Chapter 349: 349
Michelle stayed in the space for quite some time.
The creature was merciless and managed to kill her quite a few times.
But Michelle was slowly adapting to moving across the web, so the window between the kills was getting bigger every time.
Also, over time, Michelle was straightening her posture to look human.
Michelle didn’t know how much time had passed, but when she landed her first hit at the monster, she knew the time she would return to the normal world was approaching.
After that one hit, the creature managed to kill her again only once and it was barely.
Finally, Michelle felt something shift in the space around her when she got to the point when she and the creature were on equal footing when fighting.
And that was even though the creature had two more limbs than Michelle.
Michelle wanted to end her fight with the creature, but it just stopped moving.
Instantly.
Like it had turned into a stone.
Staring at it, Michelle understood that was the space telling her it was time to leave.
So she looked around, searching for something like an exit.
And she saw something familiar.
The black cocoon she had first stepped out of was back where it had disappeared, opened so Michelle could enter.
Taking a last look at the creature and the cavern, Michelle wondered what would happen if she dragged the creature along with her into the cocoon.
Michelle knew it was risky, the creature was a maiming and killing machine, but Michelle still wanted to do it.
And once she decided on something, absolutely nothing and no one could change her mind.
So, she wrapped her arms around the creature’s torso and tugged on it so it would fall to her.
Then, supporting the creature with her weight, she dragged it across the web with her to the cocoon.
Stopping right in front of the cocoon, she pushed the creature in first before stepping in herself.
And, to her surprise, nothing special happened.
Like when she came to the space and the cocoon opened, this time it closed, letting pitch black swallow everything.
Quickly, Michelle turned her gaze to the creature, watching it closely.
At first, everything was going fine.
That was until the moment that the black cube flew through the cocoon wall and into Michelle’s hands.
That in itself seemed fine until Michelle realized that it was pulling in shadow essence, soul and spirit energy from all around.
And that’s when Michelle understood how the creature was made.
It was just energy forced together to create a moving machine that highly resembled something alive.
It was similar to how the Living Shadow skill worked.
The energy the creature was made of started getting pulled into the cube, and Michelle could just watch it happen.
She didn’t know of a way to stop it.
After a while, Michelle was standing alone in the cocoon, the cube in her hand.
And a moment later, the cocoon disappeared.
Michelle was prepared to close her eyes because of the light that would come, but instead, she felt a hand over her eyes.
Without even sensing around, Michelle could feel intense shadow essence pulsing through it and all around.
Alexander was either angry or planning to destroy something.
Or both.
Still, Michelle couldn’t yet react.
The cube in her hands was forcefully pushing shadow essence and soul and spirit energy into her body.
It was returning what it had drained from her before pulling her into its space.
Thinking about it, Michelle remembered that in the space, she couldn’t use any of her energies.
That was probably because the space itself was constructed from her energies and her body was deprived of them.
It was actually quite funny, because it meant Michelle was fighting her own energies.
While getting her energies back, Michelle spoke to Alexander.
“How long was I in there?” she asked.
Alexander shrugged as he parted his fingers a bit, letting some light into Michelle’s eyes so she could slowly get used to it.
“I didn’t keep track of time.”
Michelle’s eyes narrowed sharply at the light, but since it wasn’t all that much, she got quickly used to it.
“Was it just hours or days?” she at least wanted to know that.
“Something over a day,” Alexander could at least be sure about that.
As he said that, Alexander removed his hand from Michelle’s face since her eyes were already mostly used to the light.
A moment later, Michelle felt the pushing of energies into her body stop.
It had all been returned to her.
It was quite surprising considering how long it took her to send it all into the cube before she was pulled into the space.
Getting it back was extremely fast.
Having her energies back, Michelle let go of the cube and let it fall to the ground, not really caring about it.
Then, she finally looked around where she was.
And it caused a twitch of her brow as she turned her head to Alexander.
“What’s this place?”
Alexander shrugged.
“Outside the academy.” He himself clearly didn’t even know where they were.
He probably just randomly flew there for the sole purpose of making Michelle leave the academy.
“Why are we here?” Michelle asked, though she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear the answer.
Especially since she clearly remembered how Alexander was acting before she entered the cube’s space; whining and being annoying on purpose.
Unlike Michelle, Alexander had already nearly forgotten about how he had been acting.
While Michelle was in the cube’s space, his full attention was on the Shadow Pact, so he completely forgot about everything else.
“What do you think?” Alexander showed a casual smile.
Michelle’s eyes narrowed.
She knew Alexander was planning something.
“What… do you want?” she tilted her head, watching Alexander’s expression closely.
Alexander wrapped his hands around Michelle and pulled her against him. “What was in that space?”
Michelle moved her hands to Alexander’s neck.
“Why do you want to know?” she was very much tempted to bite him.
Alexander chuckled, his throat moving under Michelle’s hands.
“Why did the Shadow Pact disappear for a moment? And repeatedly?” he looked carefree when he asked that, but knowing him well enough, Michelle could notice that he was serious about that question.
He seriously wanted to know what was in that space.
If it could interrupt the Shadow Pact, he would shatter the cube without a second thought.
Hearing that, Michelle froze for a moment.
She didn’t realize the Shadow Pact broke, most probably when the creature struck her down.
Truthfully, she didn’t even know whether she really died in those moments and got revived, or if the space healed her just before she died.
But considering that the Shadow Pact broke, she must have died.
Seeing Michelle lost in thought, Alexander tightened his grip around her, bringing her attention back.
“What happened there to make you think so hard about it?” he asked with a chuckle.
Michelle snapped out of her thoughts and momentarily tightened her grip on Alexander’s neck.
“It was a funny space…” she finally said, the sentence more of a hum than words.
“Funny?” Alexander didn’t believe that one bit.
He knew well enough that Michelle was mostly lying when she spoke in hums.
Michelle nodded.
“Quite funny actually,” she smiled lazily. “The ground was like a spiderweb to balance on, and I had to fight a strange creature.”
Alexander lifted a brow.
Releasing Michelle, he stepped back and walked around her, watching her posture closely.
“Your posture has changed.”
“That’s from having to balance on the web,” Michelle nodded.
That made sense, so Alexander didn’t ask much more.
He knew that Michelle didn’t tell him everything.
Since he had seen her for the first time, he understood that she existentially hated having to explain things.
So, as long as there was something that would make people ask her to explain, she wouldn’t say the thing in the first place.
So, instead of asking anything further, Alexander turned his attention to the cube discarded on the ground, lying lonely and forgotten.
Alexander didn’t like it the least bit.
Summoning his shadow essence, he pulled the cube into his hand, staring down at it.
Michelle stared at Alexander.
“Why the hate? It’s just a body-tempering object?”
Alexander looked over at Michelle.
At the same time, he tightened his grip on the cube and it broke into pieces.
“What was that for?” Michelle didn’t expect that.
She could see that Alexander clearly had something against the cube, but she didn’t think he would just destroy it.
“It has disgusting energy,” Alexander didn’t even bother to cook up a believable lie and just showed his usual smile.
Hearing that lie, Michelle let out a single laugh.
“You are aware that I will now have to deal with the questioning about why it’s broken, right?”
Alexander’s eyes gleamed.
“You can just not return to that place!” He had never concealed the fact that he didn’t want Michelle to pretend to be Ana Ostrich, but Michelle was a bit surprised that he didn’t even want her to be in the Ostrich Academy.
Alexander’s behavior was escalating.
It had changed while Michelle was in the cube’s space.
Why was that?
