Chapter 71: Faceless

For Damian, the incident that had just occurred in the hallway was a gift far greater than his promotion to junior partner. With everything captured on CCTV, the firm would be on fire tomorrow.

Unfortunately, he could not dwell on that thought because he was carrying out one of his many plans right now.

Music blasted through the penthouse, the heavy bass vibrating through the marble floors and glass walls with every pounding beat. Purple lights flashed across the room in slow pulses while thick clouds of smoke drifted lazily through the air, blending the scent of expensive perfume, alcohol, and burnt weed into something heavy and intoxicating.

Twenty sat comfortably at the center of the large leather couch like a king holding court. Thick chains rested against his chest, and in one hand he held a bottle of expensive liquor while a blunt burned slowly between the fingers of the other.

“Tonight we celebrate!” he shouted over the music.

A few girls danced wildly on top of the glass tables, half dressed and a few barely dressed at all. One girl leaned over Twenty’s shoulder and pressed a drink into his hand while laughing loudly. Another sat beside him, carefully arranging white powder on a small mirror resting on the table in front of them.

Several lines had already been prepared.

Twenty glanced down at it and chuckled deeply.

“Man… they said I was finished.”

He lifted the glass and downed the entire drink in a single gulp. The crowd around him erupted into cheers.

“Finished?” he scoffed, leaning back against the couch. “Man, I just beat a murder case!”

Another girl shoved a blunt into his hand before the previous one had even burned halfway down. Twenty accepted it without hesitation, lighting it with practiced ease. Smoke curled upward into the already thick haze hanging over the room.

The music pounded harder.

A girl climbed onto his lap and wrapped her arms loosely around his neck.

“Baby, you’re twice as famous now,” she giggled.

Twenty grinned widely, his teeth flashing beneath the colorful lights.

“Always was.”

Bam!

Suddenly the lights went out. Darkness swallowed the room instantly, cutting the music off mid-beat and plunging everything into a heavy silence.

For a brief moment nobody moved. Only Twenty’s hand slowly reached for the gun strapped to his waist, but then the familiar violet fire burst into existence.

The flames erupted in the center of the room with a deep rushing sound, swirling upward in twisting waves of unnatural purple light.

Screams erupted immediately as the girls scattered in every direction, their heels clattering against the floor as they ran blindly toward the exits. Some knocked over tables while others shoved past each other in pure panic.

Twenty, on the other hand, let go of his weapon the moment he recognized the purple flames. However, he glanced nervously toward the exit, worry tightening his expression because of what the girls had seen.

“Don’t worry about them. My wife will make sure none of them remembers what they saw tonight.” Damian’s deepened voice rang from the violet fire geyser, calm and collected as always.

The flames vanished in an instant, plunging the room into darkness again. A second later the lights flickered back on just as he walked toward a couch and sat down without waiting for an invitation.

Twenty stood frozen in shock and awe. He needed a moment to collect himself in the presence of a man who had just performed something he could only describe as magic. If he were to tell anyone about this, they would never believe him.

Quickly he sprang to his feet, walked around the table, and offered the enigmatic man responsible for his success a hand for a handshake.

“What may I call you?”

In this man’s presence, Twenty remained respectful. Damian stared at the outstretched hand and frowned. He was trying to establish a relationship between a god and a mortal here, not between business partners.

It took him a moment to decide how to respond, but for Twenty that brief silence, barely two seconds, was already enough to make him uncomfortable as his hand remained hanging awkwardly in the air.

Then he watched Damian slowly reach for his mask.

Damian slowly lifted the mask, revealing half of his face.

It was bare.

No eyes. No eyebrows. No mouth. No nose.

Only a smooth slab of skin where the faint outlines of two faces seemed to press outward from beneath the flesh as if something inside his body was trying to break free.

Twenty screamed at the top of his lungs, falling onto his butt and hastily scrambling away while Damian calmly pulled the mask back over his face.

“My followers call me Faceless… As for what I am. To my allies I am a benevolent God and to my enemies I am a demon.”

As he spoke, Damian leaned forward slightly, purple light burning beneath the fox mask.

“So, Mr. Dwayne. What am I to you?”

Twenty’s face turned pale with fright as the meaning behind Faceless’s words struck him immediately.

“A God… God of course!” Twenty said hastily, forcing a strained smile onto his face.

Slowly Damian leaned back and gave a small nod of approval.

“Good. I knew you were an ally. My student never misreads people.”

Casually Damian stretched out his hand toward the table. Focusing on the rippling energy flowing from his demonic heart, he expelled his demonic force from his palm but kept it intact and held it firmly in place. Slowly but steadily, the thread of demonic force linked to his body drifted toward a glass cup resting on the table.

To Twenty, Faceless had simply stretched his hand toward the table. He could not see the demonic energy at all, but barely a second later the cup filled with whiskey began to tremble slightly before slowly lifting off the table.

It rose gently into the air and drifted forward before stopping perfectly in Faceless’s waiting hand.

Faceless then removed his mask, revealing Twenty’s dark face sitting unnaturally upon his light skinned body. He calmly took a sip of the whiskey before giving Twenty a smile that made his soul leap out of his body.

’This thing is not doing some magic trick… it is the real thing!’

Twenty stared at Faceless the way a man stared at a bear preparing to pounce on him.

Only terror remained on his face.
