Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Craving
Dominic Thorne was in his room, holding a video conference. The company had been incredibly busy lately. Even though he wasn’t at the office, he still had to make decisions. His secretary called him every day with a report, and today, they had insisted he join a video meeting.
“Mr. Thorne? Mr. Thorne?”
Dominic Thorne snapped back to reality. He had found himself unintentionally thinking of Melody Donovan’s smile a lot lately. Her smile was so innocent and warm it could shine right into a person’s heart, filling them with joy.
“Ah, where were we? Continue,” Dominic Thorne said, wiping the smile from his lips.
When Wendy Vaughn entered the room, she saw Sean Murphy sitting by the bed, holding Ronan Jenkins’s hand. She knew Ronan. In her memory, he was cold and taciturn; very few things could stir his emotions or even cause his brow to furrow slightly. She never expected to see him lying in bed, so weak.
“Wendy, what are you doing here?” Sean Murphy hadn’t expected Wendy Vaughn to show up and quickly let go of Ronan Jenkins’s hand to go to her side.
“Your father told me you were kidnapped. I was worried sick,” she said, wrapping her arms around Sean’s waist as her eyes grew moist.
“Silly girl, you can see for yourself that I’m fine. Don’t cry.” Sean Murphy gently stroked Wendy Vaughn’s hair, comforting her in a soft voice. In his eyes, she was like a little sister he had to look after carefully.
Wendy Vaughn sobbed and closed her eyes. She had been truly worried about Sean. When she heard he’d been kidnapped, she had nearly fainted several times. Thank goodness he was all right.
“Ronan… what happened to him?” Wendy Vaughn asked, letting go of Sean Murphy and looking at him with concern.
Sean Murphy looked toward Ronan Jenkins. After a long pause, he spoke softly, “It was to save me.”
Wendy Vaughn’s heart skipped a beat. ’So, if Ronan Jenkins hadn’t saved Sean Murphy, Sean would be the one lying here right now? I can’t believe it. I don’t even know what kind of work Sean does for it to be this dangerous.’
Her gaze shifted to Sean Murphy. His eyes were filled with tenderness and affection as he stared at Ronan Jenkins. It was as if Ronan’s pale face held some irresistible magic, captivating Sean’s attention completely.
Wendy Vaughn tugged on the distracted Sean. “Sean, let’s go outside.”
Sean Murphy snapped out of his daze and left the room with her. Ronan Jenkins really did need to rest quietly; they couldn’t disturb him.
After they left, the man on the bed’s fingers twitched slightly. In truth, Ronan Jenkins had been awake for a while. He was simply cherishing the way Sean Murphy was taking care of him—washing his body, holding his hand while reminiscing about their childhood. Once he “woke up,” however, all of that would disappear. Sean would no longer hold his hand so tenderly.
’Time’s up. Whether you’re a prince or a princess, it’s time to wake up and face reality.’
Ronan Jenkins struggled to sit up. This injury was truly severe; he had never experienced such a painful moment before. ’Maybe it’s because this has to do with Sean,’ he thought, ’or maybe the wound is just that bad.’ But none of that mattered now. He had to go back to being the Dark Night Earl, protecting Sean Murphy from the shadows.
Ronan Jenkins pulled the IV needle from his hand and struggled out of bed. Every step sent a wave of extreme dizziness through him, but he pushed on. His expression gave no hint that he was so grievously injured, but the color of his face betrayed him. He had always been good at hiding his true self, even forcing himself to disguise his own feelings. He just wanted Sean Murphy to live a happy life and had no desire to cause him any trouble.
“Heh… It’s better if we just stay like this,” he said with a bitter smile.
