Chapter 148: What The Fuck?

Lying on his bed with his eyes shut tight, Damain enjoyed the brief moment of peace and clarity before three mild knocks rocked his door. The knob twisted and the door opened.

Damain’s eyes slowly fluttered open, and his heart shook at what he saw. A familiar face walked into the room, wearing black shades that did not fit his white jacket and yellow shirt. A small pendant hung loosely around his neck, and a happy smile seemed permanently etched onto his face.

The person approaching him with a name tag and a badge pinned to his chest was none other than Corbin, and behind him was also Linda in casual clothes.

“Mr. Hill, I am Detective Corbin Cog and this is my partner, Linda Luther.”

“I have seen you two once… I can’t remember where, but I’m certain of it.” Damain feigned surprise.

In this situation, Damian knew they came for more than just questioning him. They might actually be suspicious of him.

“Aah, yes, we once met on street traffic.” Linda laughed awkwardly to fill the silence.

Corbin chimed in with a firm nod. “Yeah, I remember you were heading out to meet a client’s mom or something.”

Damain watched these two toy with him, but he continued acting oblivious.

“Yeah… Yeah… I think that’s it.” He nodded.

The two seemed to let out a sigh simultaneously after hearing his response. Damain then watched Corbin walk over to the end of the room to grab a stool.

Clearly this man could see despite losing his eyes in that fight.

“It’s dark. So why is he wearing shades?” Damain asked Linda, who was standing by the corner of his bed.

He could see Corbin’s shoulder stiffen, but based on their calm expressions it was clear they had a solution prepared already.

“Occupational hazard. He got hurt in the line of duty. His eyes are recovering, so he’s keeping it hidden so he won’t scare the kids away.” Linda explained.

Her words were mixed with truth and lies, allowing her to carry a confidence that would make anyone believe her. If Damain had not been there himself, he would have agreed to this nonsense.

“I see.” He nodded sheepishly and watched Corbin place the seat next to his bed.

Once seated, he pulled out a pocket journal and a pen, but then he froze. While the glasses were blocking his eyes, Damian guessed he was looking at his hand from his head position.

They were interested in his ring.

“That ring of yours. This is the second time I’m seeing it. Can I get a closer look?”

The room fell silent as Damain’s eyes narrowed slightly. Meanwhile Corbin and Linda stared at him silently with strange looks in their eyes.

’I have no demonic force. If I take off the ring can they tell it’s me?’ He asked inwardly.

[Impossible. With the residual divine aura restricting your demonic heart from beating, you will appear like any other human to them.] The system gave a quick response and he inwardly nodded.

“Ooh, sure.” Damain smiled at them, startling Corbin and Linda.

They had expected excuses and resistance, yet this person was willingly cooperating.

They came back under Corbin’s demand. Apparently, even with the last test he was still suspicious of Damain, and Linda found this ridiculous. Unfortunately, Corbin was her direct superior, so she had no choice but to follow his orders.

They watched Damain take off the ring like it was nothing and pass it over to them.

“I did tell you that’s my wedding ring, so I can’t let you take it away.” He said with a smile.

Corbin blinked, confusion written all over his eyes hidden behind the black shade. Even now that Damain pulled out the ring, he could not feel a thing from this man.

’Was I really wrong?’ He was deeply shocked.

Corbin was someone whose intuition had never been wrong. Never.

This was the first time.

’No… I can’t be wrong!’

Corbin shot him a warm smile and responded. “Of course, I’m just going to take a quick look.”

While taking the ring he made sure to brush his fingertips against Damain’s palm, sending in a pulse of divine energy.

The pain was immediate.

It was like his insides had become uncomfortably hot as the divine energy flowed through his entire body for a second, returning to Corbin as he pulled his hand away.

During the entire process, he was looking Damain in the face, hoping for resistance from his suppressed demonic energy, but there was none. Neither did he show any facial discomfort from the divine aura flowing through him.

What he did not know was Damain was not a pure demon, so the pain would not be as intense as that of demons. And since his demonic heart was yet to produce any more demonic energy, the divine aura met no resistance.

Corbin was left tongue-tied and confused as he stared at the ring briefly with a blank expression before passing it back to Damain and commenting.

“It’s just as beautiful as I imagined…” Corbin’s words were sweet, but his voice sounded distant, as if he was lost in thought.

Until his last battle, he had never been defeated and his gut feeling had never been wrong. But with his defeat, everything seemed to have changed. Nothing felt right. It felt like a part of him had been stolen away.

’I was wrong again… I… I have really lost my touch…’ Corbin was mentally and emotionally devastated, but he tried to maintain a polite smile on the surface.

It seemed this man was actually just a successful, devilishly handsome lawyer with a unique art taste.

Maybe his deluded belief that Damain was the prince of hell was birthed from his own insecurity. Probably he was just jealous of this man because he was lacking in comparison.

Maybe that was why.
