lilith narrowed her eyes. “Don’t go do anything stupid. The city’s crawling with police. We can’t afford any more attention.”

Liam stopped just before the door. He didn’t look back. His voice was low and sharp.

“Keep her safe,” he said to Lana. “She doesn’t leave this house.”

Lana blinked. “Wait—what? Liam—”

Lilith stepped forward, wincing. “You better not be going to start a war. I’m warning you. Don’t cause trouble.”

Liam finally turned, and his expression was carved from ice.

“I’m not causing trouble,” he said coldly. “I’m just going to say hi.”

He walked out, the door shutting behind him like a guillotine.
