Chapter 92: Chapter 92: Clasped Hands
Dominic Thorne quickly got them up the mountain. He had notified Ronan Jenkins the moment he received the signal, and their helicopter was already waiting. Summer Lancaster was past the point of being surprised when she saw it; all she wanted was to get Kenneth to a hospital as quickly as possible.
The helicopter only flew them to the base of the mountain. The hospital was in the city, so they couldn’t fly the rest of the way.
Dominic Thorne drove at a frantic pace. In the back seat, Kenneth Yates lay unconscious with his head in Summer Lancaster’s lap. The wound on his head had split open again, turning her dress a stark crimson.
“Kenneth, you have to be okay. I believe in you… but you still owe me an explanation…” Summer’s eyes were vacant, her body trembled, and tears streamed endlessly down her face.
Up front, Dominic’s eyes were fixed on the road, his usual playboy demeanor completely gone.
Ronan Jenkins, in the passenger seat, found the somber atmosphere deeply unsettling. “Summer, don’t worry,” he said, trying to reassure her. “He’s going to be okay!”
With tear-filled eyes, Summer looked up at him and managed a faint, forced smile.
“Summer, he’s been through things like this more times than I can count,” Ronan insisted. “Trust me, he’ll be fine!”
Summer was stunned. ’What kind of life did this man in my arms lead during all the time I didn’t know him? He’s so gifted. He could have just lived quietly as a carefree heir. Why does he push himself so hard?’
A medical team was on standby when the car pulled up to the hospital. But Kenneth refused to let go of Summer’s hand, and the doctors were at a loss. At that moment, Dominic barked an order, “Let her go in!”
The doctors didn’t dare hesitate. They wheeled Kenneth into the operating room, with Summer right beside him, gripping his hand tightly…
Summer looked down at his battered, bloody body. ’If only I could bear all this for him.’ Watching the man she loved suffer alone was like a needle piercing her heart.
“Ma’am, what is your relationship to the patient?” a nearby nurse suddenly asked.
Summer wiped away her tears. “I’m his wife!”
“The patient needs a transfusion. Do you know of any relatives who are also RH-negative?”
“I am. Use my blood.” Summer held out her arm. ’Heaven had blessed them with this precious blood type. She’d known since she was a child that their blood was different from most people’s, and because of it, she always felt they were a match made in heaven.’
Summer lay on a cot beside him, watching her blood flow through the tube. ’If he needed it, she would give him every last drop, as long as it meant he would recover.’
The surgery was a success. When the doctor came out, he told Dominic and Ronan that the patient needed absolute rest and should not be agitated. He added that Summer had given too much blood and had fallen into a coma, requiring a few days of hospitalization for observation.
The knot of anxiety in Dominic’s chest finally loosened. ’As long as they’re okay.’ Through the window in the door, he and Ronan saw the pair lying quietly in their beds. They were both pale, but their hands were still clasped tightly together. Dominic turned and headed down the corridor, and Ronan followed.
“We can call off the search for Thea Shaw,” Dominic said, a smirk playing on his lips as he pulled out a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth.
“I agree,” Ronan said with a smile. ’In this world, you can’t decide someone else’s happiness for them. A missed chance is a missed chance. Why try to force things?’
