Chapter 62: The death of an heiress.
As soon as she covered herself, the bed creaked. Then, with a loud crack, one leg snapped. Liwu rolled off, landing on the soft red rug. A pillow fell on her face.
[+100 points: Falling off the bed.]
She groaned. “Perfect, just perfect.”
Three more legs snapped and the bed sat evenly on the floor. Weijun, had jumped off when the first leg snapped. He was standing in place, staring at Liwu sprawled on the floor.
She tossed the pillow back on the bed and got back in bed as if nothing had happened. “You said we would figure things out tomorrow, this is one of them.”
Weijun pinched the bridge of his nose. “This marriage is going to kill me.” he muttered.
None the less, he pulled the covers back and went back to sleep. The bed would be changed tomorrow. And so, they lay in bed, facing opposite sides. Tension claimed them before sleep did.
Liwu wondered how she had come to a share a bedroom with her husband. Was the red ant infestation related to the one that stopped Haocun from disrupting the subways of One city? Was it possible that Madam Xu was Haocun’s nemesis?
The idea seemed so far fetched that it made her chuckle. Madam Xu was not a secret agent assigned by an known agency to counter Haocun’s system. She was not running around in tights, saving Monday’s!
Still, she pictured it all, planting the woman at the scene of Haocun’s world domination attempt. It went on until she fell asleep.
In the morning, Weijun was the first to wake up, shower and leave. By the time Liwu made it downstairs, he was gone. There was no opportunity for them to have the talk about the bedroom matters.
There was also no time for breakfast, Chief Abby summoned her to the precinct before she could have her first sip of coffee for the day.
When she made it to the precinct, it was busy. On the beach, system registrations were still on going.
Inside, officers were catching up on cases that were still under investigation, launching new ones or marching arrested criminals to holding cells.
Liwu walked upstairs to the second floor and knocked on the Chief’s door, despite finding it open. “You wanted to see me Chief?”
She poked her head inside. The Chief was just ending a call with someone that ranked higher than he did. Whatever they had said to him did not leave a smile on his face.
“Come in.” he said, in a short growl. “Stupid hierarchy.” he muttered. “I need you to work the Dou Yahui case.”
Liwu strolled into the office, frowning deeply. “I have not been notified about such a case. And by Dou Yahui, do you mean the black sheep, party girl and most hated heiress of the Dou family?”
Chief Abby nodded. “One and the same, she is dead. Try not to say those words around any reporter. Don’t make me send you to another sensitivity training class.”
Liwu shook her head. “I am not taking it.” She had a rule: never accept cases that smelled of politics. The chief knew this because she made it clear. People had a way of dragging her family into the case.
Chief Abby shrugged. “It is out of my hands. Your husband went over my head, straight to your mother. He requested for you because your team has one of the highest clearance rates in the Bureau.”
Liwu scoffed. “Damn Weifeng, meddling in my work again.” What had happened to those rules about not meddling in each other’s work? “System, send him another misfortune, a minor one.”
Chief Abby gestured to the television on the wall in front of his desk. “The Dou family is one of the wealthiest in One city and they are close friends with Shen Weijun. They must have called him and he called his brother who reached out to your mother. You have no choice Liwu. The story has already leaked to the press and you have been named as the detective in charge. The body was found in the sea so get your ass to the crime scene right now.”
Liwu left the office, feet pounding against the floor as if it had personally insulted her. She changed into her uniform because at some point, she would have to talk to the press. After, she got into a car and drove herself to the crime scene.
On the way there, she thought about Dou Yahui. Once upon a time, she had gone around the world squandering the family fortune. Many times, she had been arrested for one crime or the other, most drug related. There was that time when she set her ex boyfriend’s apartment on fire. Her life had been a mess until she nearly died in a car accident.
She was in a coma for one month! When she opened her eyes, she was like a whole new woman. She found God, cleaned up her act, turned into a charity darling. She even found herself a fiance who adored her. Their wedding was just a week away.
How had she ended up in the sea? How was her great great grandfather Old Tai handling it? He hated it when people dumped bodies in water.
Liwu arrived at the crime scene with questions. She hoped that Linlin had done most of the heavy lifting. Linlin was talking to a crime scene tech, her hands on her hips. Her sunglasses sat on top of her head, but they face backwards instead of forward.
“Tell me that it was a suicide.” She said as she stopped next to Linlin.
Linlin shook her head. “No such luck. The coroner says that it looks like she was bashed in the head and dumped in the water somewhere. We don’t even know exactly where for now. She was not a system host, I don’t know why we are working her case. The regular cops are not too pleased either.”
Liwu sighed. “Blame it on my husband. He has ties to the Dou family and he shoved the case our way.”
The crime scene was grim and too packed with many people. Police, reporters, on lookers, news drones and helicopters circling the air! Dou Yahui’s body had been pulled from the water, her hair was tangled like a seaweed. She had been stripped naked or her clothes had been lost in the water.
Liwu grimaced. “Please tell me it is not sexual assault. Is that why the press is circling like vultures?” If it was the case, her husband was going to be all over her and the case. She could already hear his voice in her head: Solve this quickly, don’t ruin the image of my city. I just want to reassure my residents that the city is safe!
