Chapter 45: The husband, the shadow.
Strong coffee was what Liwu needed in the morning and Majesty made sure that she got it before she even joined the rest of the family for breakfast. The Shen’s were all morning people. As early as 6:00 a.m, all the working adults and children with a school schedule rushed to the table. Reaper and Majesty were also there, despite not needing to be.
Before anyone could move a spook, Weijun cleared his throat.
Liwu groaned, very agitated. She had a sinking feeling that she was about to hear about Manman’s sick mother or sick pet or sick friend. Anything really–just Manman related.
“Liwu, I will be shadowing you on your cases from now on.” Weijun declared.
Liwu blinked, “Excuse me?”
One by one, people found a reason to leave the table and leave only the couple. They could all sense the tension brewing like porridge under a hot flame.
Weijun smiled, picking up a slice of toast and butter knife. “I have already spoken to Chief Abby and your mother. It’s approved. I will be joining you in the field whenever I can. For oversight only. I need to make sure that the Bureau is not here to sabotage us.”
Liwu slammed the vacuum cup down so hard that table rattled and Reaper whimpered. “Oversight? Are you kidding me? I am not a child, I don’t need oversight. You are a vice president of a company, not a detective. And how dare you go above my head?”
Weijun spread jam, unbothered. “You wanted the Bureau here and I allowed it but that does not mean I am going to step aside and give you complete independence. I need to control the narrative so that this city does not go on alarm for no reason. Your mother thinks that it is a great idea. Us, spending more time together.”
Liwu felt a shift in the air. Her bad luck was stirring!
As soon as the feeling came, something popped.
“Just a toaster.” Someone screamed from the kitchen.
The pop was in the kitchen, but the jam Weijun had been smearing on the bread was on Liwu’s face! She wiped it away with a tissue, glaring at him. “See? This is what happens when you are around me. Bad Luck.”
Madam Xu walked through the dining room entrance, smiling like a conspirator. “Well, you two are talking. This is lovely. Finally, some romance in this house.”
Liwu and Weijun turned to her, both maintaining the same icy stare. Where was the romance?
She laughed nervously and hurried out of the dining room, gesturing at the others not to go in. “It is still as cold as the North pole in there. Abort, abort!” Madam Xu stopped the maids that were carrying off candles, flowers and a ’couples retreat’ brochure.
Liwu, meantime, decided that she was not going to have breakfast after all. She stormed out of the house with Reaper and Majesty. Five minutes later, Weijun followed her.
By afternoon, Liwu was fuming in the office and pacing back and forth.
Linlin, raised an eyebrow. “I have ignored this all morning but you are getting on my nerves. Why do you look like you swallowed a lemon?”
As if on cue, Weijun landed in the entrance to their office. “I am told that we have been called to the scene of a crime.”
Linlin’s eyebrows nearly abandoned her face altogether. “We!”
Liwu huffed. “He is following us, like a third partner or something. Can you believe this?”
Linlin grabbed their radios and walked out. Liwu followed her and Weijun did the same. They climbed into an SUV, with Linlin behind the wheel. She kept glancing at Weijun in the back seat, carrying a notebook and thermos.
“So, where are we going?” Weijun asked.
Liwu thought to herself that she would rather bite her tongue than tell him. Sadly, it was not the case for Linlin. She found it all quite interesting.
“Yanlong Garden apartment complex.” Linlin told him.
Weijun’s body became stiff. “Yanlong is a luxurious living area. We reserve most of the apartments there for established business men and women. I hope that this will…”
Liwu groaned. “See, this is why I do not want you following us. A crime has been committed. We don’t care who lives there, we are going to do our jobs.”
Weijun sent the address to his people. They would see to it that the image of Yanlong Gardens was not ruined by the presence of the Bureau.
Linlin, to ease the tension in the car decided to share some information, “There have been reports of screaming, crashing and some kind of vibrations. Neighbors have claimed domestic violence or a duel between two system hosts.”
“If your brother had registered the residents system hosts in the city, we would know if that was truly the case.” Liwu said sarcastically.
Weijun leaned back and closed his eyes. “I will not justify that with a response and I still believe in the right to privacy of system hosts.”
Liwu did not respond and neither did Weijun. The rest of the drive was suffered in silence. This silence held until they reached the apartment where chaos reigned.
A man with a voice amplification system was shouting so loudly that the windows rattled. His wife, armed with a sword and shiny new black eye was swinging it blindly and threatening to kill him.
“YOU NEVER LISTEN!” the man bellowed, his voice shaking the walls.
Neighbors outside held their hands over their ears. Some had cotton plugs inside and others were screaming for the couple to shut up.
“You hit me!” the wife screamed. “What kind of man lays a hand on his wife? Do you think that you are special just because you are a system host? You did not even get a cool system, just one that allows you to raise your voice. You are a loser.” She brought the sword down on a lamp.
The husband bellowed and the vases holding flowers on five balconies near then shattered.
Liwu ducked in time as a piece flew so close to her cheek, nearly grazing it.
“Police.” Weijun bellowed. “Everyone should calm down or you are going to be arrested.”
A lamp was flung in his direction by the husband. Liwu pulled him out of the way in time and unleashed her baton. She marched into the house, tripped over a rug and the baton went flying, straight to the stomach of the husband.
The man slipped on the same rug Liwu had slipped on and he fell on his back.
“Blood.” His wife screamed.
