Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Rivals Meet, Jealousy Flares
Not far away, Kenneth Yates watched them, a wine glass in hand. He’d spotted Caleb Bell the moment he ran out and had followed to see what was happening. He never imagined that when Summer Lancaster said she had something to do, it was actually to meet with him.
Summer Lancaster happened to glance over and see Kenneth Yates. Right then, he looked less like a prince and more like a demon, his eyes dark as he stared at her. He started walking toward them, one step at a time. Summer panicked. ’He must have seen everything.’ Caleb Bell noticed her tension and turned to see who was approaching. It was Kenneth Yates, the business prodigy—someone everyone at the banquet tonight would surely recognize.
“President Yates!” Caleb Bell said politely, extending his right hand. Kenneth Yates merely glanced at him before fixing his gaze back on Summer Lancaster.
“Kenneth Yates, let’s go back inside!” Summer Lancaster said, grabbing his arm and trying to lead him back into the banquet hall. Kenneth Yates shook her hand off.
“So, President Yates knows Summer,” Caleb Bell said, withdrawing his hand and sizing him up.
“I work for his company!” Summer Lancaster jumped in to explain before Kenneth Yates could speak.
“I’m her husband,” Kenneth Yates said, his expression blank.
The smile on Caleb Bell’s face froze. ’Summer… she married Kenneth Yates? This man can’t give her what she wants. He’ll just bleed her dry, step by step, and then throw her away. This man is dangerous!’
Caleb Bell reined in his emotions. “Summer twisted her ankle a moment ago. You should take her home.” Without a word, Kenneth Yates turned and walked away. Summer Lancaster scrambled to follow, glancing back at Caleb Bell to say, “I’ll call you later.” Caleb Bell smiled and nodded, but the moment she turned away, his face grew sinister.
No one spoke in the car. With a sullen expression, Kenneth Yates smoked his cigarette while Summer Lancaster stared out the window.
“So ’having something to do’ meant going to find him?” Kenneth Yates asked coldly, tossing his cigarette away.
“I just happened to run into him.” Summer Lancaster kept her head down, not daring to meet his gaze.
“Hmph. You just happened to run into him and fall into his arms?” Kenneth Yates scoffed.
“That’s not it. You’ve got it all wrong. I almost fell down the stairs, and Caleb caught me.” Summer Lancaster looked at him. ’This man is being so unreasonable.’
“I’ve told you over and over again not to get involved with him! Are you deaf?” Kenneth Yates roared. Caleb Bell was not a simple man; his methods were ruthless, and Kenneth had dealt with him a few times before.
“I’m not deaf. But maybe *someone* is being a little too sensitive. If *someone* is jealous, they should just come out and say it,” Summer Lancaster retorted, crossing her arms as she looked at him.
“*Someone*? …And who might that be?”
“Well, it’s not you!” Summer Lancaster snapped, turning away from him.
When they arrived at Veridian Community, Summer Lancaster got out of the car and walked on ahead. Kenneth Yates followed, calling Dominic Thorne to tell him not to worry about them. Hearing his voice, Summer, who was up ahead, was suddenly reminded of Dominic Thorne and stopped in her tracks.
“What’s wrong? Not walking anymore? You were in such a hurry a moment ago,” Kenneth Yates said, watching her with a teasing smirk, assuming she was about to apologize.
“What’s Dominic Thorne like?”
Kenneth Yates’s expression instantly soured. “You want to know about him that badly? Go ask him yourself.” With that, he strode forward, not waiting for Summer Lancaster. His legs were long and his pace was fast, forcing Summer to jog to keep up with him.
“Kenneth Yates, wait up!”
THUD!
Kenneth Yates had stopped abruptly, and Summer Lancaster, who had been watching her feet, crashed right into his back.
“Ow, my nose! That hurts,” Summer Lancaster cried, clutching her nose, her face scrunched up in pain.
“Kenneth Yates, why’d you stop all of a sudden?”
Kenneth Yates turned around and abruptly closed the distance between them, his face just inches from hers.
“Kenneth Yates, you… what are you doing so close?” Summer Lancaster asked shyly, her eyes wide.
“Have you met Dominic before?” he asked, leaning in so close that his lips brushed against hers as he spoke.
