Chapter 81: New High-Profile Case

Seated in his new office, Damian stared at his phone. On the screen was a message from Twenty, with a meeting time set for 5pm. After his conversation with Twenty the previous night, they had agreed to move forward with his plan and signed the Faustian bargain.

Twenty had also agreed to walk Damian through everything he needed to know about the gang. With that information, they could begin plotting against it properly. That alone meant his evening would already be busy.

As for his new subordinates, Damian spared them little thought. He neither cared enough nor had the time to bother with them. At the moment, he had far too many problems of his own to concern himself with other people.

“You seem distracted…”

Clara’s voice from the other side of the desk made him flinch slightly. Frowning, he rubbed his temple before leaning back into his chair.

“Yeah… I have a lot to do outside work and I’m also planning our vacation, so it’s a bit hectic.” Damian answered honestly, though he kept his explanation vague.

Thankfully, Clara was not the type to pry. She simply nodded and replied calmly.

“We really don’t have much to do here today, so why don’t you head back home and get some rest. I’ll handle everything here and give you a call if your presence is needed.”

Clara’s offer caught him by surprise, yet it aligned perfectly with what he had already intended to do. His plan had been simple. Settle into the new office, inform Martin about his vacation plans, then leave. He never intended to spend much time working today.

A smile spread across his face as he leaned over the desk and gently held her hand.

“Thank you.”

Clara’s cheeks flushed pink as she nodded with a sweet smile.

“Don’t forget our date this weekend. My girls are really looking forward to seeing you.” he said as he rose to his feet.

Clara blinked in confusion.

Damian had kids?

Unfortunately, she never got the chance to ask. Damian had already grabbed his suitcase and rushed out the door.

Without hesitation, he marched straight toward Martin’s office, fully prepared to inform the senior partner about his upcoming vacation.

However, the moment he opened the door, Damian instantly regretted it.

The smile on Martin’s face was the kind a person showed when they coincidentally met someone they had already planned to find later. If this senior partner had been looking for him, it was almost certainly work related.

“Aah! Mr. Hill, I was just about to come find you.” Martin rose from his seat with a calm smile, though urgency flickered within his eyes.

This was exactly what Damian had hoped to avoid.

“Hold on, before you say anything, I was just about to inform you of my plans to go on a vacation trip with my wife. And you know I deserve it after the victory I just delivered to your doorsteps.”

The old Damian would never have dared to speak so boldly. But this Damian was different. He was already something beyond the level of ordinary humans. If he had known this would happen, he might have simply left and returned after his vacation. Whether the firm chose to fire him or retain him no longer mattered. Within days, he would likely be worth hundreds of millions.

If their buyers proved generous, he might even find himself on the list of the world’s richest men.

He had absolutely no reason to put up with unnecessary pressure.

“I know, I know, but it’s a high profile political case I have been working on for the past six months, and the client personally requested that you be placed in charge of the case!”

Martin raised both hands in surrender as he revealed the information without hesitation.

Suddenly his vacation plans did not seem quite as important.

’It’s not like hearing him out will hurt.’ Damian lied to himself, quietly soothing his own guilty conscience.

“What politician is that?” he asked.

“Alderman Louie Delaney.”

Damian drew in a deep breath as he struggled to maintain a calm expression. Beneath the surface, however, his heart was pounding.

Councilman Delaney was a powerful member of the Chicago city council and held immense influence within the America’s Liberation Party.

No member of the Liberation Party could truly enter the political arena without Delaney’s blessing. That was how important he was.

If Damian managed to resolve this problem for the councilman, it could become his first real step into the political world.

He was not willing to abandon his vacation for this case, especially now that he knew buyers had already been secured.

“Because of your recent spectacular courtroom victory, you are currently the hottest defense lawyer in the city. Requesting your direct involvement is not cheap, so you will be receiving a sizable bonus as your own cut in your next pay.” Martin continued explaining. “Also, since I’m already on the case with my team, everything is already in place. All we need is for you to meet the client and build on what we have prepared. You are not starting from scratch, so you should still have time for your vacation. The only difference is you will have to work while on vacation.”

The old man spoke with direct honesty, leaving Damian with little reason to fault him.

If things truly were as simple as Martin described, then it was manageable. Clara was tagging along on the trip anyway. They could always work at night after spending their days enjoying themselves.

’This is an opportunity I cannot pass up. But I will have to tell my wives about these changes too.’

Letting out a quiet sigh, Damian nodded.

“Alright. I’ll go through the case file and then set up a meeting with the councilman later.”

The moment he finished speaking, Martin’s expression suddenly turned apologetic.

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

The old man was far too easy to read. His face betrayed everything he felt, and that was what made bad news even worse. Damian could already sense the problem before the words were even spoken.

“The councilman already set up a meeting today and you agreed to it… right?”

His question was met with silence. A brief, uncomfortable silence. Then Martin finally spoke.

“I’m sorry.”
