Chapter 161: 161
In the basement, Alexander watched with great interest how Michelle summoned a pillar of void in the corner and started moving it slowly.
When the pillar was a few meters away from the wall, she began reshaping it into a wall that stretched from one side of the basement to the other but didn’t touch the walls on the sides.
That made it so air could move from one side of the wall to the other by going through these gaps.
The wall of void she made was parallel with the wall with the entrance and the wall opposite it.
Michelle could already feel some wind pick up in the basement and go towards the void, but that wasn’t enough. She needed more.
So she slowly, very slowly, started moving the wall from the wall at the end of the basement towards the wall with the entrance.
As the wall moved, air rushed at it from all sides and moved around it, sticking to it. And the air that got the closest was the most humid air because it was the densest. It could push through the rest of the air to get to the wall.
With the wall moving, Michelle had to retreat to the basement entrance. It wasn’t that she couldn’t touch the void or something like that. If she wanted to, she could easily pass through the wall to get to the other side, but then the wall would block her vision, and she wouldn’t be able to see if it had already reached the wall with the entrance.
Unlike Michelle, Alexander didn’t retreat. He stayed in place, letting the wall go over him. For a short while, he found himself surrounded by nothingness. The same nothingness as the one he had fallen into when his rift through space had fallen apart and he fell into void.
But before he could observe the void any more, the wall moved further, leaving him standing behind it, alone in his own thoughts.
And even though it didn’t show on his face, he was shocked. In theory, he knew that having completely black soul power meant having void within one’s own soul, but it was still hard to believe.
Also, even in ancient scrolls, there were only theories about that—all stated that it was void-like or void-similar soul energy. That it was nearly identical, with most of its properties.
But Alexander had once fallen into void. He could tell that Michelle’s soul energy wasn’t nearly identical. It was identical.
The feeling of being pulled apart when something was actually trying to enter his body was too vivid for the wall to be just something similar.
There was just one difference. The soul energy didn’t enter his body and soul. So he wasn’t infected with Void Plague again.
But that wasn’t because the soul energy wasn’t void. The soul energy was void. It was because the void was under Michelle’s control, and she made sure it wouldn’t enter Alexander again.
She was a practical person, so she didn’t want to lose any of her void, as that could, though barely, affect the process of getting rid of the humidity. Also, she didn’t feel like pulling the void out of Alexander again.
So, under Michelle’s control, the wall of void nearly reached the wall with the entrance, so Michelle started reshaping the void again. But she made sure the amount present remained the same.
After reshaping, the thin wall was turned into a big cube which could barely fit through the entrance without touching any of the walls.
Michelle started walking upstairs, pulling the cube along. But she realized that the void wasn’t enough to pull all the humid air out. And she didn’t want to repeat the whole process again, so she summoned more void and added one more cube in front of the first cube, sticking them together. So she had a cuboid with a rectangular base.
With double the amount of void, more air stuck to the cuboid, taking along most of the humidity. Of course, some humidity remained because the air was naturally a bit humid, but it was just perfect for humans to breathe.
After a while, Michelle finally reached the tavern’s ground floor and sighed in relief. Though it wasn’t exactly difficult, it was quite taxing to control the void while the surrounding air hit and crashed against it.
In front of the window, she reshaped the void into a long, sleek cuboid so it could fit through the window. Then she pushed it through, feeling humid wind pass by her, following the void.
Once she no longer felt the wind, she absorbed the void back into her body and shut the window to prevent the humid air from returning into the tavern.
When Michelle shut the window, she frowned a bit. Since the moment she had absorbed the last speck of her soul energy, or void, she felt something stir within her soul. But she couldn’t put her finger on it. She felt like she felt something. But she couldn’t even be sure of that.
It was still there, but it was so subtle she felt like she was imagining things. Something like that had never happened to her before.
Placing her hand on the glass in front of her, Michelle watched her reflection in the window, concentrating on the feeling in her soul. Though it was nearly unnoticeable, as she concentrated on it, she got more sensitive to it, and after a while, she could discern it quite easily. But she still couldn’t make out what it was.
“What’s with the long face?” Alexander’s melodic voice sounded in Michelle’s ears as he came out of the basement. That was the first time he had seen Michelle like that.
“Can soul energy change shapes within one’s body?” Michelle asked with a slight frown. That was the best way she could explain what she was feeling, but it was still far off from what she was really feeling.
“I’ve never heard of such a case,” Alexander shook his head, his smile still present but slightly smaller. He was clearly thinking about what Michelle said. “Is it really changing shapes?” he asked with a curious smile after a while.
Michelle frowned a bit. “I don’t know…” she shook her head. “That’s the best way to describe it. I can barely feel it.”
Alexander stared at Michelle as she kept looking at her reflection in the window. She thought about asking Nyxaroth to check her soul since he resided within her body and thus could do so, but she didn’t want to rely on him too much.
Also, Nyxaroth didn’t have soul energy, so there was no telling whether he could understand or at least see what was going on.
So the best thing to do was to focus on the feeling until it was possible to comprehend it. And to better concentrate, Michelle closed her eyes lightly, letting her mind naturally wander.
Seeing that Michelle wasn’t going to pay any more attention to him, Alexander walked to the top floor of the tavern, and after telling the old tavern lady that the dangers of void were gone, he went into a random room. There, a man dressed in black was already waiting.
The moment he saw Alexander, he knelt respectfully, keeping his gaze on the ground. “My Lord, you should return to the heavenly realm,” he said, some reverence and also fear clear in his voice.
“The foggies are getting antsy?” Alexander’s playful smile disappeared and the temperature in the room dropped rapidly. He wanted to stay a bit longer, but it seemed that a group of people didn’t know their places.
“My Lord, should I get rid of them?” the man in black asked, his voice laced with hatred. Those who dared to anger his master were fated to die a gruesome death.
“No…” Alexander shook his head. “That would take up too much time,” he added, his eyes pools of ice. He couldn’t deny that he wanted these annoying old bastards dead, but doing so would make him stay in that stifling place for too long. He had always hated the place, and at the moment, when there was something drawing him outside, the thought of staying there was even more repulsive.
“What are you planning, My Lord?” the man in black was clearly puzzled by Alexander’s words. The whole time he had followed Alexander as his master, he had not seen him hesitate to kill. So what was it that made him restrain his killing intent? Something like “too much time” wasn’t something that could stop his master from going on a killing spree. There had to be a reason why he had so little time to spare.
Alexander’s face remained cold as he summoned his energy and used it to force a space rift open. “For now, I’ll give them a warning. A month should be enough time for them to understand who to not mess with.”
At Alexander’s words, the man in black wanted to follow, but Alexander glanced at him momentarily, freezing him in place. “Make sure to protect her!” he said coldly, leaving no room for arguments.
The man in black didn’t need anyone to tell him who he was supposed to protect. He had already been following his master for a while, so he had seen the approximately sixteen or seventeen-year-old girl. He wasn’t really impressed by what she had done, but he knew that he would be. Anyone with enough experience would be able to see that the young girl had not shown her full potential.
