Chapter 49: You want to meddle, lets meddle.
“Where is he?” Liwu asked.
She had arrived at the Shen manor only a minute ago. The rest of the family had already had dinner and they were scattered. When she did not find her husband in the dining room or courtyard, Liwu went searching for him in his private office.
Cross and Mo Xia were inside, but her husband was not. But Liwu was sure he was there because Majesty had told her so.
“Not here.” Cross replied.
Liwu looked at Majesty.
The cat dashed across the room pushed a button on the desk and some tiles parted to reveal a hiding space. It was big enough for two people.
Weijun climbed out with his head held high. He cleared his throat. “Mmm, I was taking a nap. Who disturbed my peace?”
Liwu walked to him and stopped right in front of him, her eyes sparking like a live electric wire in the wind. “You meddled,” she said flatly.
Weijun raised his eyebrows, feigning innocence. “Meddled? Dear, I don’t even know what this is about. You are going to have to be more clear. Is this about me shadowing you?”
Liwu poked him in the arm with her finger, hard and deliberate. “All day, you were determined to follow me around like a puppy. Then, suddenly, you were gone and witnesses started changing their stories. Six buildings were swept clean within two hours. Did you make then sign NDAs? What did you do? Things like this don’t happen accidentally.”
Weijun smiled, too smooth. “Who says it was me?”
Liwu rolled her eyes. “Really! The evidence speaks for itself and leaking it to the press, that was the cherry on top.”
Weijun groaned. “I was managing the situation. The city doesn’t need headlines about organs for rent. Imagine the panic? It is hard enough for the residents to deal with these new changes being brought in by the Bureau, they don’t need to start thinking the city is cursed and not safe.”
Liwu’s frustration boiled over. “Managing? You are sweeping evidence under the rug. And I hate rugs by the way because I always slip on them.”
He put his hands on her shoulders. “I was not sweeping evidence under the rug. We will find another way to convict the criminals without ruining the image of the city. I was protecting you. Protecting us. If the scandal breaks, your name will come up. First you found the smuggling gang and now severed fingers, people will think your bad luck is tied to it all.”
Liwu slammed him in the chest with her palm. “People already think I am bad luck, this makes no difference. You are not protecting me, you are protecting yourself because this will be blamed on you and your dumb ass brother the stupid city master that did not find out how rotten his city is.”
Weijun grimaced.
For a moment, silence hung heavy. Then Liwu muttered, “You’re just as bad as he is. Both of you look like donkeys in a horse race.”
It wasn’t the harshest insult, but it carried the sting of her frustration. She stormed out before he could reply.
Liwu drove to the hospital her mind racing. It wasn’t like her not to take revenge for slight wrongdoings. Hence, she was paying a trip to her husband’s sweetheart. And maybe, she would see Mr. Yen and convince him to change his mind.
It was easy to find Manman, all she had to do was flash her badge. She entered the private VIP room, the sterile smell of disinfectant and a rose perfume filling her nose. In the bed lay a middle aged woman, healthy and alert.
“Who are you?” she asked sharply.
Liwu walked closer, allowing the light to wash over her face.
The woman in the bed gasped.
“Madam,” Liwu said softly, “I am Tai Liwu. Your daughter called my husband claiming that you were so sick and the doctors could not discover what was wrong with you. I came to check on you. How are you feeling?”
The woman gulped.
Before anything else could be said, the door burst open. Weijun rushed in, face pale. Manman was right on his heels and she rushed to the bed.
“Mother!” she exclaimed, hurrying to check for any bruises.
Liwu rolled her eyes. “Miss Manman, you are acting as if I am sort of monster. I am just a visitor that came to check on the well being of your mother, considering the fact that you called my husband in hysterics and begged for help.”
Manman looked at Weijun, her eyes red and aggrieved. “I am sorry Weijun, I did not mean to cause any misunderstanding between you and your wife.” She looked at Liwu. “I did not mean to call him away last night, I was just scared because my mother fainted.”
Liwu arched her brows. She had not realized that the call had been placed at night or that her husband had actually taken a trip to the hospital.
What she did not know was that Mo Xian had taken care of the paparazzo that captured a pictured of Weijun entering and leaving the hospital.
The story had been killed before getting a chance to bud.
Liwu laughed. “Well, what can I say? Our Wei is a generous man. He likes taking care of all the residents of his city so I would not be surprised of he visited you as part of his charity tour. Besides, you are a friend of the family and now that I am family, it makes me your friend as well.”
Manman grimaced. It was not the words Liwu said but how she said them. They had this way of making her feel small. Insignificant. Less.
And she abhorred it.
Liwu settled in a chair and crossed her legs. With a smile, she said, “My dear Sweet Rose has been following me around all day, meddling sweetly in my business. Touching places and things he should not touch.” She winked at Weijun and blew him a kiss. “So, I am here to meddle as well.”
The door slid open. A group of doctors walked in, twenty of them. They acknowledged Liwu by bowing politely.
She gestured to the bed. “That is the patient. She is very sick and the doctors here cannot find what the problem is. You are all doctors that are at the top of your fields. I want you to conduct every test known to mankind and pinpoint the cause of her illness. All expenses will be on my husband.”
Manman turned pale.
Her mother turned pale.
Weijun turned paler. His wife was like a tiger and he had stepped on her tail.
