Chapter 48: Weijun’s quick scheme.
Weijun abandoned observation and left the precinct like a man whose pants were on fire. He barricaded himself inside his car and took a deep breath.
Liwu’s words swam through his mind: organs for rent!
He groaned. “If this story spreads, it will be a horror. Who will want to move to One city if their Landlord requires kidneys instead of cash? If his wife’s bad luck got involved, the scandal would spin into political suicide. His suicide! Many people were looking to take away his position as master of One city.
A new mayor would be voted in within a month of such news spreading. Weijun shook his head. He would not allow this happen. He had worked too hard to get himself and his family were they were.
He picked up his phone. “Cross, get lawyers and start drafting NDAs. This case has taken an ugly turn and it needs to be nipped in the bud. Start paying off witnesses. Contact our friends in the media department. I want this story twisted if it breaks, Anything but organs for rent.”
He ended the call and took a deep breath. If his wife ever discovered what he had done, she would kill him. But, he did not see many options at the moment.
Within twenty minutes, six aides were dispatched to the six buildings that Siyan and Sisi owned. They were armed with bags that held envelopes of cash and iron-clad NDAs.
The first stop was the hospital, where Mr. Yen lay recovering. Two police officers had been left outside his door in case he needed to be protected. So, Mo Xia personally made the trip.
Like a spy, she accessed the hospital from the rooftop, rode the top of an elevator and made her way to the room through the vent. Mr. Yen almost had a heart attack when the woman fell on top of him, startling him out of a foggy sleep.
She swung her legs with agility and landed upright on the floor. Quickly, she smiled. “Mr. Yen, there is no need to panic. The city master has heard of your troubles and he sent me with an apology and some compensation for your inconvenience.”
Mr. Yen blinked. “You mean my missing fingers?”
Mo Xia nodded. “Think of this as a scholarship for your fingers.” She slid the fat envelope on the bed. “Five million in large bills.”
Then, she lid the NDA across the bed tray. “Sign here. You will retract your statement about paying fingers for rent and say you lost them in some sort of machine related accident. In your line of work, accidents like this happen all the time.”
Mr. Yen reached for the envelope. He was greedy for the money but he was afraid of the Bureau. “But I already told them—”
Mo Xia shook her head. “It does not matter what you told them. We will get you a lawyer who will become your spokesperson. All you have to do is make sure the story about fingers for rent dies with you. After that, we will find you a better shop, in a more visible place. It will be rent free for three months, allowing you to get back on your feet. Deal or no deal?”
She held out a pen.
Mr. Yen grabbed it as if it was his lifeline. He scribbled his signature across the paper. The first witness was silenced.
***
Weijun’s people fanned out across the city.
In the first building, they found a woman with two missing toes, a blind man, and a young woman with one kidney. All accepted the envelopes. Two decided to leave the city and relocate elsewhere that very night.
As soon as the pay offs were done, the security footage vanished as well.
In the second building, there was a man who happened to be missing an ear. His wife had recently donated a patch of her skin too!
Similarly, they signed the NDAs.
In building three, a tenant had a missing thumb, another had donated a liver two years ago. They too signed NDAs.
And so it went on with missing teeth, more fingers, a lung, a pancreas, more kidneys. It seemed like this would be the end until Cross learned about the blood donations. He called and informed Weijun immediately.
More aides were sent out with envelopes.
Meanwhile, Liwu was still interrogating Siyan and Sisi. “The two of you seem to think this is a joke. If we look at facts alone, the story writes itself. The package was delivered to you. The address on the package is yours so there was no mistake. The sender is your tenant and he testified that you asked for his fingers as collateral. You are both done.”
Sisi huffed. “Mr. Yen is a desperate man that made a desperate decision. What would we need his fingers for? Do I look like I am missing a few? I am tired of talking, you have kept us here for three hours. Call my lawyer.”
The couple shut down, refusing to communicate completely.
Liwu thought it was time to use bad luck points to force them to confess. But since they had evidence and a witness statement, she was reluctant. Why waste her points on a case that was open and shut? “A confession would make it better for you. But since you would rather not say anything, then have it your way. I will see you both at your trial.”
Liwu and Linlin left the interrogation room.
Chief Abby was waiting for them outside the door with a dark scowl. “I have news and you are not going to like it.”
“What?” Liwu asked.
“Mr. Yen retracted his story. “The chief kicked the wall in anger. “According to him, he was packing some knives that were meant to be props for a movie but he accidentally swapped fake knives for real ones. The knives cut off his fingers. He was already angry with his landlord and the universe at large for his financial situation. So, he sent the fingers to his landlord in a revenge scheme that he had not thought out well.”
Liwu’s face twisted in disbelief. “Chief, you are not buying that crap are you?”
Chief Abby shook his head. “Of course not. But Mr. Yen refuses to speak to us anymore. He has acquired the services of a lawyer and transferred to a private room. The officers we sent to watch him have been sent away.”
Linlin muttered a curse. “Someone got to him.”
The Chief clenched his jaw. “It gets worse. The officers we sent to the six buildings have sent in reports. The residents with missing body parts all have stories to tell about the bizarre accidents they were involved in.”
“Hey Chief, are you seeing this?” Someone shouted.
Everyone turned to look at the television hanging on the wall. A reporter was talking about a series of bizarre household accidents in a couple of buildings thought to be haunted.
Liwu huffed. She had a feeling that someone had just dipped their hand into her case and muddled it. Who else would it be but the shadow that had been following her around?
“System, initiate a moderate misfortune. Target, Shen Weifeng.”
