Chapter 121: 121
Even though both Michelle and Nyxaroth could usually see in the dark because they possessed the dark element, neither of them could see into the space behind the wall made of void obsidian. And both of them had a guess as to why that could have happened.
Michelle thought it happened because the space behind the wall was completely black, so they weren’t actually seeing darkness but just a black wall. On the other hand, Nyxaroth thought that either a dark element Spirit Master or a Shadow Master had altered the space behind the wall with a special skill, so even those who could normally see in the dark were rendered blind.
“Michelle, can you light a flame?” Nyxaroth asked, wanting to see if they could see through the skill with light, because that would mean that the one who altered the space was just a dark element Spirit Master. But if they still couldn’t see, it would mean that the Ostrich family had ties with a Shadow Master, which could be quite troublesome in the future.
Not seeing a reason not to, Michelle lit a blue flame in her hand, also wanting to see if her theory was right. If it were, the black walls should absorb all the light, not reflect anything back. But if she was able to light up the room, it would mean someone had used a different method to blind her gaze.
When Michelle lit the flame, she could see that the void obsidian wasn’t black, but actually an extremely dark shade of blue, but she still couldn’t see into the space behind the wall. Not even a speck of reflection. If her theory was right, the room was completely empty, with the walls a perfect shade of black, which didn’t reflect a speck of light. Well… The room didn’t necessarily have to be empty. Just everything had to be painted the same black.
Still, Michelle didn’t know if this shade of black was known to the people of the world, so she was open to the possibility of the blackness being caused by a special array or skill. In the end, she wasn’t in the world for even a year, while the person who created the space behind the wall had lived in the world since he was born, so for at least a few decades, if not centuries.
Seeing that Michelle’s fire didn’t light up the space, Nyxaroth sighed. “I’ll go in first… Keep the light lit…”
Michelle nodded and watched Nyxaroth step through the hole. To her surprise, the moment he stepped through, the darkness swallowed him, letting her understand that it had to be a skill that created the blackness, not just a color of the walls. If it were merely the color of the walls, she would have been able to see Nyxaroth, but he disappeared from her sight like he entered a space behind a black curtain.
“Nyx, can you hear me?” she raised her voice as she spoke.
“Yes!” Nyxaroth’s voice carried to her just fine, showing that the space didn’t isolate sound, luckily.
“Should I follow you?” Michelle asked.
Nyxaroth thought about it for a moment before answering. “Sure! Come here! And you don’t need to keep the fire lit, since it’s useless. Also, you probably won’t be able to find me in this darkness, so just explore it on your own.”
“Yes!” Michelle retracted the flame and stepped into the darkness, closing her eyes. Since her sight was useless, she wouldn’t let it obstruct her. She wasn’t used to being blind, so she kept her hands in front of her at first, but soon, she bumped into something with her leg, so she realized that it was useless to have her hands stretched out if she stumbled over something that was down on the ground, so she used her ice element to form a long stick, like the ones blind people used in her past life, and tried to use it to navigate around the room.
At first, she felt clumsy, but after a while, she got used to using the spirit energy in the ice stick to scan a small bit of her surroundings.
Just then, she suddenly felt like a complete fool as she let the ice stick melt back into her hand and squatted down, putting her hands on the ground. In an instant, she started creating a net of both her ice and dark element spirit energy and slowly spread it all around the room she was in.
Soon, she was able to locate Nyxaroth, and he also felt her, as he had some connection with her spirit energy because of the contract between himself and Michelle. He could also use the web of spirit energy to sense around the room, but it was a bit impractical for him.
Realizing that Michelle would be able to take care of herself if something happened, Nyxaroth turned into a speck of black dust and flew into Michelle’s body. “Call for me if you are in danger…” he said lazily, his raspy voice as creepy and bloodcurdling as ever. But Michelle was already used to it.
Also, she was determined not to call Nyxaroth if her life wasn’t in direct danger. She didn’t want to get used to relying on her strong contracted beasts, so she wouldn’t end up completely helpless and basically useless if a situation arose where she wouldn’t be able to rely on them.
With her eyes closed, Michelle remained in place, sensing around the room for something interesting, but at first, all she found was emptiness. But as she moved her consciousness further along the net, she found something. But she couldn’t really make out what it was, just that it had a cubic shape.
After slowly walking over, she placed her hands on the cold and smooth surface of the cubic something and traced its edges until she found a small, circular opening on the back of it.
Running her finger along its edge, she knew not to recklessly push her hand in and first stretched her net over the opening and sent it through the opening into the cubic object.
Quickly, she found something. Something like cage bars. Like the cubic thing was a shield over a cage.
With a slight frown, she pushed the net of spirit energy behind the bars and tried to sense what was in the cage, but she didn’t find anything alive. Just some remnants of foreign spirit energy, which definitely wasn’t there for a long time, as the specks of spirit energy were still in some order, whereas free spirit energy usually just ran rampant in space until it was absorbed by someone.
The fact that the spirit energy behind the bars was somehow in order meant that something was originally in the cage, but just a while ago, it got out. So Michelle wasn’t alone in the room.
In a situation like that, anyone would stand up and start sensing around the room, no longer paying attention to the cage in the cube, but Michelle remained motionless, keeping the net of her spirit energy inside the cage. She had the urge to stand up and look for the creature which was originally in the cage, but something in her gut was telling her that the cage was important. So she didn’t let go of it.
And she decided to do what she hadn’t wanted to do a while before because it seemed reckless. Slowly, she inserted her hand into the opening of the cube and grabbed onto the bars, pulling on them with all her strength. But the bars didn’t move a bit. So she coated her hand in her spirit energy and pulled again. Still nothing.
That annoyed her a bit. She was determined to break the bars, even though she didn’t have a real reason for it. Still she condensed a bit of her spirit energy around the bars and let it explode. The cubic box exploded, but the cage remained intact.
Putting both her hands on the cage, she tightly shut her eyes and decided to drop the thought of breaking the cage. It was clear she was too weak. Or she was using the wrong method.
She thought about putting the cage down, but after a while, she decided against it and tried to put the cage into her spatial ring. But she was surprised when her spatial ring didn’t let the cage in. There were only two cases when a spatial artifact wouldn’t let something in. The first was when the thing being put into it was a spatial artifact too, since those couldn’t be stuck into each other, and the other was when a spatial artifact couldn’t store living things but someone was trying to put something living into it.
With a frown, Michelle tried to probe with her wisp of consciousness into the cage, but she didn’t find any space in it, so it only left one possibility. In the cage was something alive which she couldn’t sense even with her net of spirit energy.
To confirm that thought, Michelle tried to put the cage into her spatial bracelet, which could store living things, and it went in without any trouble, showing that the cage did indeed contain a living creature. In an instant, Michelle pulled the cage out of the bracelet and put both her hands on its sides, forming a thick net of her spirit energy in it, searching for any signs of the creature, but she didn’t find anything.
