Chapter 61: A shared bedroom.
The drive home held the same silence as the drive to the supermarket. When they finally pulled into their driveway, Liwu was all about ready to enter her bedroom and slam the door shut.
But she was forced to stop short when she noticed something odd. Her luggage–stripped suitcases that looked like the hide of a zebra were being moved. It was custom made luggage, twenty one suitcases in total. She would recognize them anywhere.
It was not just her suitcases, there were others which belonged to her husband judging by the way he was he was sputtering.
“What is this?” Weijun frowned.
Butler Chen, who was supervising some kind of moving activity cleared his throat. “Miss, young master, you are both moving to the villa next door. There was a red ant infestation in the part of the house where you have both been living. Everyone else has moved to the wing where your parents live and your brothers have moved to their apartments. Madam Xu suggested that you move to the villa next door.”
Liwu blinked. “Wait, why the villa next door? We already have a house prepared away from the manor grounds.”
Butler Chen replied with a smile, “That house was also infested with red ants.”
Liwu’s eye twitched. “What a coincidence?” she said sarcastically.
“Please follow me,” butler Chen requested.
They did not have much of a choice left, so they followed him. Liwu mumbled something about arresting the red ants and Weijun made gestures to his men, asking why he had not been informed about this earlier.
Meanwhile, through a window upstairs, Madam Xu waited anxiously for the couple to vanish through the small gate that was standing between two hedges. The villa she had prepared was on the other side. It would give the couple privacy while still allowing family members to visit and play nice with Liwu.
“She is gone.” She screamed in joy.
Her maids threw confetti in the air. They would have set off fireworks but Madam Xu did not want Liwu returning to the house out of curiosity. All she wanted was the angel of bad luck out of her house.
If things broke in the villa, that was Weijun’s problem. Most importantly, her jewelry was safe. Zhang Alix had visited earlier in the day to borrow some of Liwu’s shoes and she cried when she did not find the pair she wanted. When she left, it was with a new necklace Madam Xu had just bought to replace the one she had given Liwu!
That was when she made the decision to send Liwu away. None of the girls from that family were good! They were all trouble in different ways.
“Make me some goji berry soup,” Madam Xu ordered the maids.
Shen Deng raised his eyebrows. he stepped back from the window and asked, “Aren’t you celebrating a little too soon? The villa is within walking distance. She can come over everyday for dinner and breakfast.”
Madam Xu froze.
“Do you still want soup?” A maid asked.
Madam Xu shuddered.
In the villa, in the meantime, Liwu was already giving herself a tour. In truth, she was happy to be out of the Shen manor finally. There was nothing better than having your own space, especially if you had bad luck like her.
The villa was elegant, spacious and suspiciously over-decorated with porcelain vases that were begging to be shattered.
Weijun had the same thought and he ordered a maid to get rid of them. The order came just in time because the wind was suddenly picking up speed. It seemed to calm down when they were removed.
“There are four bedrooms left, the left are occupied.” Butler Chen told them.
Liwu and Weijun rushed upstairs as if they were in competition for the best bedroom. In the first one, they found stuffed animals, children’s books and a bed shaped like a race car. Grand aunt Yuening was sitting cross-legged on the floor.
“Grand aunt!” Weijun and Liwu exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”
“I live with you both now, this is my room. No grown ups allowed.”
Liwu looked at Weijun. He shrugged. “I am as lost as you are.” Nobody had told him about the move or the live in 6 year old matriarch that was getting a a taste for dictatorship.
The second bedroom was occupied by Yuening’s books, bags and shoes. There were also candy shelves!
The third bedroom was strange: A lavish suite for Yuening’s pet rabbit! The rabbit sat on a carrot shaped velvet cushion, glaring at Liwu and Weijun like their furry landlord.
This left only one bedroom! The master suite with a single bed.
Liwu crossed her arms. “Not happening. You need to go and talk to your grand aunt.”
Weijun recalled the kneeling incident and he shook his head. His ego was yet to recover. He sighed. “We are married, sharing a bed is not the end of the world.”
Liwu huffed. “I would rather sleep with the bunny.”
Weijun laughed. “Good luck, it bites and it is territorial. That beast has never shared a room with anyone before. Given your bad luck, I doubt the two of you will get along.”
Liwu clenched her hands. After a long day, the last thing she wanted to do was make a fuss about the bedroom. Returning to the Shen manor was out of the question, her mother-in-law had obviously kicked her out. “Fine,” she said, “But if you snore, it will be the end of your world.”
Weijun snorted.
“Dinner is ready.” Butler Chen informed them. “You should eat while everything else is put away. Whatever you cannot find is still in the suitcases.”
Liwu and Weijun walked downstairs. They found Majesty and Reaper in the living room, watching cartoons. Yuening had already eaten. Without the pets or Shen family members, this left just the two of them at the table.
All that awkwardness from before returned.
Liwu tried to cut her stake but the knife slipped, landing the meat across the table and landing squarely on Weijun’s forehead.
“My aim has improved.” Liwu said dryly.
Weijun dabbed at his forehead with a napkin. “I worry for your fellow officers if this is how little control you have over weapons.”
Butler Chen sighed. It seemed like the couple hated each other today even more than yesterday. What had happened?
After dinner, they retreated to the single shared bedroom. The big bed seemed far too small for two people who barely tolerated each other.
Weijun waited for Liwu to take a bath before taking his and when he was finished, he walked by her and flopped onto one side.
Liwu was sitting on the sofa and she stood up.
Before she could say anything, Weijun said, “Let’s just sleep. Tomorrow, we’ll figure this out.”
