Chapter 65: An S Class and her Lieutenants
Aunt Dina was still squishing Brent’s face, her hands surprisingly warm. Brent wondered if that was from her powers since it always seemed that S Class powers leaked out in one way or another. Rhys’ was just the most obvious case. In Sergei’s case, if he wasn’t focusing sometimes things would begin to float around him.
It was especially interesting when it came to…moments where he was very focused on other things.
“Those fucking fuckers. I’m even more pissed. Wait, is it someone from Kellen’s Guild? How are they not here already if you’re making statements like this? Don’t they know where you are right now?” She asked and Brent felt extremely uncomfortable as she asked her questions. His gaze shifted from the fiery gaze of Aunt Dina towards the windows overlooking the city below.
“No one knows…I’m from here.” Brent admitted. “Not even Kellen.” Brent slid his gaze back to Aunt Dina and watched as realisation dawned across her face. She was learning a lot about Brent rather quickly. Normally, this would have terrified Brent. He was a rather reserved person, but for some reason he felt like he could trust Aunt Dina and her group of Lieutenants.
Was it because she was close with Kellen and his family? Maybe, but Brent felt like the other reason why he felt he could tell her was because she was from the city. She knew what Brent’s brother was like. She had been on the receiving end of his monstrosity and had come out on the other side.
She would be able to understand how Brent ticked easier than anyone else probably could.
“Oh. Not even your partner?” She asked and Brent gave his head a shake.
“No. Not even him.” He admitted, embarrassed thinking of him that way. God, he hoped he was right. It would be terribly embarrassing if he said that he was his partner and the other man turned around and disagreed with him.
However, he didn’t think that was the case. Not with the man under while Kellen was in the gate.
“Plus, he can’t just leave whenever he wants. He has…promises he has to keep.” Brent admitted, blushing more. Aunt Dina, a Captain herself, blinked. Then her eyes narrowed.
“Brent Jameson, tell me that you and Kellen are not following in the same footsteps right now.” She ordered, her voice firm. Brent felt a shiver run down his spine. It was a clear order from a Captain, but Brent wasn’t good at following orders, even ones from S Classes. He’d always been a little rule breaker, even as a kid.
It had gotten him in even more trouble with the James family as they realised he couldn’t be controlled with a leash if he was able to escape them. Even after they took his arm, it was Brent who decided to listen to them for his own safety, not because they had backed him into a corner.
“I am not jumping classes.” Brent told her and Aunt Dina growled. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and then sighed. Her shoulders fell as she finally released his face, patting his cheek a little too hard as she withdrew her hands.
“Damn Field Guides are always looking for a damn thrill. It’s a damn miracle that Henry didn’t discover it or else Ellie would have had a stroke by now.” She muttered and Brent grinned. That was a new take, and it did not surprise Brent in the slightest. Brent knew that Kellen took after his parents quite a bit, but it was nice to learn that Henry was who Kellen got his dangerous streak from, not his Mom.
He also couldn’t deny the claim either. Brent had gone to the front lines for a reason. Whether it had been to die, or hide, he had come away with a love of the thrill going into gates gave him. It just so happened that there was also an endless supply of other things that Brent had enjoyed in the past.
Past tense, because he had a feeling when a certain Captain woke up, Brent would be scooped up completely and any dealings with past flings were going to be gone. Hence, Brent being upfront with Xavier.
He was a thrill seeker, not a man who wanted to anger someone he cared about.
“You know what? I could see it. Henry would make a good Field Guide. He’d be the most dangerous one. Kellen says I’m the good cop and he’s the bad cop. Henry would fall into my category.” Brent said with a grin and Aunt Dina shook her head with a sigh.
“Alright. Point made, Brent. Why don’t I introduce you to everyone and we can speak a bit more about what happened today?” She suggested and Brent nodded, feeling the pleasure slip from him.
Right. He’d been at a party only a few hours ago, drunk, about to have an okay time, when things took a turn for the worst. He’d killed people. Bad people, but he’d still killed people.
Outside of the gates.
Brent let out a soft sigh, the realisation dawning on him and Aunt Dina reached over, giving him a squeeze.
“You alright?” She asked quietly, noticing the change in Brent. Brent nodded, a shiver running down his spine again.
“Yeah. I am. Just…realising what I did today.” Brent admitted and Aunt Dina, along with everyone else, had deep sympathy in their gaze.
“You did the right thing, Brent. More people could have died if you hadn’t.” Esper Parker told him. “Hell, I could have died if you hadn’t. They always go after Espers as well.” He told him. That did make Brent feel better, but only a little bit.
“I just…this is going to sound strange but…it feels weird doing it outside of a gate?” Brent said hesitantly, glancing around at the faces staring at him. Several froze, including the Healer, Esper Parker, and a third person that Brent hadn’t been introduced to but was sitting at the island with Xavier and Esper Parker.
Aunt Dina gave him a squeeze before she burst into laughter again. It didn’t sound as unhinged as her laughter before.
“Did you just admit to murder inside of gates?” She asked and Brent gave her a rather stern look.
“It isn’t murder inside of gates if the bodies can’t be found, there is no evidence, and no witnesses.” Brent defended, huffing. “Kellen told me that, and I believe that advice is from his Mom.” He sounded stuffy, because he was. He had panicked the first time it had happened, and it was Kellen and a few other Field Guides who had talked him down from the situation.
It happened. It was usually an accident, and if they were stupid enough to get caught in a gate, there was nothing Brent could do. Sign the forms and move on was the motto of most Field Guides. Brent had learned it relatively quickly since he seemed to attract…a certain sort of Esper.
“It’s…rather sound when it comes to the front lines and legal advice.” Someone said, and Brent looked over and realised that there was a small woman tucked behind the Healer. She was tapping away on her phone and glanced up when she felt Brent’s gaze on her. She grinned. She had rosy cheeks, long black hair and brown eyes. They were slightly elongated just enough that Brent couldn’t get a grasp of where she was from, just that she was a mix of…something.
“Are you a lawyer?” He asked cautiously, and her grin grew.
“Yeah. For the Guild. Name’s Jennifer Gardner. I would have suggested the same thing if I was speaking to you about something that happened on the front lines.” She said with a wink before sure turned to Aunt Dina. “We should introduce everyone before we get too lost in conversations.” She told her, and Aunt Dina let out a small grumble of agreement.
“You’re right. Brent, that’s Jenny, our lawyer. Next to her is our Healer, Vance. You can just call him Dick if he’s bothering you.” She said without any explanation. Vance just gave a soft smile, in response and Brent wondered how the man could bother him. “Next to you is Zaria. She’s just a regular Esper, not in charge of anything in particular. One of my newer Lieutenants.” Dina admitted and Zaria stuck her tongue out at her, her purple hair flashing in the light of the living room.
“They needed fresh blood in here. I just haven’t been placed yet is what she’s saying. We’re just figuring it out still.” Zaria told him and Brent gave a smile. He knew what that felt like.
“Up on the back we have Jeff, who you met. Jeff is my right hand man and helps me with my day to day tasks. Then we have Xavier next to him. He’s in charge of the Guild’s PR when I’m not busy destroying it with my own hands.” Aunt Dina said with a smile. Xavier’s smile grew a little tense at the Captain’s admittance.
“I am glad that you are fully aware of how difficult you make my job.” He told her and she gave a childish grin.
“Why wouldn’t I? It’s not like I completely black out when I go into a rage. I just mostly black out.” She said cheerfully and Brent had no idea what to say to that. She was rather unhinged, despite her age. Xavier’s laugh held all the pain that Brent could see in Pamela’s eyes every time Kellen did something unhinged and on camera.
He felt for the guy.
“The last member is standing in the kitchen. That’s Nick, or Nicholas. He’s here in place of my Lieutenant in charge of our Guides because she is heavily pregnant and his wife and imprint. He wouldn’t let her be here, but I’m sure you’ll video call at some point so that she can greet you properly.” Aunt Dina said. Brent felt his eyes widen. He hadn’t been around that many pregnant Guides.
Partially because he was on the front lines and what kind of moron would let a pregnant woman be on the front lines, and two, the Guilds where he was mostly floating around were younger. Not many were thinking of settling down yet.
Nick was a rather silent guy. Had stood behind Brent as he had scarfed down his food without a word. Not a single complaint or otherwise. He was blond, blue eyed, and had a look in his eyes that told Brent that he was one step from the edge. Brent also didn’t think that was unusual for him.
“She’s okay?” Brent asked him, and Nick gave a nod.
“She’s just cranky that she couldn’t be here.” He told him and Brent nodded. He, like most Guides, were always worried for Guides that he heard about, but never saw. It was a reflex from how many Guides were still kept captive once they found a long term partner. Imprints were even more of a cautious thing to dance around.
Unless you were the Woods family, who never hid their partners, just made sure that anyone who fucked with them knew that they weren’t coming back from it alive.
“Then I’ll look forward to that video call.” Brent admitted, looking around at the group that Aunt Dina had assembled.
They seemed strong. They seemed capable. So…how had such a severe tragedy hurt them and their Captain? How was the E.A.G. allowed to run as wild as they did in the city? Why did it feel like they were alone in fighting against them?
