Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Why Are You So Close?
After a quick rinse in the restroom, Summer Lancaster returned to the conference room, where the meeting was already halfway through. She gently sat back in her seat. “Where are we?” she quietly asked Serena Monroe. Serena opened the documents in front of her and pointed to a spot.
“Oh.”
Meanwhile, Kenneth Yates hadn’t been able to take his eyes off Summer Lancaster since she’d walked in. He noticed her skirt was damp and stained a light brown color.
“President Yates, what are your thoughts on this proposal?” a vice president asked respectfully, but Kenneth didn’t answer.
“President Yates?”
“Ah.” Kenneth tore his gaze away. “You can make the call.” Summer was engrossed in the documents, completely unaware that Kenneth had been staring at her. After the meeting, as Kenneth walked past her, he whispered, “Come by my office in a little while.”
“Yes, President.” After finishing her work, Summer went to the president’s office.
KNOCK KNOCK
“Come in.” Summer pushed the door open and walked inside. Kenneth was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, smoking.
“What did you need me for?” After what happened last time, she wasn’t about to let him mess with her again.
“There’s an outfit over there. Go get changed.” Summer looked toward the sofa and saw a dress lying there. She picked it up—it was her size.
“How did you know my dress size?”
Kenneth stepped closer to her. “I’ve felt it!” Summer’s face flushed red with anger. She snatched the dress and went into the office’s adjoining bedroom. After changing, she stood in front of the mirror. ’Kenneth really understands my style,’ she thought. ’This dress suits me perfectly.’
“Kenneth Yates, this dress… it wasn’t left here by one of your exes, was it?” Summer asked on a whim as she came out and saw him sitting in his chair.
“That’s right. One of my old flames left it behind,” Kenneth said without looking up. He was confident in his taste; he knew she would look beautiful without even needing to see her.
“Then I’d rather just change back into my own clothes,” Summer said, turning away in disappointment.
“I had Fletcher get it. What’s this about an old flame? You have such a wild imagination.” Kenneth stood up and walked toward her.
Summer turned her head, only to find Kenneth had already appeared right beside her.
“W-why are you so close?”
“No reason.” His fervent gaze was fixed on Summer.
“In that… in that case, I’ll get back to work.” Summer tried to leave, but Kenneth grabbed her arm and pulled her into his embrace. The scent of her hair put him at ease.
“Kenneth Yates, this is the office! Someone might see us.”
“Should I be afraid of people seeing me hug my own wife?” Summer flushed. ’Wife? That title… doesn’t sound half bad.’ Just then, a knock came from the door. Summer struggled out of his arms. “Time to get back to work.”
“Alright, go on.”
Reina West entered the office, brushing past Summer on her way out. She noticed Summer was wearing a different dress and felt a pang of frustration. ’Has Summer really managed to snag Kenneth? No matter. I’ll steal him away from her.’
“Director West, what can I do for you?” Kenneth asked mechanically. Reina West smiled and approached him. “Kenneth, my father was thinking of having dinner with you. Are you free tonight?” Kenneth had intended to refuse, but an invitation from Martin West wasn’t something he could easily turn down. Besides, he wanted to clear the air with him anyway.
“Yes, I’ll be there tonight.”
“Then… I’ll see you tonight.” A delighted expression appeared on Reina’s face.
“Mm.”
“Well, I’ll be on my way.” Reina walked out of the office, beaming.
