Chapter 51: Chapter 51: A Life for a Life
“Miles, I think he went out with Kenneth Yates to take care of something. You two should talk things out when he gets back. I’ve actually met him before, but Kenneth told me he’s a player, so I never said anything. I can’t believe you two still ended up meeting.” Summer Lancaster placed her hand on Miles Donovan’s cold one. “He’s really not right for you, Miles. Trust me. Just write it off as a bad experience. He can’t give you the love you’re looking for.”
Miles Donovan looked up at Summer Lancaster, his expression filled with disappointment. “But I’m so in love with him. From college until now… it’s been so many years. He’s the only one I’ve ever had feelings for.”
“Miles, don’t let him trample all over your dignity. Don’t wait until you’re beaten black and blue before you decide to pull back.”
“Yeah, I’ll give it some serious thought.”
「Francelia」
That evening, Kenneth Yates and his men made their way to an old warehouse. They had to rescue Sean Murphy, no matter the cost. Their original target had been Kenneth, but he hadn’t shown up, so they’d kidnapped Sean instead. Because of this, Kenneth felt responsible. Dominic Thorne had urged him not to go, insisting it was a trap set by Carls. He argued they could just bring their men, wipe out the enemy, and save Sean, but Kenneth had a feeling things weren’t that simple.
Inside the old warehouse, Noel Lynch was sipping coffee in a lavishly furnished room when his phone rang.
“Hello.”
“It’s me. How are things progressing?” The voice on the other end of the line was chilling.
“Soon, you’ll get your wish.”
CLICK. The call ended. A victorious smile spread across Noel Lynch’s face as he slowly made his way outside. ’Five more minutes. They should be here.’
At seven o’clock sharp, Kenneth Yates, Dominic Thorne, and Ronan Jenkins opened the large warehouse doors. They strode purposefully toward a man sitting in a chair with his back to them. The man was clearly not Carls, but a Chinese man.
“Long time no see, Kenneth Yates.” Noel Lynch rose from the chair and turned to face them.
“Hmph. I knew it’d be you.” Kenneth Yates wasn’t surprised. Noel was the only one who would target him so relentlessly.
“Boss.” Dominic Thorne knew of Noel Lynch. For some unknown reason, the man despised Kenneth Yates and was always trying to kill him. That meant Kenneth was in grave danger.
“It’s fine. Stay out of this. I’ve got it under control.” Kenneth Yates held up a hand, blocking Dominic Thorne and motioning for him to back away.
“Where’s Sean Murphy?” Kenneth Yates got straight to the point. He didn’t want to waste words on Noel Lynch.
Noel Lynch gestured, and one of his men shoved Sean Murphy forward. Sean’s mouth was covered with tape, and his hands were bound behind his back, but he appeared to have no other injuries.
Fury blazed in Ronan Jenkins’s eyes when he saw him.
“What will it take for you to release him?”
“You stay!” Noel Lynch pointed at the empty chair.
Dominic Thorne moved in close behind Kenneth Yates. “Boss, let’s just fight them. Our men are already outside.”
“What’ll it be? A life for a life.” Noel Lynch seemed to be growing impatient.
“Done!” Kenneth Yates walked over and sat down in the chair. “Let Sean Murphy go.”
Noel Lynch laughed, reaching into Kenneth’s coat and pulling out a gun. “So you did come prepared.”
“Boss!” Dominic Thorne lunged forward, intending to shoot Noel Lynch on the spot, but Ronan Jenkins blocked his path.
“Don’t be reckless.”
Frustrated, Dominic Thorne tore off his jacket and threw it to the ground.
“Release Sean Murphy!” Kenneth Yates repeated. ’Noel never starts a fight he isn’t prepared for; I know that much about him. Our chances of winning a direct fight are slim. For now, all we can do is wait for his next move and act accordingly.’
“Release him,” Noel Lynch commanded. One of his subordinates immediately shoved Sean Murphy forward. Ronan Jenkins rushed over, tore the tape from Sean’s mouth, and untied the ropes on his hands.
