Chapter 97: Chapter 97: See You in Court
“The doctor has already confirmed the details. He’s at this very hospital, so feel free to go ask him yourselves.”
Yvonne Lancaster and Audrey Adler froze. They hadn’t expected him to know everything, let alone to have investigated it so thoroughly.
“I had my people record your entire transaction. Care to take a look?” Kenneth said, his eyes narrowing nonchalantly.
“Th-…” Gregory Lancaster spun around to face Audrey Adler and her daughter, his face contorted with anger. “Is it all true?”
Just as Audrey Adler was about to speak, Summer Lancaster emerged from the restroom. Seeing them didn’t cause a ripple in her heart; instead, she felt an abnormal calm. She said nothing to any of them, not even Gregory Lancaster. She walked right past them to Kenneth’s bedside.
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh, your father stopped by. Wanted to discuss your little kidnapping incident,” Kenneth said breezily.
Summer froze, then turned around. “There’s nothing left to discuss. It was me. I was jealous of them, so I made it all up. If there’s nothing else, you should leave.” It was the first time she had ever spoken so coldly to her own father.
Yvonne was secretly overjoyed. She tugged on Gregory Lancaster’s arm, whining, “That’s right, Daddy! It was Summer… my sister! She was just jealous of how good you are to us, so she framed us!”
“I’ve already found the report. It will be sent to your company tomorrow along with the video. If your dear daughter insists, we’ll see each other in court!” Kenneth, who had been silent until now, rose to his feet and spoke, glaring fiercely at them.
Yvonne had thought the matter was settled. She never expected Kenneth to interject, and she was so frightened that she grabbed Audrey Adler’s arm and burst into tears.
Gregory Lancaster could now see the truth of the matter. They had, in fact, hired someone to kidnap Summer. But they were his family, after all, and it wouldn’t do for things to escalate. Besides, they were no match for Kenneth.
“Kenneth, listen. We’re all family here. Yvonne is still young; it’s natural for her to make mistakes. Don’t hold it against her. She knows she was wrong. Yvonne, get over here and apologize to your sister!” Gregory Lancaster bellowed.
Yvonne walked over to Summer, trembling, and bowed her head. “I’m sor—”
“I don’t accept!” Summer cut her off. She turned and walked away. “She’s young, but is Audrey Adler young, too?” Summer demanded of Gregory Lancaster, her voice rising hysterically.
Kenneth watched from the side, a complex mix of emotions swirling within him. ’What exactly did Summer have to endure all alone that night he was away? She was always so good-natured, yet now she wouldn’t even accept an apology.’
Gregory Lancaster’s expression turned grim. He never thought that the ever-obedient Summer would say something like that.
“Summer, Yvonne is your sister, and Miss Alder is your stepmother. We’re all family. Who doesn’t make mistakes? Can’t you just let it go as a favor to your dad?”
“I don’t have family members who try to destroy me!” Tears welled in Summer’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
Seeing her pain, Kenneth’s heart ached for her. He lay back down on the bed and closed his eyes.
“I need to rest now. Please leave.”
“But, Kenneth—” Gregory Lancaster protested desperately.
“Didn’t you hear the patient say he needs to rest? You have no integrity, so I guess you have no manners either?” Summer said, sitting on the edge of the bed and shooting them a sideways glare.
Gregory Lancaster’s face turned ashen. Left with no other choice, they could only retreat for now and figure out their next move.
Once they were out of the hospital, Yvonne burst into tears. “Daddy, what am I going to do?”
“You… this is all my fault for spoiling you. Don’t you have any idea what lines shouldn’t be crossed, doing something so outrageous? And you,” he added, turning to Audrey, “you’re a grown woman. Are you going to fool around and cause trouble with Yvonne too?”
