Chapter 127: "Waiting for His Message?
Chapter 127: Chapter 127: “Waiting for His Message?
When Lynn Jennings and Serena Lynch saw Victor Morgan’s expression darken, both felt their hearts tighten. Unfortunately, the instigator of it all was completely oblivious to the look on the man whose arm was still around her shoulder.
Victor Morgan had been so close to her just now, which, in a way, made things convenient for her.
The convenience of a slap.
“Who the hell do you think you are!” After slapping him, Jessie Sterling still didn’t seem satisfied. She shoved Victor’s shoulder and unsteadily stumbled out of his embrace. Her cheeks were flushed, but her eyes blazed with accusation. Pointing at Victor, she launched into a tirade. “I told you not to come find me, but you insisted. You deserved that slap. Who told you to be unfaithful? Get out!”
After saying this, Jessie Sterling gave Victor Morgan’s shoulder another forceful shove.
Standing behind them, Lynn Jennings had to stop herself from applauding Jessie.
To be able to slap someone and still act so utterly justified—she was truly worthy of being Lynn Jennings’s friend.
However, admiration was one thing; the need to save her own skin was far more pressing.
Lynn Jennings had no desire to get “silenced” for knowing too much during this trip to Aethelburg. So, she quickly and quietly slipped away from the doorway, leaving the space to the young couple by the door.
Victor Morgan didn’t notice Lynn Jennings leaving. His eyes were fixed solely on Jessie Sterling. Taking a deep breath, he tried his best to ignore the stinging on his cheek and keep his voice level. “You’re drunk,” he said, though his voice still carried an undercurrent of cold displeasure.
Jessie Sterling immediately shouted back, “I am not!”
“Come home with me,” Victor Morgan said.
Jessie retorted, “No! I’m not drunk, and I’m not going with you. Go find Nina Walsh yourself!”
With that, Jessie Sterling took a sharp step back, and before Victor Morgan could even react—SLAM!—she shut the door, leaving him locked outside.
She didn’t see how Victor Morgan’s face had instantly darkened the moment she told him to “go find Nina Walsh.”
Having rejected Victor Morgan, Jessie Sterling staggered back to the bed and, with a THUMP, threw herself onto the large mattress.
Having witnessed the entire scene, Lynn Jennings and Serena Lynch exchanged a look, momentarily at a loss for words.
“Is she going to black out?” Serena Lynch asked.
Lynn Jennings thought for a moment, recalling Jessie’s usual tolerance. “If we remind her tomorrow morning, she should be able to remember it.”
There was no trace of humor on Serena Lynch’s face. She let out a sudden sigh. “Jessie actually slapped Victor.”
She’d never seen anyone dare to lay a hand on Victor Morgan before.
And at that moment, even though she wasn’t standing very close to the door, she could still feel the deep, simmering rage coming off him after Jessie’s slap landed.
Serena Lynch was afraid that Jessie would wake up the next morning filled with regret.
Jessie Sterling felt no regret.
Perhaps because she had gone a little wild the night before, she didn’t wake up until almost noon the next day.
Serena Lynch had gone back to her own room last night, so now only Jessie and Lynn Jennings remained in the cabin.
Lynn Jennings was in the bedroom as well. Seeing Jessie awake, she said, “There’s hot water on the nightstand. Should I order lunch now? What do you want to eat?”
Jessie Sterling sat up, rubbing her head in a daze. “Didn’t I only have two beers last night? How did I get this drunk?”
It was only then that Lynn Jennings remembered Jessie had also grabbed a can of whiskey. Mixing drinks was a surefire way to get drunk.
After explaining this, Lynn sat down on the sofa by the window. “Do you remember what you did last night?”
“Huh?” Jessie, who had already gotten up to freshen up, turned around with her electric toothbrush in her mouth. “What did I do this time?”
“Victor Morgan came over last night.”
“Oh…” Jessie Sterling mused for a moment, her voice muffled. “Lynn stopped him!” With that, she couldn’t help but smile as she spat out the foam from her mouth and gave Lynn Jennings a thumbs-up.
She just knew Lynn Jennings would be on her side.
“And then you slapped him,” Lynn Jennings said, shaking her head. “That part wasn’t on me. I’m not the one who stopped him.”
Jessie Sterling looked as if she hadn’t heard right. “Me?” Her eyes went wide. “I slapped Victor Morgan?”
Lynn Jennings nodded.
Jessie Sterling: “…”
“Do you regret it?” Lynn Jennings asked.
Jessie Sterling: “…”
Room service had already delivered their food, and Lynn Jennings was beginning to think Jessie wouldn’t answer her question when Jessie finally spoke up.
“What is there to regret?” Jessie Sterling said while dabbing on eye cream and using a massage wand around her eyes. “He’s the one who made me angry. Am I supposed to apologize to him?”
Lynn Jennings hummed. “What if he feels humiliated?”
Any man who gets slapped by a woman is bound to feel some type of way about it.
Besides, Jessie had moved so decisively last night that neither Lynn nor Serena Lynch had even had time to react.
Upon hearing that, Jessie Sterling opened her eyes. She looked in the mirror at Lynn Jennings, who was unpacking the food containers behind her. “But when he humiliated me, didn’t you and all his friends see it?”
After saying this, Jessie Sterling stood up. “Is my pride less important than his? Even if he’s humiliated, now we’re even.”
Lynn Jennings was convinced by Jessie’s logic. Truth be told, even if Jessie hadn’t said a word, Lynn wouldn’t have thought there was anything wrong with the slap last night.
Human nature is all about double standards, after all.
The two of them went upstairs to eat. After a full night of heavy snowfall, the world outside had transformed into a true winter wonderland.
The snow in the yard was so deep that a single step would sink you in up to your calves.
In the second-floor living room, near the window, sat a small open-flame stove, part of a trendy setup for brewing tea.
Jessie Sterling and Lynn Jennings commandeered the tea-brewing station and started grilling meat on it, placing a couple of oranges beside the heat as well. Soon, the sweet and fruity fragrance of roasting orange peels filled the entire room.
A very fresh, fruity aroma.
Before starting her meal, Jessie Sterling checked her phone. Victor Morgan hadn’t contacted her.
“…This morning, before you woke up, Luna called me,” Lynn Jennings said. “She said they’re planning to go ice skating. If you want to go, we can head out in a bit.”
The “ice skating” at The Caldera Resort took place on a lake—not a hot spring—that froze over in the winter, creating a natural rink you could glide across.
“Oh.” Jessie Sterling seemed uninterested.
Lynn Jennings noticed her glancing at her phone from time to time. She raised an eyebrow. “Waiting for a message from him?”
Even without Lynn saying his name, Jessie knew exactly who she meant.
