Chapter 14: A match made in heaven or hell.
Shen Weijun slept in the chair.
This did not surprise Liwu much. The man had spent the better part of the night watching her like a guard dog. In addition to that, he narrowed his eyes at her suspiciously whenever the slightest sound was made in the room.
It seemed like she was to blame for every wing gust, every chime of the clock, every trip to the bathroom, every sip of water he took. Even when he nearly choked on that water, his eyes blamed her, as if she had made him thirsty and then put the glass of water in his hands.
But he was not the only one that had not slept a wink, she was just the same. On one hand, it was the excitement of awakening the bad luck system and on the other, she did not trust her new husband not to attempt to hurt her in some misguided quest for vengeance.
It was why they both looked a mess in the morning. Dark circles under the eyes, heavy frowns and exhaustion. There was no such glow of newlywedded bliss about them. And this did not please the team of three people chosen by the parties interested in the alliance to oversee them.
One was an old lady named Sister Bai, a famous matchmaker with a matchmaking system. Her assignment to this role had been a questionable one. But she was the one chosen by the ordinary people!
Sister Bai kept looking at the bed and blinking.
Liwu kept trying to block her sight.
Sister Bai was tired of the cat and mouse and she pushed Liwu aside. The determined woman marched over to the bed and waved her hand over it. Her nostrils moved like those of a bunny sniffing for carrots in the distance.
“They did not share a bed.” She declared.
The other two supervisors, a Bureau representative Wu Xian and IH representative Mo Lingling turned to look at the couple. Then, they walked out to relay the information to the higher ups.
“This was an unexpected marriage.” Liwu protested. “Surely, even the interested parties in this union are aware of this. Did you expect us to have an ordinary wedding night like an ordinary couple?” She asked Sister Bai. Then she pointed to Weijun. “He does not like me; I don’t like him. We are not even friends. Everyone should calm down and give us time to at least become cordial and know each other better.”
Sister Bai fanned herself with a red fan that had fierce lion cubs. It was easy to tell from that, that she was a fan of Shen Weijun. “We are not fools, of course we understand. But this marriage is not child’s play. Both of you have to try to get along. This visits from us supervisors will be made once a month and we will interview you separately to see how you are progressing.
It has been agreed by the parties with interest in the alliance that this marriage lasts for at a minimum least three years before either party is allowed to divorce.”
“What?” Weijun and Liwu blurted at the same time.
“That is not what we agreed on prior to this.” Weijun argued.
Liwu nodded. “Yes. How can you just make such a drastic change without consulting the two people involved in the marriage?”
Sister Bai lowered her fan calmly. “Because this marriage is the thread on which the alliance and cease fire is resting. If the thread is pulled, a lot of things will fall apart. You have to understand, the ordinary humans make up seventy percent of the population, and they are tired of the system wars. Think about it, why should a small percentage of the population ruin peace and development for the rest of the world? Normal earth existed before systems fell.”
Liwu folded her hands across her chest. “Does this have to do with OHM?”
OHM was Ordinary Humans Movement, an organization that was united against the heavy influence of system hosts and the disasters they had caused along the way. OHM had started out small, but the system wars had driven up its numbers.
Sister Bai nodded. “The alliance caused a change in OHM. Some of their supporters are willing to stop protests against system hosts as long as the system wars end forever. But one half of the organization led by a woman called Dark Iron is refusing to cease their activities. They are now calling for the elimination of all system hosts…. permanently.”
Liwu and Weijun exchanged a stunned gaze.
“The information reached us last night that Dark Iron’s faction has broken away from OHM.” Tai Alix strode into the room freely. She looked at Shen Weijun. “This is what your brother and some of those IH supporters fail to understand. Our existence as system hosts is not necessarily welcomed by everyone. I was the founder of IH, many years ago. I was also the first person to recognize the danger we would face as system hosts if we did not control our abilities and impulses and lived side by side with the ordinary humans peacefully.”
Weijun snorted. “By stifling us with rules and harsh governance.”
Alix nodded, before sitting down casually in the chair Weijun had slept in. “If there are no rules, every system host with a wealth system will buy and sell companies as they please, causing unemployment at will. They will flood the markets with this and that invention, pushing out ordinary human inventors. They will break marriages, kill world leaders, raise private armies. The list of what our kind can do is long.
Now the system wars have crippled many economies. All the people want to do is rebuild and live like they once used to. We cannot deny them that right. Earth does not belong to system hosts alone. This marriage is like a carefully orchestrated reality tv show and you two are the leads. You must give the people what they want.
This is not about ego’s; it is about our survival. And who knows, maybe this marriage will be a great thing for you both. Sister Bai certainly thinks so.”
Weijun gasped.
Sister Bai said cheerfully, “Ninety nine percent success rate. They are a match made in heaven.”
Liwu and Weijun sneered at each other.
“Bring out the paperwork you came to deliver Tai Alix.” Weijun said strongly. “And don’t bother with anything to do with a honeymoon. There will be none of that. My brother left me a city to run, so I am busy man. I expect my wife to move to One city.” He smirked. “You probably have paperwork for that as well.”
Alix smiled. “Why yes, we do. It is important for us to know where every system host lives.”
Weijun snorted. “So that you can carry out random searches in their homes as you please. Got it.” He strolled to the door and stopped, “We leave in ten minutes, and I am not sharing a car with her. I would like to make it home in one piece.” He left the room and slammed the door.
“More like a match made in hell.” Liwu muttered.
