Chapter 46: Chapter 46: How About Never Leaving Your Side?
Outside the emergency room, Zane Fletcher called Kenneth Yates’s cell phone.
“President Yates, Director Lancaster is injured. I’m with her at the hospital now. I failed in my duty.”
“What? Is it serious?” Kenneth asked anxiously, his grip nearly crushing the phone.
“We don’t know yet. She’s still unconscious, but it seems Director West was behind it,” Zane Fletcher reported.
“Alright, I understand. Stay by her side and take care of her.” ’Reina West again. That woman is unbelievably audacious. I’m only gone for a day and she’s already hurt Summer Lancaster.’
“Dominic, book me a flight for tonight. I’m flying back home.”
“But, Boss…”
“No buts.” They were supposed to negotiate with Carls today, but since Kenneth insisted, they had no other choice.
“You all go negotiate with Carls today. Bring your guns, but it’s best to avoid a direct confrontation.”
“Yeah, I got it, Boss. Don’t worry.”
A long time passed before Summer Lancaster finally woke up. Zane Fletcher had been by her bedside the whole time and hurried to pour her some water when he saw she was awake.
“Fletcher, what time is it?” Summer Lancaster’s head felt dizzy and heavy. She tried to sit up but didn’t have the strength, so Zane Fletcher helped her.
“Six o’clock.”
“Ugh, my head hurts so much.” Summer Lancaster clutched her head, her face contorted in pain.
“Ma’am, the doctor said it’s a mild concussion. It’s not too serious, and you should be fine after a few days of rest.”
“Fletcher, please don’t call me Ma’am. Just call me Summer.”
“Okay, and you can call me Zane,” Zane Fletcher said with a bashful smile. “Oh, by the way, we’re going to pull the security footage from the time of the accident to find out who was behind it. President Yates will personally see that justice is done.”
“He knows?”
“I’m the one who told President Yates. The truth is, he instructed me to protect you before he left. A large part of the responsibility for your injury falls on me.”
“Zane, don’t say that. I’m fine now. It’s getting late, you should head home.”
“But President Yates…”
“I’ll call him.”
“Alright then. Call me if you need anything.”
“Okay.”
After he left, Summer Lancaster picked up her phone and called Kenneth Yates. He answered right away.
“Summer, how are you?” Kenneth asked, having clearly rushed to answer.
“I’m fine now. I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”
“Not at all.”
“Are you working out? You sound out of breath,” Summer asked, hearing the raggedness in his voice.
“Yeah. One minute left.”
“What do you mean, one minute left?”
BANG. The door flew open. Kenneth Yates stood in the doorway, panting heavily. Sitting on the bed, Summer Lancaster stared in shock as the phone slipped from her ear and fell to the floor.
“Why are you back?” Tears burst from Summer Lancaster’s eyes. The tough facade she had put on for others shattered in an instant; she was truly in pain. Kenneth walked over to her, step by step, and wiped away her tears. “What are you crying for? Your face is all blotchy. So ugly.”
Hearing this, Summer Lancaster couldn’t help but laugh through her tears. “You’re the ugly one.”
“Still have enough energy to talk back, I see. Guess it’s not too serious.” Relieved, Kenneth wrapped her in his arms.
“It is serious! I hurt my head. It’s a concussion, so I’m going to get dumber,” Summer Lancaster said with a mischievous grin from within his embrace.
“If you get dumber, I’ll just have to keep you locked up by my side and never let you leave.” Of course, Kenneth already knew her actual condition; Zane Fletcher had told him immediately. He was just playing along to tease Summer.
Summer Lancaster looked up at Kenneth, and seeing the earnest expression on his face, she hugged him tightly.
