Chapter 67: Personal curiosity.
Liwu was in no rush to enter the car just yet. She leaned back against it and crossed her feet, acting as if she had all the time in the world.
Weijun did not understand her purpose. “Dear,” he smiled, “You have a suspect, one that makes more sense than this grieving family. I thought you would be eager to pick him up.”
Liwu raised her hand and touched his shoulder. “Sweet Rose, we don’t have proof that Pei Wu did this. Until we do, I must follow where the investigation leads. The father does not seem to have a reason to kill his daughter. But I cannot say the same for the rest of the family.”
Weijun took her hand down. “Drug addict murdered kind hearted heiress’ is a much better headline than ’mother killed her daughter because she was doing too much charity.’”
“You would like that, wouldn’t you?” Liwu asked as she entered the car. “But I am warning you, no meddling. And, don’t you dare leak the name of my suspect to the press in an effort to control the narrative.”
Weijun nodded. “I promise to be good.”
“I saw your shared wife in there,” She tapped the dashboard. “Better be more than good.”
Linlin started the car and drove off. Weijun trembled where he stood. He weighed his options and decided finally that it was time to return to city hall. The burial was the following day, he had spent more than enough time at the Dou mansion.
As their SUV rolled out of the estate, reporters descended on it. They blocked it on every side, shouting questions. Over zealous camera nearly shattered the windows!
“Detective Liwu! Is it true that the heiress was murdered by her own family? Is that why you have been here to question them twice?”
“Is it true that her marriage was a cover up for a hidden pregnancy for the city master Weijun?”
The Bureau SUV had hidden water sprinklers on top of all the windows. Liwu activated them, sending the reporters and camera men scrambling away. She had a smile on her face.
“You are enjoying this way too much.” Linlin giggled.
“Because I hate reporters more than politics.” Liwu replied.
That evening, Liwu and Linlin tracked down Pei Wu’s last known address. The man moved every after two weeks as if he was in some kind of witness protection program. His last known address was a rundown apartment, the kind of place where hope went to die.
Inside, they found shoes with sand and a wall plastered with pictures and newspaper clippings of the wild Yahui, the old party girl.
Linlin whistled. “Obsessed much.”
Liwu walked to a small table and she perused through the papers sitting there. There was a letter firing him from all of the charities that Yahui was supporting. Another was a letter from Yahui’s lawyer, notifying Pei Wu that Yahui would not be supporting him financially anymore. In addition she was terminating all of their relationships, including the god parent one.
She frowned. “Looks like we have found the motive. She was abandoning him in every way.”
“I have found a bloody rock. If this blood matches Yahui’s, we have got him.” Linlin declared.
They left with enough evidence to convict. But Pei Wu was in the wind. By the time Liwu’s shift ended, he was yet to be found.
Once again, her husband picked her from work.
“Another photo op?” she asked.
Weijun shook his head. “No, just doing my husbandly duties.” He said, with a mysterious smile.
Liwu knew he was lying. He was there for the case and in a few minutes, he would shed all traces of pretense. So, she settled into the car and closed her eyes.
Less than thirty seconds later, Weijun poked her in the arm.
She opened her eyes slowly and looked at him reluctantly. “What?”
He averted his eyes and looked to the front. Still, he could not stop himself from asking the question that was burning in the back of his throat. “Is it confirmed that Pei Wu is the murderer?”
Liwu closed her eyes again. She wrapped her arms around her chest. “DNA found the rock proves it was used to smash Yahui. The fingerprints have been matched to Pei Wu. Yahui’s charity created a dangerous dependency that probably led to her murder. Officers are searching for Pei Wu as we speak. Reaper is also on the case. I am sure that he will be in custody tomorrow morning.”
Weijun poked her arm again.
“Stop that!” she slapped his fingers.
He blew on his fingers, looking at her in surprise. “You really have a taste for violence. All I wanted to do was ask if you were sure that leaving the case in the hands of a dog was the best solution. I command all the police forces in the city. One word from me and they will spread out and find this Pei Wu.”
She almost rolled her eyes. “Reaper has a system. His capabilities outrank all those police officers. He is working with Majesty and together, they are entire force. If Pei Wu is in this city, they will find him.”
Weijun decided to let it go for now. He would send out the forces without her knowledge. Nothing could convince him that one dog and cat could find one person that was hiding somewhere unknown in a city with a population as big as this.
He had to admit however, Liwu was really great at her job. Within two days, she had found the murderer and evidence. Given how complicated Yahui’s life was and the lack of evidence on the body, it would have taken any other detective much longer.
A part of him felt proud. He had married a very capable woman!
“We should discuss the bedroom arrangements.” Liwu opened her eyes, turned her head and looked at him. “Have you convinced your grand aunt to have the rabbit moved elsewhere?”
Weijun laughed gently. “That rabbit was officially named Officer Bun yesterday and grand aunt said if I can’t share your bed, I should sleep on the floor. The room is big enough to accommodate the both of us.”
Liwu could not find a response to that. It was a solution that worked. If he was willing to risk being around her bad luck, she would not stop him.
“Are you in love with Manman?” she suddenly blurted.
Weijun looked at her, turning so suddenly that he caused a slight strain in his neck. The question had come out of nowhere. “Why do you ask?”
She was not sure either. In fact, she had no plans to discuss Manman at all before the question escaped her lips. “I don’t know. She just keeps rotating around you the way Pei Wu rotated around Yahui. In the end, one killed the other.”
Weijun wondered what she meant. “Do you think Manman will kill me?”
“That is far fetched,” she pushed her body forward and looked into his eyes. “She will probably try to kill me first before you.” She laughed. “Take this as the rambling of a tired detective. Consider the first question my own personal curiosity. Do you actually love her?”
