Chapter 84: The Eye of God; Father Corbin

By the time Damian left the office, it was well past 3 p.m. He headed straight to a grocery store to pick up supplies, though not for himself. The groceries were for Mama Breezy.

Using the excuse of visiting her, Damian planned to take the longer route to her home. It was the road that passed directly through the location where demons had invaded the night before.

It had been a massive battle, one the world had completely failed to notice, but Damian knew it had happened. He needed to know the outcome. Had the church won, or had the demons?

What did the place look like now?

Damian had a thousand questions, and he strongly believed he would find his answers if he saw the place with his own eyes. When he finally arrived in the area, Damian made sure to move at a controlled speed. Not slow enough to draw attention, yet not fast enough to miss anything. It was the perfect pace for careful observation.

The buildings, the roads, and every visible sign of battle had vanished as if the conflict had never happened at all. The entire region looked peaceful and undisturbed. Yet Damian noticed something immediately.

There was far more police presence in the area than usual.

But it was not only the police.

Several people dressed in casual clothing moved through the streets, blending seamlessly with pedestrians and residents. To an ordinary observer they were just part of the crowd, but Damian sensed the difference immediately.

They carried the pungent odor of holiness.

Even among the uniformed police officers, a few of them possessed that same unmistakable aura.

The members of the Order of Moses had not yet left the area.

It did not take long before Damian’s car was signaled to stop. Through his side mirrors he watched two figures approach the vehicle. One was a man he did not recognize. The other was a woman he remembered clearly.

Unlike the previous night, when she had been dressed in the white and golden cassock that concealed most of her figure, she now wore a fitted police uniform. The fabric hugged every curve and contour of her body, shaping a silhouette that even professional models would envy.

“Why do the best of us give ourselves to the Lord? You should be on my bed, not out on the streets,” Damian muttered under his breath, his eyes roaming with quiet appreciation.

They reached the driver’s side window and knocked. Damian rolled it down, and the moment Linda saw him her eyes widened in shock.

“You are that handsome lawyer who won the murder case a few days ago,” Linda blurted out in astonishment. “Oh my God, you look even better in person than you do on TV.”

The male officer beside her leaned back slightly to get a better look at Damian. His cap and dark sunglasses made it impossible to see his full face clearly, but strands of dyed purple hair peeked out from beneath the cap. It was an unusual sight for someone wearing a police uniform.

“My God, he is!” the man exclaimed in surprise, leaving Damian momentarily stunned.

Damian had not expected his fame to reach this far. He had already prepared himself to provide identification or even undergo a search if necessary.

“Do you have family around here?” Linda asked with dreamy eyes.

Damian shook his head.

“I’m just delivering some groceries to the woman who testified against her son during my trial. She’s all alone now, so I’m doing what I can to help fill the gap her son left behind.” He gestured toward the bag of groceries resting on the passenger seat.

Linda was visibly moved by those words. To think that this incredibly handsome man was also compassionate and kind, not to mention a brilliant lawyer.

“Ooh, it seems my partner has a crush on you. Are you taken?” the man teased.

Linda’s face instantly turned red with embarrassment.

She slapped his shoulder playfully while shouting his name. “Corbin stop that.”

Even as she protested, her eyes remained hopeful as she looked at Damian, silently waiting for his answer.

“I’m sorry, I’m married and I’m crazy in love with my wife.” Damian lifted his hand slightly, allowing the wedding ring to catch the light.

Linda’s eyes flickered with disappointment, though she quickly forced a smile and tried to pretend the news had not affected her.

Corbin, however, had noticed something else entirely.

The ring on Damian’s finger was unusual. He had never seen anything quite like it before. The band had been carved into the shape of a fox and embedded with rare and expensive gemstones. While Corbin could not sense any divine or demonic energy from it, his instincts whispered that the ring was far from ordinary.

“That’s a unique ring you have there. It must have cost you a fortune,” Corbin said, his voice carrying a subtle edge.

“Ooh this? Not really. My wife actually proposed to me with it. She comes from old money and loves collecting antiques and unique items. I suppose it would be worth quite a lot if I ever decided to sell it.” Damian shrugged casually as he answered truthfully, though he had already sensed the sharp curiosity in Corbin’s tone.

Unlike his love struck partner, this man seemed observant, meticulous, and naturally suspicious of anything unusual.

Corbin did not only listen to Damian’s words. He studied his voice, his eyes, and the subtle movements of his face. After a moment, he concluded that Damian was not lying.

He gave the ring one final glance.

If Damian had shown the slightest panic or discomfort when the question was asked, Corbin would have immediately assumed the ring possessed some hidden significance. But it seemed the owner himself had no idea of its possible uniqueness.

Linda smacked Corbin across the back and pulled him away from Damian’s window, glaring at him while scolding him under her breath.

“Don’t keep the good man waiting here for too long. He’s trying to take care of someone’s mother,” she snapped, convinced Corbin was once again overreacting to something trivial.

The man’s habit of becoming suspicious over every little irregularity had become second nature to him. Linda had long grown accustomed to it, but she had no intention of tolerating it in front of a man she had developed a sudden crush on.

“I’m sorry for holding you here so long. Please go ahead,” Linda said with an apologetic smile.

“Ooh it’s nothing.” Damian shrugged lightly, returning the friendly expression.

They exchanged a few more polite words before Damian handed them his card bearing the address of the Blacksheep firm in case they ever needed legal assistance. After that, he started the car and drove away.

The moment the vehicle moved down the street and out of their immediate view, Damian’s smile disappeared. In its place appeared a cold, thoughtful expression.

“That man… Corbin… he has a sharp eye. And his guardian angel is not a normal one like Linda’s Ïsö. It must be something stronger.”

Damian glanced through his mirror as the two officers continued chatting and laughing in the middle of the street. His gaze lingered on the young man, but no matter how carefully he looked, he could not see the angel standing beside him.

“I’ll avoid this area from now on. I must keep minimal contact with that man,” Damian concluded quietly.
