Chapter 117: Classi bad boy, classic white moonlight.
It was bound not to be a peaceful night, and that was why Liwu had dinner before going upstairs to take a shower. By the time she slipped under the blanket, Weijun was already there. He had showered from the main house and changed from over there. He smelled like medicinal herbs, probably from helping his brother with his wounds.
Weijun was propped against the headboard, his expression thoughtful. His broad shoulders seemed heavy from carrying more than the stress of the last twenty four hours.
Boldly, Liwu rested her head on his chest. “What, Sweet Rose? Why are you brooding?”
“Not brooding, thinking,” Weijun corrected, voice low and steady. Weifeng has returned, everything is officially out in the open. I should be pleased that he is home, and given his condition, I should be rejoicing that he did not die out there.” He gulped. “Yet I worry.”
Liwu tilted her head to look at him. “Worry about what? That another cow will try to sit on him or he will trip down another set of stairs.”
Weijun’s lips twitched, almost a smile. “I guess I don’t have to look far in order to trace the source of his bad luck. He gave me an outline of his injuries and all the dates coincide with days on which I did something to make you angry.”
Liwu snorted. “I have no idea what you are talking about. And I am a detective so every theory you have should be backed up with evidence.”
Weijun laughed. “I don’t have evidence but we both know the truth. What worries me is not the possibility of him encountering more bad luck, it’s his charisma. You met him, you saw it. Even when he is broken, he has a rose in his pocket, a charming grin….” He gaze softened but carried weight. “He was the one you were supposed to marry.”
Liwu blinked, the groaned. “Oh heavens, not this again. I told you last time that I am glad I married you not him.”
“Still,” Weijun murmured, “I fear that the past may stir. I meddle in your cases, I make you angry often. I am rude to you sometimes and I am suspicious of everything your family does. Weifeng is easy, polite…I fear you might….”
“Fall for him?” Liwu sat up, incredulous. “Did you see him tonight? He has a chipped tooth and he did not smell too nice. Besides, he is crazy in love with a certain actress. Even if he was not in love with Manman, I still wouldn’t fall for him because he has like a hundred ex girlfriends. And that move with the rose! He did it deliberately. If I fell for him, I’d need my head examined.”
Weijun chuckled softly, though his eyes remained serious. “Those are all facts, but he has his charm. All those women that accept his roses and date him know he cannot love them and still, they get involved with him.”
“Because they consider it a challenge.” Liwu rolled her eyes. “It is the classic, taming the bad boy obsession. And don’t talk to me about charm because I did not see any of that in him. The only captivating thing about your brother are the stories of his survival.”
Weijun’s hand brushed her neck. “You joke, but I have seen enough to know that hearts are fickle. I trust your sense of responsibility Liwu. Yet, I cannot help but worry. He is my brother. You are my wife but you should have been his wife. The lines between reality and the past sometimes blur too easily.”
Liwu’s heart softened. She turned and looked into his eyes, seeing the vulnerability beneath his stern exterior–the fear of things changing. The weight of his duties, the shadow of rivalry. She leaned closer, pressing her forehead to his. “Weijun, listen to me. I chose you. I stayed and chose you. He may have charisma but you have steadiness. You can give me a city and access. I would also rather kiss right now than talk about this subject.”
Weijun blinked, startled. “Kiss?”
“Yes,” Liwu said firmly. “Kiss. Because you won’t let me sleep and just want to talk about this pointless subject. So, open your mouth and let me in.”
Weijun pushed her away, laughing softly. “You are impossible.”
“I am practical,” Liwu corrected. “And affectionate. So stop worrying. Weifeng is family, yes. But you are my husband. Besides, I don’t want to be infected with his bad luck. And like I said, I want to kiss,” She said, leaning in to kiss him.
The warmth of her lips silenced his doubts, if only for a moment.
It was a brief kiss, that lasted only for a minute. They lay together, blanket pulled tight, the night wrapping around them. Weijun’s hand traced idle patterns on her arm. His warm breath tickled the hairs on the back of his neck. “I fear the peace we have been having is going to be disturbed. Weifeng is going to march Manman right through the gates of the manor.”
Liwu nodded. “I know. Your brother loves her far more than you ever did. I think you were mostly in it for the competition towards the end but you did not want to admit this to yourself. Especially after she left and you were left wondering who she truly loved. It’s the classic white moonlight move.” She giggled. “I think that is why she went away, so that she could be your unattainable first love.”
Weijun sighed. He wondered if there was any truth to her words. Had Manman deliberately calculated against him?
“I pity your brother.” Liwu added as an afterthought, “That woman has no sincerity in her heart. She also mingles with known criminals. Sooner or later, she will bring doom to herself. If your brother is mixed with her, he might get dragged down too.”
Weijun sighed, pulling her closer. He rested his nose in her hair. It smelled like pink lilacs, like the shampoo in the gift basket he had given her as part of his apology for the whole marriage swap thing.
He was also planning to give her one of nine murder houses in the city that were still standing empty. Or all nine of them at the same time. A grin played on his lips. How would Zhang Caishen compare to him in gift giving?
If it was a battle for Liwu’s affection, he was certain that he would win against everyone.
