Chapter 34: Touching abs.
It was exactly 5:30 when Weijun got home and straight away, he went in search of his wife. He had something very important to discuss with her. When he entered the bedroom, Liwu was just stepping out of the bathroom, a dumpling patterned towel was wrapped over her body, falling just below her knees. Her skin was glowing with lavender oil and little drops of water, her hair was falling to her back, tangled in messy waves.
She looked effortlessly beautiful.
He could not help comparing her to Manman who was always wearing the perfect make-up. Come to think of it, he had never seen her bare face or messy hair. The idea of Liwu being a natural beauty skirted through his mind, in Manman’s voice.
A hair towel fell onto his head, “Stop staring Sweet Rose, unless you want me to drop the towel. However you were about to drool so, I take it that you like what you see.”
Weijun turned around, blushing red with embarrassment. “Who said that I like what I see?” He mumbled. He cleared his throat. “I apologize for budging in like this, I thought you would be watching a movie like you are always doing at around this time.”
In the background, he could hear shuffling of clothes being pulled on. His heart did a pitter patter and his eyes nearly sought the reflection of the wide mirror which would no doubt give him a wonderful view. But he resisted the temptation. It was best to talk about what mattered. “The council held a meeting which was attended by the President of the country virtually. It has been agreed that in order for the Bureau to be allowed into One city, your great grandfather needs to divert the sea and return it to how it used to be.”
Liwu laughed. “Why? This city is thriving without the sea. If it returns, with my bad luck, I will probably end up chasing a suspect into the water and come up with a fish in my mouth.”
Weijun was lost for a moment. The response she gave was out of the bracket. “This is not about you or your bad luck, it is about what One city is owed. The system wars are over and we are willing to open our doors to the SOB. Why should we be denied what nature gave to us?”
Liwu smirked. “Do you know that I once tried to cook a fish and it somehow glued to the pan! When it was finished it was somehow too sweet, too spicy, half cooked and burned at the same time!”
Something flew through the air and landed at Weijun’s feet. He looked down and almost jumped up. It was a white lace bra! The owner was obviously his wife.
He nudged it to the side with his foot and turned around. She was already dressed in a white summer dress, but holding a half broken hair brush, staring at it with frustration. “You don’t need to throw your bras at me, we are not fighting.”
“I am not fighting you.” She flung the hair brush on the bed. “My shitty luck sometimes annoys me. The brush broke and the handle flung the bra at you, not me.”
Weijun arched his brows. Didn’t her family replace curse words with fruit? How come she was using ’shit’ freely? He shook his head, because that did not matter. “Noted. Now the sea, we need it to be returned. It will provide employment and our beaches can become operational again.”
“Let me guess, you called my great grandfather and he refused.” She laughed. “What excuse did he use?”
“He said the sea has feet and we can tell it to return on its own.” Weijun muttered.
Liwu still heard him and she chuckled. “That sounds like him, don’t worry, I will talk to him. But I have a condition of my own.”
Weijun crossed his arms on his chest. He had not been expecting her to make the request without some kind of negotiation. “As long as it is not exaggerated, I will do it.”
Liwu clapped her hands. “The first is simple, I want the offices of the SOB at the beach. I think it would be nice to work near the water and go swimming whenever I please. Two, I want to touch your abs. Your grand aunt Yuening said that many women have praised them. She asked me why grown women like to touch abs and I had no answer.”
Weijun stepped back, looking at her as if she was a pervert. “You….you…how can you ask for such a thing? Where is all that etiquette that your family teaches? As a young woman…”
Liwu rolled her eyes and turned away, looking into the mirror. “My sisters started dating at seventeen, Xixi at sixteen. They had endless offers for marriage from every prominent family you can think of. They were courted by all the young men of good standing. I, on the other hand, was a pariah. If I so much as smiled in the direction of the opposite sex, they pulled out amulets from temples. I once saw the mother of a man I had been set up with on a blind date throwing salt on her son after the five minute date which he left with a nose bleed!”
Weijun guffawed.
Liwu turned around, shooting him a displeased glance.
“Sorry.” He raised a hand, “the image is just funny. Did you give him the bloody nose?”
Liwu folded her hands and sighed. “In my defense, in the first minute, he acted like a jerk by telling me to be so grateful that he was willing to suffer through a date with me. In the second minute, he talked about his family’s wealth. In the third minute, he shouted at a waitress for delaying his wine order and called her a bitch. In the fourth minute, he suggested that we get a hotel room and not waste time. If he liked the experience, he would consider making me his mistress!!”
Weijun gasped.
Liwu shrugged. “I had to punch him. The universe was begging me to do it. That experience made me think twice about an arranged marriage and I figured that being alone was better than being stuck with a jerk forever.”
Weijun sat down on the bed, leaning back on the soft mattress with both hands. “It is not unusual to find hosts whose system require them to be in undefined relationships. I never thought your family was the kind to settle for such an arrangement.”
The corners of Liwu’s lips turned upside down. “We are not. That is why when I told my mother what happened, all of my brothers and uncles descended on him to defend my honor.”
Weijun shook his head. “Why am I not surprised?” he mumbled. He was sure if he so much as made Liwu cry, they would descend on him as well.
