Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Making Out on the Street
“Ah, who are you? Let me go.” Summer Lancaster struggled restlessly in Kenneth Yates’s arms, swinging her hand and almost hitting him. Luckily, he was fast enough to dodge. Kenneth placed her in the front passenger seat, but she stubbornly climbed out and collapsed on the ground.
“I don’t want to get in the car! Not in an asshole’s car!” she yelled, leaving Kenneth at a bit of a loss.
“Then what do you want?” Kenneth asked, helping her up.
“Carry me on your back.” Summer grinned foolishly, completely unaware of how much trouble her current behavior would cause her later on—like not being able to get out of bed…
Kenneth had no choice but to lift Summer onto his back and start walking home. She was still restless, even on his back.
“Dominic Thorne, why do you call that asshole ’Boss’? How is he anything like a boss? He’s just a scumbag.” Kenneth’s face darkened. The boss was very displeased.
“Summer, take a good look at who I am.” Kenneth kept his voice low, suppressing his anger and trying to remain calm.
“Who are you? You’re Dominic Thorne, the man Melody Donovan has been in love with for five years.” As she spoke, Summer pinched “Dominic Thorne’s” cheek.
“Huh? Dominic Thorne, why is your face so cold?” At that moment, Kenneth truly felt he must have a screw loose to be bothering with this crazy woman.
It was very late. They were walking along the riverbank, the glittering surface of the water reflecting their silhouettes. Summer was completely draped over Kenneth’s back, her head resting on his shoulder.
“Dominic Thorne, do you think Kenneth likes me?” Summer suddenly asked. Kenneth could hear the sorrow in her voice. ’This woman,’ he thought. ’I’ve clearly told her I like her. Does she not believe me, or does she just think I’m teasing her?’
“He does.”
“How do you know?” Summer lifted her small face, overjoyed, and waited for his answer. Kenneth set her down on a bench by the river and, before she could react, leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. Her lips tasted strongly of wine. Women themselves are like wine, intoxicating. And right now, Kenneth was drunk—drunk on her.
His assault was fierce. He pressed her against the bench, kissing her with a frenzy that seemed to swallow her whole. Summer began to struggle for breath, and a murmur rose from the people around them. Only then did Kenneth let her go. Seeing her panting for air, he forcefully tilted her chin up, making her look at him.
“Look closely at who I am,” he commanded, his gaze turning vicious.
Summer jumped, the shock sobering her up halfway. “Ken… Kenneth Yates, what are you doing here?”
“If I weren’t here, wouldn’t you be announcing to the whole world that I, Kenneth Yates, am an asshole?” His eyes radiated a dangerous aura.
’Was it him this whole time? Did she really mistake him for Dominic Thorne?’ Summer shook her head. ’No, that’s not right. I was the one who was angry. How did the tables turn and now he’s the one angry at me?’
“Kenneth Yates, let go of me! I want to go home.” Summer tried to struggle free, but to no avail.
“Look around. Do you even know where you are?” Kenneth took the opportunity to sit down, pulling her tightly into his embrace.
Summer was dazed. ’How did I end up here? And where is ’here,’ anyway…’
“Why did you bring me here?” Summer demanded.
“A certain someone said she didn’t want to take the car and insisted I carry her on my back.” Summer’s face flushed. ’Those words sound so familiar. I think I might have said that.’
“I went to the West Family’s home the other day because President West invited me to a banquet. I’ve already made it clear to them that I’m married.”
Summer looked up at him. ’Is he… explaining things to me?’ He gazed at her dotingly and pulled her onto his lap. Summer wrapped her arms around his neck. “Then what about this morning? Why were you with Reina West? And you even gave her a tissue.”
“Her father got sick last night. On top of that, she found out I was married and was heartbroken. She just kept crying, and I couldn’t just stand there and watch her, could I?” Kenneth explained. Summer pouted. “Fine. I’ll forgive you this time.”
