Chapter 38: A possible case.
After Liwu dragged Xixi out of the living room, the Shen’s and Tai couple remained back. The Tai couple was used to such things happening when Xixi cried, so they had blocked their ears and hidden their faces in pillows just in time to avoid looking at her.
The Shen’s who had fallen victim looked around in wonder, thinking back on all the promises they had made and the things they had pledged.
Shen Deng quickly put on his shirt and buttoned up with shaky fingers, looking around like, Did I just sing and dance like a fool to put a smile on the face of a stranger? Ah! I have never even done that for my children.
The bunny snatched its carrot, the fattest from its stash. It was clearly regretting the momentary generosity. The dogs were feeling the same as they took back the bones and toys they had offered.
“Did I ask her to marry me?” Shen Ruiming stood up, horrified. “Did I….did I really go on my knees and propose? And I handed over the keys to my favorite car!”
Madam Xu stared at her phone, counting the money she had sent to party vendors in payment for flowers and other services. “I ordered for the most expensive chocolates to be put in the bouquets. I have paid two and a half million already!”
Everyone was in awe of what they had given up, and they muttered or shouted it out.
“I booked her a vacation to the moon. Is that even possible?” Shen Yulan screeched. “One ticket costs one hundred million yuan.”
“You were conned.” Mingxuan told her.
The rest of the relatives were gasping because she had spent the most so far, of everyone in the room.
Yulan was patting her chest, with no panic on her face. “I had not yet paid. Thank God sister-in-law dragged her out of the room before I made that mistake.”
The old Tai couple looked at everyone with soft eyes that begged for understanding.
“We are sorry, we should have warned you as soon as we heard the first sniffles.” Old madam Tai said slowly, “Next time you see her cry, run out of the room.”
Old Tai winced, “No running, that will just make her sob louder. Just plug your ears and give her a hug. Make small promises, not grand ones.” He glared at Ruiming, “And definitely don’t propose.”
Ruiming winced. “I can assure you….”
Shen Yuening jumped in, cutting her nephew off before he said something offensive to an elder that could drown them all. “It would be a privilege for Xixi to marry into our family. Our bonds would become even closer. But, Ruiming and her would not be the best match. She needs a husband that can resist those tears.”
Everyone nodded.
Old madam Tai was impressed by the observation powers of the little girl. She was only six years old. How had she come to such a conclusion?
Meanwhile, by the poolside, the birds had not gone away. This was because Xixi was sobbing again, her tears were like weapons ready to fire. Liwu, sat beside her, handing over tissues with the expertise of someone that had survived many crying battles before.
Perhaps it was because of her bad luck, she had always been resistant to Xixi’s tears.
“Xixi,” she said firmly, “you have got to stop crying over a man that sounds like a coward and a loser. The birds are tearing their nests apart for you. I don’t need to be covered in anymore bird poop. Butler Chen is already glaring at us and he is about to call the not fun great grandpa and tell him we are disgracing ourselves.”
The butler was standing at a respectful distance with an umbrella over his head, just in case some of Liwu’s bad luck ended up on his side.
Xixi sniffled, clutching the tissue. “He called me a monster. He made my love sound dirty and twisted. I can’t imagine what he has been telling other people about me outside. How could he twist things like that? In the beginning I cried because I was happy. Later, I cried because he hurt my feelings.”
Liwu sighed, leaning back against the pool chair. “You are not at fault for crying, everyone has the right. It is a natural body response. But you have to admit that your tears are…err…persuasive. You cry and my husband promises to hand you the keys to the city, people hand you car keys and family heirlooms.” She pointed to the jade bracelet Madam Xu had slipped on Xixi’s wrist.
A bracelet that most mothers-in-law saved for their daughters-in-law.
Xixi ripped the bracelet off her wrist and thrust it at Liwu as if it were a hot burning object. “I did not even notice this.” she said softly. “Sorry.”
Liwu sighed. “Stop apologizing, your system chose you just like my bad luck chose me. Mom tried to eject it many times and nothing worked so you are stuck with your nature. Your situation is like hugging a porcupine, it doesn’t meant to hug you but you will end up with quills anyway.
Xixi groaned, burying her face in her hands. “What do I do? Should I break up with him? I mean, he is in love with someone else, I don’t want to trap him with my tears.”
“Fu…fruit him.” Liwu bellowed. “He called you a monster so yes, break up with him. Whether he is scared or a just a coward, he is not worthy of you. Do you want a man that loves you genuinely or a man that stays because your tears tie him down? Don’t forget that you almost married someone else only a week ago. This relationship of yours is messy as fruit.”
“I never intended to go through with the wedding.” Xixi whispered. Then, she raised her tear filled eyes. “Sorry, you were forced to marry because of me.”
Liwu rolled her eyes. “You need to stop apologizing. If you cry now, I will punch you and give you a good reason to cry.”
Xixi was afraid of physical pain and that made her stop immediately. It even earned a weak laugh from her. “I really don’t know why he said those things to his mother.”
Liwu leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Maybe because he wants her to do his dirty work. She will tell everyone how you are manipulating him with tears and they will side with him when they discover that he has been seeing someone else all along. What I don’t understand is why he doesn’t just break up with you over the phone?”
Xixi frowned. “That is so rude.”
“But effective.” Liwu shrugged. “He dumps you and vanishes for a while. It is a much better solution than tarnishing your name because he is scared of tears. There must be something else going on that we are not aware of.” She nodded. Her detective senses were tingling. “Your boyfriend is hiding something and we must investigate what it is.”
Xixi nodded firmly. She had always been a bit of a lamb, always following Liwu down many rabbit holes. This time, it would be no different.
