Chapter 54: Morning slaps.
Naturally, Liwu expected drama in the morning. She had thrown two people off the balcony the previous night, after all.
As soon as she stepped into the dining room for a quick breakfast before heading out on surveillence outside Siyan’s office, the confrontation came.
It started with a a gust of wind and an attempt to slap her.
“You bitch.” Shen Manli screamed.
Liwu pulled her head back, dodging the slap quickly. In the process, she raised her own hand and slapped Manli.
Noise came from the background. Stunned relatives and stunned maids.
People dashed into the room, Weijun inclusive. He was just in time to witness Liwu slapping Manli again and again. Three slaps in a four second gap.
Each slap had been sharp enough to cause someone to wince and Liwu had used so much strength that her palm prints were temporarily embedded in Manli’s pale cheeks.
Liwu pushed Manli away, sending her to the ground with a strong thrust. She dusted her hands off with a smirk, “It is always a good day when I slap an idiot first thing in the morning. I threw you into the swimming pool last night. Next time, it will be straight to the ground.”
She raised her eyes and looked around the room. Two of her sisters-in-law were hiding behind their mother, Madam Xu. The older woman was shielding them and blinking like a robot which was about to explode into a dozen parts.
Shen Biao was also there. Her eyes were spitting fire, her lips had formed a thin tight line and her hands were clenched into fists.
“Do you want a turn?” Liwu asked her, making her fingers dance.
Shen Yuening cleared her throat. Projecting more wisdom than she had, she said, “I think everyone should take a deep breath and go to separate corners before we say or do something we might regret.” Her eyes flicked to Shen Biao and Shen Manli specifically.
Manli sniffled. “Grand aunt, she assaulted me,” she raised her voice, “she assaulted me.” Snot dripped from her nose. “You all saw it. Last night, she attempted to murder me and now she has beaten me. I want to call the police.”
A few heads turned, eyes expressing astonishment.
“Does she know that sister-in-law’s family runs the SOB?” Shen Yulan whispered.
Madam Xu scoffed. She believed that even a child knew better than to expect the police to touch the daughter of the president of the SOB. Moreover, Liwu was a police officer herself. Naturally, her colleagues would side with her, considering the fact that Manli and Biao had broken into her bedroom last night.
There was no evidence that Liwu had thrown those two off her balcony. The only witness was Majesty the cat, who would never testify against Liwu.
Now, if anybody else was the victim of Liwu’s wrath–anyone like her own children or grandchildren, she would step in. But it was Manli and Biao! They were both adults. It was better to let them finish what they started.
Liwu flashed her badge at Manli and cleared her throat. “Good morning ma’am, I am detective Tai Liwu. I was called here about an assault.”
Manli pointed at Liwu, breathing deeply as if she was about to have an asthma attack.
Shen Mingxuan burst into laughter.
Liwu put her badge away and scoffed. Then, she raised her voice and said to everyone, moving her eyes from one member of the Shen family to another. “We have been getting along so well that I decided to relax my security by removing my bodyguards from the bedroom door. I thought we all had an understanding…”
“We do.” Yuening shouted eagerly. “Niece-in-law, Liwu, what these two did is not supported by the family. As the family elder, I can assure you that the matter will be handled seriously. Manli and Biao are banned from the manor for a year unless their presence is deemed necessary.”
“What?” Shen Biao screamed. “You can’t do that. I am a Shen, this is my family’s house.”
Weijun interjected loudly, “Actually aunt, this is my house.”
“So what?” Manli shouted. “You may have built it but the money to start your company came from the family trust.”
Weijun tilted his head. “Mmmm, wrong. It came from a loan that the government gave me. Needless to say, I support grand aunt one hundred percent. There was no need for you to break into my wife’s room.” He looked at Liwu. “While, her actions were over the top, you brought it on yourselves.”
Yuening nodded slowly. “In a family, not everyone will always get along but you two are taking things too far. Since you cannot act like adults, I will step in and make adult decisions. You are banned from the house and any visit must be approved by me.”
Butler Chen and Mo Xia removed the two women from the room. They screamed until their voices faded in the hallway.
The tension in the air seemed to lower a little.
Laughing nervously Madam Xu approached Liwu and took her hand. “Daughter-in-law, don’t be angry. See, we have dealt with the problem. Think good things only, no broken cups, no falling chandeliers, no spilled porridge.” She took off her silver necklace and put around Liwu’s neck.
Her daughters gaped. That was one of their mother’s favorite necklaces. She would not let even them borrow it.
Her husband was in awe of how much his wife was afraid of their daughter-in-law’s bad luck. So afraid that she was willing to part with a necklace that she bought at an auction for fifty five and a half million!
A necklace she always said was so pretty that she wanted to be buried with it.
Liwu nodded. Her bad luck was still on a break, it was her nerves that were on edge.
“I packed your breakfast to go.” Madam Xu told Liwu. She had made such preparations just in case something like this happened this morning.
It was because Shen Manli and Shen Biao had made such a ruckus last night after they were fished out of the swimming pool. Her biggest concern now was sitting at the same table with Liwu when she was in a bad mood. Bad things would happen.
Things like tea or coffee scalding people’s faces. She did not want her face scalded ever again!
A maid brought the bag which had a bento box, a food flask, a bottle of juice and vacuum cup with coffee. A second bag was attached to Majesty’s back.
“Daughter-in-law, today when your shift ends, please buy me some persimmons.” Madam Xu requested politely, gently guiding Liwu to the entrance of the house. She even asked what Liwu would like to eat for dinner.
Liwu left with a smile and Madam Xu realized that she was sweating.
Only after she drove out did everyone finally remember to breathe.
