Chapter 31: Chapter 31: A Warm Breakfast
Seeing her odd outfit, Kenneth Yates covered his face and let out a knowing laugh.
“What are you laughing at!” Summer Lancaster thought he was a far cry from his “cool and aloof” reputation; he had turned into a complete rogue. She hadn’t realized that he had changed so much… all for her.
“You look beautiful today.” Kenneth Yates took Summer Lancaster’s hand and led her outside. Summer Lancaster hadn’t expected him to say she was beautiful. Her face, which had just returned to its normal color, flushed red again, and she lowered her head, letting him lead her by the hand.
Her car sat in the corner as if abandoned, completely forgotten.
Kenneth Yates took Summer Lancaster to a French breakfast restaurant. The moment they stepped inside, they were greeted by an air of natural elegance. A magnificent crystal chandelier and a beautifully patterned carpet complemented each other, while orange-yellow dining chairs and abstract paintings on the walls brought a touch of vitality to the space. A waiter smiled and took their order. It had to be said, dining in a restaurant like this could put anyone in a good mood for the rest of the day. In the end, they ordered two servings of toast with cheese and sunny-side-up eggs, and two bowls of century egg and lean pork congee.
The two of them sat by the window. Pedestrians came and went outside, but they only had eyes for each other.
Ethan Yates had been teaching at Aurelian University since returning home. He was very popular on campus, and his classes were always packed. That day, he was on his way to the university when, while waiting at a red light, he saw Summer Lancaster and Kenneth Yates eating breakfast. Summer Lancaster was smiling, looking very happy, and Kenneth Yates wore a soft smile as well.
They looked so sweet together. As far as Ethan Yates could remember, Kenneth rarely smiled. ’It seems they have a great relationship.’
Ethan Yates started the engine, a smile touching his lips. ’As long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters…’
After breakfast, Kenneth Yates and Summer Lancaster headed to the office. As they reached the entrance, it suddenly dawned on Summer that she had gotten out of the car and walked into the building with Kenneth. Who knew what kind of rumors their colleagues would start this time? It was the peak of the morning rush, and every elevator was crowded. At that moment, everyone was staring at them, whispering among themselves about Summer arriving with President Yates again.
“Kenneth Yates, this is all your fault. Why didn’t you remind me to get out of the car before we got here?” Summer Lancaster leaned in and whispered, a hint of annoyance on her face.
“Come here!” Without another word, Kenneth Yates pulled Summer Lancaster into the VIP elevator—the one reserved exclusively for the president. Summer was mortified. ’Now there’s no way I can explain this away…’
“Kenneth Yates, are you trying to get me killed?” Summer Lancaster shot him a sidelong glance.
“Would you rather stay out there and be the center of everyone’s attention?” Kenneth Yates asked, slipping his hands into his suit pockets and leaning against the elevator wall.
Summer Lancaster pressed a hand to her forehead. ’What a headache…’
Sure enough, for the rest of the day, everyone she met—superiors and subordinates alike—greeted her. She could only offer awkward replies. It was exhausting. Summer sat at her desk, propping her head in her hands with a pained expression. Just then, Serena Monroe pushed open the door and saw her. Before Serena could even speak, Summer quickly dropped her hand and waved her off. “Don’t say it. I know what you’re going to ask. I’m exhausted, so please, just spare me.”
“Hey now, Summer Lancaster, is our friendship just for show? How could I ask such a superficial question?” Serena Monroe leaned against the desk as Summer resumed her pained posture.
“So? What were you going to say?” Summer Lancaster asked, looking at her skeptically.
“What’s the deal with you and President Yates!” Serena Monroe’s eyes gleamed with the passion of a tabloid reporter.
THUD. The hand propping up Summer Lancaster’s head slipped, and her face fell onto the desk. She looked up with an expression of utter despair. “I knew it. If you’re not asking me about blind dates, you’re asking me about President Yates.”
