Chapter 119: Weifeng’s alone.
The baby burst into a startled loud cry. Shen Lianhua rushed towards the window, glaring at Manman and Liwu. But Liwu did not even notice because all of her attention was on her milk tea. She had rescued it, and now, she could enjoy it.
“Well,” she said, voice cool, “this is…unexpected.”
Weijun coughed, nearly tipping over the cup of tea he had refused to surrender as well. “Miss Manman, we weren’t expecting –uh–guests.”
Manman smiled, serene as moonlight itself. “I heard that Feng was back and he was sick. He told me that I could drop by any anytime so I thought it was okay to check in today.” She lifted the basket of fruits she had brought.
Weifeng practically bounced out of his chair, forgetting his injuries for a moment. If Shen Mingxuan and Kaiwen had not held him back, he would have fallen to the ground. He grabbed his clutch and limped towards her. “Manman! You are here! I thought you would be too busy to make it. This is perfect timing, we are having breakfast. Why don’t you join us?” His grin was so wide, it threatened to split his face.
Majesty leapt onto the table, tail flicking. “Ah, the shared wife of the Shen brothers is back. The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. Two brothers, and their infamous white moonlight.”
Weijun and all the Shen brothers glared unappreciatively at the cat. Then, they remembered who had called Manman their shared wife, so they turned to look at Liwu. With the exception of Weifeng who only looked at Manman as if she was the sun.
“Liwu, I hope that you don’t mind.” Manman said softly, walking closer to the table. “I am not here to cause trouble, I just want to check on Weifeng.”
Liwu leaned back, arms crossed. “Interesting that you would mention me of all the people here. But let me be clear: this is my home now. My husband’s home. It is my in-laws home. Guests are welcome but only if they don’t cause trouble. Your problem is that every time I see you, you are causing trouble.”
She had no plans to make a fuss, raise her voice or make threats. It would only make her seem jealous, petty and unreasonable. Manman had clearly said that she was there for Weifeng, not Weijun.
This was the Shen manor, not Tai or Zhang mansion. Her authority was not as high Yuening’s or Madam Xu. Moreover, the Shen’s had likely discussed this scenario already. Why else weren’t they throwing Manman out immediately?
They were tolerating her for Weifeng’s sake.
Manman’s smile didn’t falter. “I apologize and understand what you mean. I meant no offense before and I won’t cause trouble.”
Madam Xu cleared her throat. “If everyone is okay with it, we should resume breakfast. I ordered for some pastries and fresh tea.”
Somehow, as if everything was normal, everyone gathered at the table. Manman sat next to Weifeng who was oblivious to the storm brewing. “How have you been? Where have you been? Weijun and I searched for you for so long. We looked everywhere you said you wanted to go.”
Liwu’s eyebrow twitched. Weijun’s hand tightened around his cup.
Manman smiled gently. She looked from one brother to another, “I told you both that I would be back. You both have no patience.”
Liwu’s gaze sharpened further.
“Forget the tea.” Madam Xu bellowed, “How about smoothies? Or maybe ice cream.”
Weijun’s thoughts were a mess. I have no desire to be in the middle of the conversation between you two. Why are you bringing me up? I don’t want to end up with a cow attempting to sit on me. Why is Manman smiling at me? Why couldn’t Weifeng invite her out? This is why I wanted him to go to a hospital.
He forced a smile. “Manman, Weifeng has an appointment at the hospital. Maybe you two should go together right now.”
“I will drive you.” Shen Deng volunteered, standing up immediately.
Weifeng shook his head. “I am okay, besides there are two hours until my appointment.”
Liwu’s smart watch sounded an alert. “Great,” she muttered and rose. She smiled at her in-laws, “There has been a possible murder. Thank God.”
Around the table, people’s jaws dropped.
Liwu laughed faintly, “I mean, how sad. It is such a terrible thing, so terrible that I have to go and solve it right now.” She whistled and Majesty leaped off the table. Reaper barked once and leaped from a chair.
Weijun also got to his feet. “And I am off to help her solve it.”
Madam Xu stood up. “I will walk you both out.”
One by one, with an excuse that was real or fake, the Shen’s scattered, leaving Weifeng and Manman at the table. But the servants and Mo Xia did not go anywhere. They stayed back, hiding and pretending to be invisible in order to eavesdrop.
Manman instantly burst into tears, crying so sorrowfully like her heart had just been broken. “Feng, your family hates me now. I swear, I didn’t do anything at all, it’s just Tai Liwu. She told aunt Xu to throw me out the last time I was here.”
Weifeng was taken aback. “What do you mean by that? How could my mother throw you out?”
Manman sniffled. “But she did, and she told me not to return without an invitation. But I don’t blame her, she was not given a choice. Tai Liwu threatened her. She even counted from 59 downwards.
I don’t know why she does not like me, she said some things to Weijun to make him hate me. We used to be close, the three of us, and now, he does not want to come near me. He banned me from visiting city hall.”
Weifeng pulled her into his arms, hugging her gently. While he felt pity for her suffering, he was also glad deep down, to hear that his brother had pushed her away. This meant no more competition.
Finally, she could be his alone.
