Michelle shook her head. “Why would you think so, My Lady?” she asked.

“You weren’t paying attention,” the singer kept smiling as she spoke. “Am I not beautiful enough?” She stopped for a moment before opening her mouth again. “Or are you just not interested in women?”

That made Michelle cough a bit. Was she being mistaken as gay?

But the singer then said something even more surprising. “You know, Boss already had some suspicions about your identity, but we didn’t think it would be true,” she spoke with a smile which didn’t show a bit of hostility. A smile which couldn’t be faked.

Hearing that, Michelle froze up for a moment. So it seemed the Boss was someone she knew. And someone she had a positive relationship with. Also, someone smart. Only two people like that came to her mind in the lower realm: the old tavern lady and the boss lady of the information guild.

Then, there was one more thing to consider—Michelle’s identity. The tavern lady knew that Michelle was a girl disguised as a boy. But the boss lady didn’t know. Which meant she had a much higher chance of guessing something about Michelle’s identity.

“What gave me away?” Michelle asked as she took off her disguise mask. Whoever the singer was under, they had to know she was a girl. So there was no point in keeping up the pretenses. “I doubt it’s because I didn’t pay attention to your singing.”

“Naturally, that wasn’t it.” The singer’s smile widened when she saw Michelle’s young but already stunning face. Just a year or two and the face would be able to ruin realms. “It was back in the guild and in the Golden House.”

Michelle was suddenly a bit confused for a moment. The guild the singer spoke about must have been the information guild. But what was the Golden House?

The singer laughed a bit before picking up an envelope from the table by her side. “Anyway, I didn’t invite you to chitchat. Boss wanted this to be passed to you.” She handed the envelope to Michelle and waited for her to open it. All the while, she was smiling.

Michelle picked up the envelope and cracked the seal. Pulling out a folded paper, she opened it and started reading. Slowly, her smile widened.

“This is one pleasant surprise after the other,” she commented.

The letter read as follows:

“Young Michelle, I hope you’ve been doing well since leaving this place.”

“I know it’s rude, but after you left, I sent someone to investigate you and found out that your abilities reach far beyond what I could have imagined.”

“I was told you are originally from the Land of Exile, but to keep up at least some form of respect, I didn’t send anyone there. Please forgive my rudeness. I had to investigate you to make sure you weren’t someone plotting against my people.”

“Now I would like to raise an offer. Within the lower realm, my information guild stretches its wings everywhere, and we could become both your sword and shield. In exchange, I just ask you to take a few of the talented girls with you when you go to the upper realms.”

“I have many talents in the guild who would get wasted by staying here. Please, grant me this wish. They will be of great help to you in the future.”

The singer wasn’t fully informed about what was in the letter, but she had a rough outline in her mind. So she was very pleasantly surprised when Michelle accepted.

“I shall let her know!” she said as she rang the ring on the table.

The next moment, Michelle heard footsteps approaching the backstage, so she put her disguise mask back on. And the next thing she knew, the same lady that had led her there entered.

“Yes?” she asked with a tilt of her head. It was clear from her way of dressing and the tasks she was given that she was of lower rank than the singer, but they spoke like long-time friends and buddies.

“Michael, do you want to leave now, or will you stay for some more information?” the singer asked. Seeing that Michelle was back in her disguise, she changed her way of addressing her.

Michelle shrugged a bit. “I don’t really know. Can I gain some useful information here?” she asked.

“Well, first off, we can give you information, or you can just listen in to the conversations of the guests. You will get to know quite some gossip, or even get to hear the making of great deals.”

The beautiful lady was shocked when she saw the singer speaking so calmly with Michelle, explaining everything to her.

After some time of listening to the singer, Michelle decided. She asked both for information and for the opportunity to stay behind and gather information on her own.

So the singer got the beautiful lady to lead her into a passage that passed between the private rooms of the brothel. The passage had thin walls, so she could clearly hear all conversations and sounds from the rooms.
