Chapter 307: 307
Standing in the barrier of the Heavenly Law, Michelle was finally going to test how the Heavenly Law viewed her. Summoning her spirit energy, she pushed it to her forehead, making a purple gem appear there. The Life Stone of the Orange Widow.
At the same time, she pushed some of her spirit energy out, letting it spread around the barrier.
Within her own body, she didn’t feel anything change, but she was guessing that the Heavenly Law already had its eye on her. If she nudged it just a bit more, it would definitely give some reaction.
And what better way was there to get the Heavenly Law to react than to directly show it she had changed? That her abilities surpassed both humans and monsters.
She could do a few things to achieve that: change into a small black gem, or absorb another Life Stone while in the barrier.
Or she could even show off the physical changes in her body. For example, her new mobility, or how her scent had changed.
Naturally, Michelle didn’t have to do just one thing. She could do more one after the other.
So she started with the thing easiest to do.
Still within the barrier, she stretched out her hands to her sides and started twisting them in ways no human could attain. Sitting down, she did the same with her legs too.
And to completely top it off, she turned her head completely backwards.
It wasn’t a nice feeling to be able to twist herself up so much, but Michelle still did it. All so the Heavenly Law could see it.
And she felt a reaction.
As if the Heavenly Law didn’t like the way she was moving, the barrier started pressing down on her twisted joints, as if trying to force her to move her limbs into normal positions.
But the power the barrier exerted wasn’t all that great, so Michelle easily resisted it and continued doing her things.
Pulling her hands back and straightening up, Michelle summoned her dark element spirit energy and started enveloping it around herself.
Soon, she started feeling her body beginning to transform.
When she retracted the spirit energy, there weren’t any signs of a human standing in the barrier. Only a black gem was left behind, lying on the ground.
It was clear that the Heavenly Law recognized it was Michelle, because it kept the pressure on her. It even added a bit more power to it. It clearly didn’t like what Michelle had become.
Michelle took her human form back on and stretched her hands and neck. Then, she formed an ice spike in her hand.
The next moment, she stabbed the spike into her forearm, letting blood flow out.
The blood didn’t even have the chance to properly stain her hand before Michelle felt like something had punched her in the gut. The force of it sent her stumbling back, stepping back into the upper realm.
Touching her stomach, Michelle frowned. It hurt like hell.
Wrapping some ice around her wound to prevent the scent of blood from spreading, Michelle stared at the place where she had been standing just a while ago.
Did the Heavenly Law reject her?
Stretching her hand out, she tried to find the invisible wall that would block her, but she couldn’t touch anything.
Did that mean the Heavenly Law decided to take her as nonexistent, and the punch was its last interaction with her?
Michelle decided to put it to the test.
Stepping forward, she walked towards the middle realm.
Just like with her hand, nothing blocked her. Everything was going smoothly.
But the moment she reached the place where she remembered the barrier was, she felt another strike to her gut, forcing her back.
“Uuu-” Michelle let out a slow breath. The pain was much worse than after the first strike.
Holding back a curse, she decided to try again. She wanted to see just how serious the Heavenly Law was.
Since it was a law, it should be absolute. So since it had once decided to not let Michelle pass and punch her whenever she tried, it should do so always, no matter how many times she did it.
But still, Michelle wanted to be sure about it. Maybe she would find out that the Heavenly Law wasn’t all that absolute. Maybe she was more stubborn than it.
Or maybe not.
Once again, she walked towards the middle realm.
Things went the same as before, with the only difference being that the strike not only forced her back but even made her fall over. She was sure that a nasty bruise had formed on her abdomen.
But that didn’t make her give up. Jumping to her feet, she walked towards the middle realm again.
And again and again.
For over an hour, Michelle kept getting punched out of the barrier, each time with more force, which in turn made it so it took her a bit longer to get up.
When Michelle decided to test the Heavenly Law one last time, the strike to her stomach was so great that she ended up curled up on the ground, a cramp gripping her abdomen. She was unable to get up for a good while.
The muscles in her abdomen were twitching from the damage, causing Michelle even more pain.
Forcing herself to at least sit up, Michelle knew the Heavenly Law had won. She had to give up.
But she didn’t like the feeling. It left a nasty aftertaste in her mouth.
Glaring at the place where the barrier stood, Michelle started thinking of new methods to test the Heavenly Law.
And she got an idea.
How would the Heavenly Law’s view of her change if she absorbed one more Life Stone?
Reaching into her space, she pulled out a pouch with Life Stones of her elements. She was hesitant to take one out.
First of all, she couldn’t exactly control what element she would take out, since the Life Stones were mixed up in the pouch.
The ability of the Orange Widow worked upon the smallest contact with the Life Stones, so if she tried to search for the right Life Stone, she would end up also absorbing the ones she touched along the way.
Such uncontrolled absorption could bring about a lot of problems. Abilities she couldn’t control. Wrath from the Heavenly Law. Side effects. Or she could even lose herself in the power she would absorb from the stones.
All those things that could, but also could not, happen were dangerous. So Michelle wanted to avoid them at all costs.
Also, Michelle didn’t even know what Life Stone she wanted to absorb. She had already decided it would be one of the ice element, since that was the only one of her elements which wasn’t yet supported by a Life Stone.
But which one of the many Life Stones in the pouch? That was a question she didn’t have an answer to. She didn’t even remember what ice-element monsters she had killed, so she had no clue about the abilities she could get from it.
The fear of the unknown was one of the biggest fears humans could have.
Michelle wasn’t a human anymore, and even when she was one, her fear of the unknown was much suppressed by the temptation to explore it. So when she herself had become an uncategorized creature, her fear of the unknown was nearly gone.
But she was still hesitant to absorb a random Life Stone.
Because she knew what could happen. There was less unknown for her to be scared of than what she already knew to be scared of.
Staring at the pouch in her hands, Michelle called Nyxaroth and asked him to take out a random ice-element Life Stone.
Nyxaroth obliged and pulled out a single gem, putting it on the ground next to Michelle. After that, he didn’t retreat into Michelle’s body. He decided to observe things from the outside.
Seeing the ice-element Life Stone next to her, Michelle stored the pouch away.
Kicking the Life Stone lightly, she nudged it until it stopped against the barrier of the Heavenly Law.
Partially stepping into the barrier, to a place where she didn’t yet receive a strike, Michelle bent down and picked up the Life Stone.
Nearly instantly, she felt the ability of the Orange Widow activate within her. Her body started absorbing the Life Stone.
The process was fast. Her body devoured the Life Stone rapidly, like it was the most delicious treat that would disappear if it was left alone for a moment longer.
When the process was done, Michelle was enveloped in something like a small blizzard. She couldn’t see an inch in front of her. All she could see was milky white snow.
Seeing that, Michelle remembered a monster she had killed in the Sloan family house. The Sloans had many contracted beasts or trapped monsters, and quite a lot of them were of the ice element.
It wasn’t surprising, since the Sloan family lived in cold regions where most creatures possessed the ice element.
And amongst them, Michelle clearly remembered a caged creature.
Most of the creatures and people in the Sloan family were killed by her poison, but that creature didn’t die. It was just severely weakened.
So Michelle had to kill it herself, especially since it was extremely aggressive. She didn’t want to risk the monster coming after her for revenge. She liked to tie up all loose ends before moving on from her business.
But since the monster had interested Michelle greatly, she went to Rivenaar’s memories to check what it was. And what she found out greatly surprised her.
Though it looked like an oversized white dog, its name was Frostbound Leviathan, something that made completely no sense, at least when looking at the monster’s appearance.
