Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Expecting Nothing in Return
Kenneth pushed open the door and saw the lifeless Ronan Jenkins on the bed. He froze, watching him from the doorway as a sense of guilt washed over him. ’It’s all my fault,’ he thought. ’If I hadn’t come back to the country that night, none of this would have happened.’
Kenneth didn’t go near the bed. He just stood in the doorway for a moment before leaving the room.
When he came out, Sean Murphy was sitting on the sofa, staring into space. The television was on, broadcasting a jumble of laughter, but he didn’t seem to be paying it any attention.
“You should spend more time with Ronan,” Kenneth said with a sigh, sitting down beside him. He picked up the remote and turned off the TV. “He’ll wake up for you.”
“Boss, am I a complete asshole?” Sean Murphy asked, turning his head to look at him, his voice full of self-loathing.
Kenneth put a hand on Sean Murphy’s shoulder. “Sean, you’re still young, and there are some things you don’t understand yet. In matters of the heart, no one can be perfect, but people still find ways to be happy. He would have wanted to be the one lying there. If your roles were reversed, he would be even more devastated. That’s just who he is—someone who gives his all for a person without expecting anything in return.”
Kenneth lowered his hand and met his eyes. Sean’s expression had softened. “So, you don’t have to blame yourself. Everything is going to be alright. He’ll still be the same Ronan Jenkins, right by your side, protecting you.”
“Okay, Boss. I’ll go sit with him.” Sean Murphy stood, walked past Kenneth, and headed for the patient’s room.
Kenneth gave a wry smile. ’I wonder if he understood any of that.’ Feelings like these were tempered by time; they wouldn’t vanish just because of a single word or action. Ronan would never truly leave him, much less hate him.
Dinner was ready. Felix Locke had just taken off his apron when the doorbell rang. ’Who could be here at this hour? This place is our private base. No one else knows about it.’
The ringing was insistent. Felix Locke hastily dropped his apron and ran to get the door.
He was stunned by the person at the door. It was Wendy Vaughn, Sean Murphy’s girlfriend. They had met on a blind date. With comparable family backgrounds and both being seen as flawless catches, they had ended up as a couple. In reality, Sean had only chosen the cultured and sensible Wendy Vaughn because he didn’t want to endure any more blind dates. He had never told her he liked her, nor had he ever introduced her to anyone as his girlfriend.
’How did she find this place?’
“I heard Sean was kidnapped! Is he alright?” Her hair was a mess and there were smudges on the soles of her shoes. It was easy to see she had come in a hurry.
“Sean is fine. You don’t have to worry,” Felix Locke said, letting her into the house.
As she entered, Kenneth merely glanced at her and gave a small nod of acknowledgment before saying nothing more.
“Where’s Sean? I want to see him.”
Felix Locke didn’t say a word, simply pointing to the room across the hall.
“Thank you.” Wendy Vaughn rushed toward the room.
“Boss, things just got a little complicated,” Felix Locke said with a grimace, leaning back against the sofa.
Kenneth stood up to face him, his hands in his pockets. “Wendy Vaughn is just his excuse to get out of blind dates.”
“But it looks like she’s taking it seriously,” Felix Locke said, deeply worried. He was afraid Sean would end up breaking her heart. Sean’s kindness toward Wendy Vaughn was probably just the affection an older brother feels for a little sister. But Wendy had misunderstood and treated him like a real boyfriend all this time. ’When the truth finally comes out,’ Felix wondered, ’whose scars will be laid bare?’
“Have faith in Sean. He’ll handle it,” Kenneth said before leaving the living room.
