Chapter 53: Dine, dash and dive!
Chapter 53: Dine, dash and dive!
Thirty minutes in and nothing had happened so far. Liwu’s infamous bad luck was strangely calm. No spilled drinks, no broken chairs, no sudden wind. Even the lanterns were on their best behavior.
The grilled snapper was hot and delicious. The cocktail umbrellas remained upright.
Only Weijun was unsettled. As he ate, he looked around suspiciously, waiting for something ominous to happen. Towards the end of the meal, he finally blurted it out.
“Where is your bad luck?”
Liwu sipped her cocktail. “On a break. Lately, it picks and chooses its moments. Maybe it knew how hungry or I was or the long day I have had so it decided to give me a night off.”
Weijun shook his head. “That can’t be it.”
Liwu shrugged. “Well I don’t want to talk about bad luck. In fact, I don’t want to talk about anything at all. I am too relaxed and too satisfied.”
As if those words summoned trouble, a teenager in flip-flops gulped down a cocktail, wiped his mouth with a napkin and bolted for the beach.
“Hey, you haven’t paid.” The teenage waitress screamed.
Weijun looked at Liwu. “Someone is dining and dashing.
Liwu calmly sipped her drink, eyes half closed. “I am off duty, that is not my problem,” she said, swirling a straw.
Weijun’s jaw dropped. “What are you talking about? You are a police officer, of course it is your problem!”
“Off duty,” Liwu replied, popping a pineapple chunk into her mouth. “I will pay for whatever the kid ate.”
Weijun leapt up, fueled by the spirit of justice and righteous indignation. “Nobody dines and dashes in my city. I will take care of it.” He charged after the teenager, weaving through tables, dodging a tray of flaming Pineapple Flambe.
“Oh, its the brother of the city master, the young master Weifeng.” Someone shouted.
Guests cheered Weijun on as if it were a sporting event.
Liwu prepared to devour the pineapple flambe!
The chase was on the beach and the teenager zigzagged like a sand crab. He was young and energetic, Weijun was older and he was puffing, leather shoes sinking into the sand. “Hey kid, stop!” he bellowed.
His voice echoed across the water.
The boy darted toward the water and Weijun followed, forgetting that he could not part waves on command like Old Tai. With one heroic leap, he landed not on the culprit but a bed of sea weed Old Tai had gathered in the morning.
Liwu laughed and raised her spoon. “He was looking for bad luck and it found him.”
Weijun emerged from the sea, dripping and sputtering, holding his phone up. The boy was long gone, but the crowd was entertained and they applauded.
Liwu waved sweetly from her table. “Nice try Sweet Rose. I will order for something sweet and hot to help you cool off.”
Weijun’s men groaned and some laughed.
He trudged back to the restaurant, seaweed clinging to his shirt, muttering, “Never again.” And, he was considering filing a report against his wife. Since when did police officers get time off?
Wasn’t it their duty to stop all crimes in progress at all times?
Liwu did not get to finish her dessert. Weijun was in a terrible mood and the wet clothes did not help. He grabbed her hand, dragged her back to the car and they went straight home.
Before she could even take her shoes off, she was confronted by Majesty. “You ate sea food without me?”
She rolled her eyes and answered a call from her mother. “Hey mom.”
“Liwu, my dear, how was dinner with your husband?” Alix asked.
Liwu rolled her eyes again. “Are you spying on me?”
“Everyone assumes I am spying on your husband and his family. It would be a shame if I did not prove them right.” Alix chuckled.
“Dinner was fine.” She replied. “And before you complain about my conduct as a police officer for not chasing a teenage boy into the sea…”
“Sweetie I don’t care.” Her mother said. “You would just cover the bill anyway and arrest the boy the next day. Besides, dining and dash is not a case for the SOB. Not unless a system host is involved.”
Liwu yawned. “Mom, I am really tired. I need to bathe and sleep.”
“So, you are still sleeping alone.” Alix said flatly.
Liwu groaned. “Mom, do we have to talk about this now?”
“Some other day then.” Alix chuckled. “Goodnight Liwu. I made an appointment for you with the plastic surgeon. They will take care of that scar tomorrow.”
Liwu touched her chest. “Thank you. Tell dad I love him.” She hung up quickly because she knew there was more her mother would say on the rest of the small scars on her body.
For her, they were like badges of honor. Until the criminals that gave her each scar were tried and sentenced, she would not remove them.
She looked at her right wrist. At the old pink beaded bracelet with the name Xiaxia. It was not a scar, but it hurt worse than any wound or scar.
Majesty looked at the bracelet and sighed. The bracelet was a remnant of a cold case that Liwu carried on her shoulders wherever she went. “You…”
The bedroom door was kicked open, two women walked in. Shen Biao’s face was not new to Liwu and the other woman was a stranger. But, Liwu had seen her face in the albums Yuening showed her.
It was Shen Manli!
As Yuening described her, arrogance was her strongest facial feature. She had a titled chin, sleek hair pulled back in a knot and sunglasses. Her heels were loud as she barged into the room without an invitation.
“This is the little lizard.” Shen Biao said.
Shen Manli smirked. “So, you are the little bitch from the Zhang family that he married.” She drawled and laughed condescendingly. “You are not much to look at. If your mother was not the president of the Bureau, you would not be worthy of licking my shoes.”
Liwu raised an eyebrow.
She walked towards the two women, smiling as if nothing bothered her. Out of the blue, she grabbed Shen Biao’s hair tightly with one hand and Shen Manli’s with the other. Her grip was so strong that it almost felt as if she was trying to pull the hair from the skull.
“What are you doing?” Manli screamed.
“Little lizard, let go.” Shen Biao struggled.
From below, Majesty poked the women’s calves with his claws.
Without responding to their screams, Liwu walked them to the balcony and threw them over!

Liwu closed the door as her system updated her points.
Majesty looked on in shock.
