Chapter 254: 254
For a while, Michelle stared at the windows about herself.
They were quite detailed. There was even a mention that her soul didn’t perfectly fit her body.
But not a single letter about her past life.
That showed that the Eye of Nihil wasn’t omnipotent. It couldn’t see everything, so relying on it too much could cause Michelle to overlook things.
A good thing to know.
But there was one thing she could definitely use it for: checking whether a person’s power was higher than hers or not.
Because if it was higher, even if they portrayed themselves as weaker, she wouldn’t be able to scan them.
“I see you are cooking up some nasty plan.” Alexander didn’t enjoy being ignored so much. So, under his command, the shadow essence keeping the mirror upright turned violent, breaking the mirror into a million pieces. “Why don’t you tell me about it?”
Michelle turned to Alexander. “Eye of Nihil can’t scan those stronger than its contractor. In other words, I can use it to see who’s stronger than me.”
“What if someone has an artifact or skill that counters it?” Alexander sat down on the bed and pulled Michelle onto his lap.
“I don’t plan on relying on it all the time. Quite the opposite.” Michelle knew she couldn’t really fight back against Alexander even if she was in her peak condition, so she didn’t even bother to get angry.
She just continued her explanation: “It’s obvious there will be a counter, or maybe even a better artifact somewhere. The Eye of Nihil is from the lower realm. Though there it was a legendary artifact, I doubt it’s that rare in the middle realm. And in the upper and heavenly realm, it’s probably like every other random stone on the road.”
Alexander shook his head. “Upgrading artifacts are available solely in the lower realm. In the higher realms, there are only those that remained after someone from the lower realm came up and died. The higher you go, the more scarce they are.”
That made Michelle raise a brow. “Then why don’t those from the higher realms go into the lower realm for them?”
“The Heavenly Law prevents it…” Alexander rested his chin on Michelle’s head, tightly wrapping his hands around her waist.
Michelle frowned. “Even if the Heavenly Law suppresses them, they should still be more powerful than most people in the lower realm. They barely ever break into the Divine rank.”
Alexander shook his head again. “The Heavenly Law isn’t only capable of suppressing people. It can prevent those who are suppressed by it from taking things through the barrier of Heavenly Law. In other words, once you break into the Monarch rank, you can no longer take artifacts you didn’t contract between realms.”
But Michelle still had a frown on her face. “But it would still be possible for those from the higher realms to force people in the Divine rank to go to the lower realm and get them artifacts.”
“That can only be done if you want the artifact to be brought into the middle realm. Those of Divine rank can’t go to the upper or heavenly realm.” Alexander smiled a bit. “But, it does happen. Middle realm’s people have many stations in the lower realm to get artifacts. They basically have a monopoly over them.”
Michelle’s frown eased a bit. It finally made some sense.
But it also spelled trouble for her and her friends. Having contracted artifacts, if people found out, they would become instant targets of assassinations—just so people could get their hands on the artifacts.
Michelle thought about it for a moment, then realized another thing that didn’t make sense. “Why don’t people from the higher realms come down to make a contract with the artifacts? That way, they could bring them through the barrier.”
The answer Alexander gave was simple: “You can’t make any contract if your powers are suppressed in any way. Of course, there are a few exceptions, but not many.”
After understanding the situation about artifacts, Michelle glanced out the window. The sun was setting on the horizon.
“How long will you stay here?” she suddenly asked.
Alexander snickered. “Are you kicking me out after using me?”
Michelle didn’t even look at his face. “Yes!” she gave a slight nod. After resting for a while, she could at least move her neck ever so slightly.
Alexander nearly laughed out loud. But instead, he laid down on the bed, pulling Michelle down along with him so her back would be pressed up against him. “What a pity that you are too weak to get rid of me.”
Michelle’s eyes flashed with murderous intent. She could tolerate many things, but when she wanted to rest, she hated being disturbed.
Like a pair of black wings, soul energy came out of her back and stabbed into Alexander. It didn’t cause bleeding—it just sunk deep into his body.
“Void Plague, again?” Alexander raised a brow. He could feel void starting to stir within him again.
“I didn’t weaken it this time,” Michelle hissed.
Alexander ended up laughing. “Then I’ll stay close to you so you can easily cure me.”
Seeing there was no way to get rid of Alexander, Michelle decided to go sleep. The rest was much needed if she wanted to recover.
One thing good about having been an assassin was that sleep was a tactical action.
When needed, Michelle could fall asleep on the spot, even standing upright. But once something disturbed her, she would wake up with her vigilance at its peak.
Seeing Michelle fall asleep within a matter of seconds, Alexander turned her around. Most of the time, Michelle had her disguise mask on, but she didn’t at the moment. He could see that beautiful face clearly.
And with Michelle asleep, her face was peaceful, making her look harmless.
But only a fool would think she was really harmless. And only a suicidal maniac would try to harm her in her sleep.
The wave of killing intent Alexander felt when he pulled Michelle down showed that though she was weak compared to him, if she got enraged, he wouldn’t escape unscathed.
And it wasn’t about being infected with Void Plague. If he wanted to, he could have dodged that.
It was about something else. But Alexander couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
There were a few times when he had angered Michelle so much that he was washed over by her killing intent. But she had never really wanted to kill him. If there came a moment like that, there was no way he would escape unharmed.
Alexander didn’t want to end up in a situation like that. But he wanted to see Michelle in such a state. He wanted to see how different she would act when completely enraged, determined to completely destroy someone.
“It would be beautiful, wouldn’t it…”
He put his head down on the pillow, looking at Michelle’s face in front of him.
Even with how pale it was, it was breathtaking, and Alexander found himself staring at it for a long time.
Outside the room, Unlucien and Noctis were sitting on a tree. They couldn’t see into the room because Alexander had closed all the windows. But they didn’t even want to.
They were fairly certain their Lord went nuts just from hearing the conversation he had with Michelle.
The Dark Lord they knew wasn’t the type of person to explain things to others. And definitely wasn’t the type of person who would let someone weaker than him infect him with something he didn’t know how to get rid of.
But they didn’t dare say anything.
Even if he had gone crazy, Alexander Terce was still the Dark Lord—their master and lord. No matter what happened, they would obey him with respect they wouldn’t show to Mavreth or Lavreth, the two gods of the heavenly realm.
Darkness covered the sect and the moon rose in the starless night sky.
And just like the sky was empty, emptiness filled the area around the sect. Even the wind stopped howling. Like something was coming.
Mavreth was awake in his office, staring out the window at the sky. He had a frown on his face. He didn’t like nights like those.
Sometimes, they meant something, but most of the time, they were just a natural phenomenon. And there was no way to distinguish between the two.
So he was wondering. Would he have to work at night again, or was he allowed to continue brewing poisons for his disciple?
If his disciple wasn’t immobile at the moment, he would have sent her to investigate what was going on outside. It would have been a good experience for her.
What a pity that he didn’t know earlier that a silent night would come.
Now he had to take care of it himself and he didn’t feel like that.
It wasn’t like he could send a random person from the sect to do it. They wouldn’t be capable of doing it.
