Chapter 308: 308
The Frostbound Leviathan was a strange creature. It looked like a big white wolf, with thick fur, heavy paws, and ice-blue eyes. And on its forehead, amongst the white fur, it had a single white stone, the ice element Life Stone.
But that was just the surface of the monster. The reason why it was even called a leviathan in the first place was because of a twist not many were aware of.
The wolf was not the real form of the monster. It could not shapeshift. Nor was it using any illusions or something like that.
In reality, it actually had no physical body. The wolf body was just an anchor. It was condensed from the monster’s power.
The only thing truly being the monster was the Life Stone. Striking it was the only way to kill the monster.
One could never see the real extent of the leviathan, but there could be glimpses to catch if the monster got angry.
The shadow of the “wolf” would stretch and change shape to resemble an ancient leviathan. Its paws would grow bigger and its tail thicker. And the gem on its forehead would swirl with something within it.
If, in that moment, someone looked closer, they would see that the thing in the gem was actually a small, serpent-like creature.
That was the leviathan’s real body.
All leviathans similar to the Frostbound Leviathan were born as beasts. They were weak and could not really do anything. But when they were born, it was always near the corpse of a monster, and the baby would use that to gain its power.
The baby leviathan would crawl into the corpse’s dying Life Stone and suck all power from it. And that power was not only the spirit energy remaining within the corpse after the monster’s death.
Whenever a creature died, its life essence would remain in its body for a while. The baby leviathan could absorb it and turn it into its own spirit energy.
Just a bit of life essence transformed into spirit energy would be enough to bring a monster’s rank to the Divine rank. So the life essence of a whole monster would definitely be enough to bring them up to the Paragon rank.
But those ranks fell under the restrictions of the Heavenly Law. So the one Michelle killed was only within the Divine rank, since it was in the lower realm.
After absorbing a dead monster’s spirit energy and life essence, the baby leviathan would grow within the Life Stone and gain the power to use spirit energy to condense a body to move the Life Stone around. Because the Life Stone would become its only physical body.
When one looked at it from that point, the Frostbound Leviathan was a beast, but considering the fact that by killing it one could obtain a Life Stone, people took it as a monster.
But there was one thing Michelle found strange about the Frostbound Leviathan she had killed.
Frostbound Leviathans were extremely intelligent and calm creatures.
So why was the one she killed so aggressive? It completely defied what she found out from Rivenaar’s memories.
There were a few explanations Michelle could think of. One, that the Sloan family had done something to the Frostbound Leviathan, which made it lose its mind. Second, it could have been severely hurt, or just locked away for far too long, causing it to lose its sanity. And third, it was born with some kind of defect which affected its thinking and temperament, making it more explosive and perhaps even a bit dumb.
But Michelle did not have the time to think about it too much. She was wrapped in a small blizzard, wondering what ability she would gain from absorbing the Life Stone.
She could absorb an ability of the Frostbound Leviathan, since it had been inhabiting the Life Stone for years, but it could also be an ability of the original monster. And Michelle had no clue what kind of monster that had been.
For a while, Michelle waited until the blizzard settled around her. Then she summoned her spirit energy and spread it out around herself. She formed it into something similar to her Sensing Net so she could feel the reaction of the Heavenly Law better.
With that, she stepped deeper into the barrier of the Heavenly Law.
The last few times, it had struck her so hard she ended up curled on the ground, a few meters away from the barrier. She was very much expecting something similar, but was also hoping for a difference.
Well, the difference was certainly there.
It was like the barrier did not exist. Michelle could not sense it with her Sensing Net, nor with physical touch.
Michelle raised a brow. “Is it ignoring me?” she frowned, feeling a bit offended. She had considered it as one of the possibilities before, but not very seriously.
It was an interesting change, not being noticed by the Heavenly Law, the law controlling the entire world, but it was also a boring change. It had been much more interesting when the Heavenly Law was directly retaliating against her.
Naturally, Michelle knew that if the Heavenly Law took an antagonistic stance against her, she would be as good as dead. She knew she should be thankful that the Life Stone she absorbed did not cause such a twist. But something within her was unhappy.
Somehow, she wanted a chance to retaliate against the Heavenly Law. But if it regarded her as completely nonexistent, how could she ever do it? It would be impossible.
That left a bitter aftertaste in her mouth.
Walking back through the barrier into the upper realm, Michelle sat down on the ground. She did not even feel like checking what abilities she had gained. She was deeply disappointed.
Seeing Michelle like that, Tenether, who had been lazily resting nearby in his kitty form, jumped onto her lap and rubbed his head against her arm.
Michelle subconsciously lifted her hand to pet the small black cat. In response, Tenether let out a soft, satisfied purr without any special meaning.
With Tenether in her arms, Michelle laid back on the ground, staring into the sky above her. She had not done that in a long time.
Michelle remained motionless for a long time until she heard a rustle from behind the barrier of the Heavenly Law. Sitting up, she saw a group of people preparing to cross from the middle realm to the upper realm, wondering if there would be any trouble.
Most of them were already of the Monarch rank, but a young girl, looking about eight years old, was still only at the early Divine rank.
The group had an artifact they could use to help her cross the barrier, but they were worried it would have side effects on her.
But they had no choice. They had to bring her to the other side. Her parents and her entire family were waiting for her in the upper realm.
Listening to the conversation, Michelle raised a brow.
A few days after the girl had been born, enemies of her family had hired someone to kidnap her. She was then brought to the lower realm and abandoned in an orphanage.
After years, the family finally tracked the kidnappers down and found the girl.
Being born in the upper realm, the little girl had already been at the threshold of the Divine rank at birth. Babies born in the upper realm were born at different cultivation ranks depending on their cultivation talents and how the mothers took care of themselves during pregnancy.
The little girl was lucky enough to be born at the Divine rank, so the family had no trouble bringing her up to the middle realm after finding her. But to bring her back to the upper realm, they had to use the artifact. To trick the Heavenly Law.
While listening to the people talk, Michelle found herself wondering about one thing.
Why did no one notice her?
She was on the other side of the barrier, so it was understandable that she might be harder to notice if she concealed herself, but she was literally standing right next to the barrier.
Staring down at the spot where the barrier was, a thought welled up in Michelle’s mind. Was the fact that the Heavenly Law was ignoring her also affecting how others perceived her?
To test it, Michelle stood up and walked closer to the barrier.
No one noticed her.
Not even Tenether in her arms.
To test things further, Michelle bent down and placed Tenether on the ground. The moment she let go of him and stepped back, the little girl on the other side of the barrier noticed him.
“Brother!” she grabbed a young man by his sleeve, pointing through the barrier. “A kitty! A cute kitty is there!” she shouted happily.
Seeing the small black cat, the young man narrowed his eyes. It looked harmless, but he doubted a harmless little creature could survive alone in a deep valley.
Michelle was standing right behind Tenether. So how was it that no one was seeing her?
Frowning a bit, she nudged Tenether with her foot. “Go to the other side,” she said, not bothering to conceal her voice. She wanted to see whether the people could hear her.
Meowing softly, Tenether stepped through the barrier. There, it walked up to the little girl and rubbed itself against her leg.
The little girl squealed in happiness and squatted down to pet the cat.
Her brother, standing beside her, was frowning deeply. For the cat to be able to pass through the barrier of the Heavenly Law without it reacting at all, it had to be powerful.
