Chapter 60: Wiping a stain.
At around 6 p.m, Liwu stretched her arms and clocked out. Like other officers that had worked through the day, she was glad because there was no sudden case needing their attention just before they could leave.
“Where to?” Linlin asked her.
Liwu looked at her watch. “Supermarket, my mother-in-law asked me to buy her persimmons.” She saw the look of disbelief on Linlin’s face and chuckled. “She asked nicely and she gave me a really expensive necklace.”
Linlin had seen the necklace and she had checked the internet for the price. So, she nodded, falling into step with Liwu as they stepped out of the precinct. “If I had mother-in-law giving me necklaces that cost over fifty million, I would not just buy her persimmons. I would buy an entire persimmon orchard.”
Liwu laughed.
Linlin lowered her voice and whispered, “Your husband is here to pick you up.”
He was leaning against an SUV, talking to Mo Xia. From his frown, she was not delivering very good news. Reed was standing three feet away, flirting with a pretty officer, one of the new recruits in the Bureau.
The way she was blushing and playing with her hair told them all they needed to know. She was completely sold!
“If they need spies in the precinct, we know who to start with.” Linlin muttered.
Liwu sighed, and wished her friend a goodnight. Then, with her hands in the pockets of her maroon leather trench coat, she walked towards her husband.
Mo Xia stopped talking and closed the file she had given to Weijun to look at.
Liwu rolled her eyes. “Are you here to meddle in another case?” She asked her husband directly.
He tilted his head to the left, gesturing at the reporters. There was a grimace on his face, like he had pulled a muscle.
Mo Xia moved forward, breaking between the two of them. “Ma’am, you may or may not be aware but Manman visited City hall today. Reporters captured pictures of her and there has been some speculation online. The Bureau is not too pleased with it and they want you both to have a little photo shoot. Nothing complicated, just normal husband and wife things like this.”
Liwu laughed, lifting her shoulders slightly. “I cannot believe this. So he took a shit and I am expected to wipe after him!”
Mo Xia and Weijun flinched.
“Very well,” Liwu said with flourish, “I have to do some shopping in the supermarket. We might as well go together and wipe away the stain your shared wife left.”
While Weijun remained still for a few seconds, pondering the ugly words she had used, Liwu entered the back of the car.
After Weijun joined her, they did not speak. Awkwardness lingered in the air. Mo Xia would occasionally clear her throat like she was encouraging them to say something but silence reigned supreme.
When they reached the supermarket, Liwu walked ahead, leaving Weijun to trail behind her with the shopping cart.
Mo Xia sighed. “You could both try smiling.”
Weijun responded, “Nobody needs six different types of dark soy sauce. It is all dark soy sauce. What is the difference?”
Liwu ignored him, reaching for a box of instant noodles. Her bad luck struck like an unwelcome guest at a party. The entire shelf collapsed like a domino line. Noodles rained down like gravity itself was pulling them.
Workers rushed to take care of the problem while Liwu muttered apologies. Reporters took pictures, capturing evidence of the bad luck they knew followed Liwu around.
Soon, they reached the produce sale aisle and she found the persimmons she was looking for. On a whim, Liwu decided to pick out other fruits, especially the fat oranges that looked delicious.
But when she was about to pick some apples, she froze. Standing next to an apple crate was a woman with glossy dyed gray hair, a smile too wide and the air of familiarity.
“A Wu,” Weijun said, his voice cracking.
Liwu narrowed her eyes. “A Wu?” She turned to her husband, “Your ex-girlfriend.” She smiled sharply, her eyes digging into his.
A Wu sashayed over, her heels clicking almost in sync with the flashing of cameras coming from excited reporters. What was better than a secret meeting between Weifeng and his rumored lover? An open meeting between his wife and one of his ex girlfriends!
“Weifeng! I thought that was you. I am still going around with my gray hair and you are still going around with your blonde hair. We have been broken up for a year but you haven’t changed a bit.”
Weijun lowered his eyes and winced. He wanted to throttle his brother. He had said he dyed the hair on a whim! How could he have left out this important fact? He looked into his wife’s cold eyes and averted his gaze immediately.
He coughed nervously. “Uh, hi.”
Liwu pointed to the grapes. “Does your mother like grapes?”
A Wu ignored Liwu and leaned closer to Weijun. “We should catch up sometime. I know your married but that does not mean you should ditch your friends. We should have dinner…”
“Hey,” Liwu snapped her fingers in front of A Wu’s eyes. It helped that the woman was shorter than her. “Aren’t you being a little too brazen? He is married now, plenty of things have changed.”
A Wu smiled sweetly. “Married men still eat dinner with friends, don’t they?”
Weijun looked like he wanted to crawl into one of the wooden crates and live there. Liwu, however, was moving in a different direction. She grabbed a watermelon and pretended to weigh it. “System, make it explode in her face.”
Less than a second later, the watermelon exploded for no reason at all. It was like the system had been waiting all day to do something bad!
“Ahhh, my face. My hair…” A Wu screamed and ran off.
“But what about dinner?” Liwu called out.
She did not get a response, but she did not need one either. Her goal was already accomplished.
“I am sorry.” Weijun muttered.
Liwu almost laughed. He was known as the play boy of the city. His ex girlfriends could be found on every street corner. Did he plan to apologize for each one of them? “We all have a past,” she replied.
Weijun looked at Mo Xia and gestured his head at the reporters. It was best for this little encounter not to make the news.
But he forgot that people with smart phones worked faster than reporters. One of the cashiers had shared a picture online before the watermelon even exploded!
