Chapter 95: Another day, another ex.
She actually managed to sleep without a disturbance! When Liwu opened her eyes, it was midday. She blinked against the sunlight that streamed through the curtains. It had been a most wonderful night. No crime scene. No bad luck. Just the muffled sound of her husband and mother-in-law whispering in the hall.
“I told you not to wake her up.” Madame Xu hissed.
“I am not facing Old Tai alone.” Weijun replied.
Liwu laughed. Her husband’s fear of her great great grandfather was adorable. Her mother-in-law’s determination to pamper and protect her was sweet. Until she heard what Madame Xu said next.
“If anyone is waking her up its me because I have booked her today. We are going shopping,” she declared, like this was the cure for fatigue.
As soon as she moved, they both broke into the room, fast and loud like competitors. In the end, Madame Xu won. They were going shopping. In a clever twist, Weijun called Old Tai and claimed that Liwu wanted him to escort her on this shopping trip, pushing back their plan to meet.
“Coward,” his mother whispered.
Weijun shrugged. The old man had asked to meet at the beach. There was no way he was walking into enemy territory naked. Liwu was his armor.
By afternoon, the trio arrived at a grand mall in the city. It was not an ordinary shopping center, it was a place where ordinary and system products were sold. Items that were not approved by the SOB because registration of system hosts in this city was still ongoing.
Until it ended, people could still play fast and loose with the laws.
The detective in Liwu itched to close some of the shops, like a shoe store advertising “speed boots” that guaranteed “+6 Agility.”
“You can easily outrun a normal police officer in those you know.” she muttered. “And those rings which promise charm and charisma buffs!”
Madame Xu wrinkled her nose. “I hate those rings. Last year, I was almost conned out of one million by a con artist wearing one of those. Frankly I don’t approve of this freedom of invention nonsense my son promotes. It is dangerous.”
Liwu slipped her arm through Madame Xu’s, feeling happy because she had met a soulmate. “Even high end brands indulge, that is what makes it worse.”
Her mother-in-law nodded.
“It is like selling umbrellas in a storm. People will buy hope, even if it leaks.” Liwu added.
Weijun, ever the politician, muttered, “If I ban them, half the residents and business people in the city will riot. The Bureau needs to find a solution that balances innovation and illegality. Not everyone that buys speed boots is a criminal, some are kids that wake up late but need to be at school on time.”
“So you are promoting laziness.” his mother said.
Liwu chuckled.
Weijun groaned. “Why am I even trying?” Sometimes, his mother could be unreasonable. If someone pointed to a tree said ’I love this tree, she would point to another and say ’so you hate that one.’
Now that she had Liwu to encourage this madness, it would only grow worse.
Madame Xu was valiantly trying to keep the trip romantic. If she saw nice silk scarves, she would ask Weijun to help Liwu try one on. If she saw nice normal shoes, she would ask Weijun to help Liwu try them on. She even insisted that Weijun carry some of the shopping bags instead of bodyguards. “Like a proper gentleman,” she claimed.
When Liwu tripped, Weijun had to catch her, and with her bad luck, she had tripped five time so far. The fifth was because Madame Xu deliberately bumped into her!
Fate seemed to be enjoying the bad luck game because it struck again.
Near the escalator, they ran into a socialite, Mo Zhen. She just so happened to be another one of Weifeng’s exes. She greeted Weijun with a smile far too wide, and Liwu with a glance too sharp.
“Fenge’r,” she cooed, “I have not seen you in six years!” She tried to hug him but Weijun ducked. Mo Zhen did not let that bother her. “Madame Xu, how nice to see you again.”
Madame Xu’s jaw tightened. She laughed nervously, cursing the decision not to take an elevator.
“You must be Tai Liwu,” Mo Zhen continued on with that big smile. “I have read so much about you that I feel like I know you already.”
Liwu raised an eyebrow. “Don’t believe everything you see on the news. Also, I am not as sweet and nice as my mother wants everyone to believe.”
Mo Zhen laughed and made some jerky movements with her hands. “Look out, birds are about to poop and the earth is about to shake.” She poked Liwu in the shoulder. “Should I keep a distance from you?”
Liwu laughed without opening her mouth and replied, “Well, you have touched me so the curse has been passed on to you.”
Mo Zhen’s smile faltered.
Madame Xu burst into laughter.
Liwu pointed to another shoe store, she had seen some red boots that were made for her feet. Weijun caught up with her and whispered, “I am so sorry about this.”
Liwu rolled her eyes. “You are the gift that keeps on giving Wei. Do they sprout like weeds?” She laughed. “Everywhere I go, another ex pops up.”
Weijun winced. “I…had a social life before you.”
She snorted. Weifeng was the one with a social life. She smirked. “Apparently a very busy one.”
They all thought Mo Zhen would go away but she insisted on following them and showing off a branded bag she had just purchased. “It keeps your items in separate sealed compartments and comes with an AI assistant. When you forget your phone or wallet, it reminds you. No more leaving important things just because you are in a hurry.”
Madame Xu groaned.
Liwu leaned closer to Weijun. “Does it also keep exes organized? Because I would like a list of all your girlfriends from kindergarten right until we got married.”
Weijun groaned, like his mother.
Mo Zhen, oblivious, prattled on about the boutique she was set to open in this very mall. Liwu listened passively as she tried on the boots. Her mind wandered to Xuanji. When he heard about how many exes Weifeng had, would he make a joke about The Ex files?
The thought made her chuckle.
Finally, Madame Xu snapped. “You need to go.” She told Mo Zhen. “Shoo, shoo. shoo..” she waved the woman out of the shoe shop as if she was chasing a chicken. But, she succeeded.
“I am sorry about that,” she said to Liwu. “That girl was always oblivious. Some people just don’t know how to read cues.”
“At least the exes are evenly spaced,” Liwu replied. “I meet one every fortnight, or is it every week?”
They continued through the mall, trying to salvage the day. By evening, they returned home, bags in hand, spirits mixed.
For Weijun, his spirit dipped even more when he saw Old Tai in their living room!
“We meet again, Shen Weijun.” The old man said. Very loudly.
