Chapter 171: Chapter 171: Romance
Jessie Sterling beamed at the man across from her. “Happy with the taste?”
“Mhm,” Victor Morgan nodded.
It was hard for a man with his personality to string together a long series of compliments.
Jessie’s eyes held a hint of pride. “I made it!”
When Victor Morgan heard this, a flash of astonishment crossed his eyes.
Then, he couldn’t stop a smile from slowly spreading across his face.
It was a genuine smile, impossible to hide in the slightest.
The next moment, Victor Morgan reached out and took Jessie Sterling’s hands from the table.
Jessie was startled by his action and tried to pull her hands back. “What are you doing?”
But Victor Morgan held her by the wrists, not letting her break free.
“What made you decide to cook? Let me see if you got hurt,” Victor Morgan said.
They’d been married for quite some time, and he’d never once seen Jessie Sterling in the kitchen.
He found it hard to believe that a novice could go into the kitchen and not get hurt at all.
As Victor Morgan considered this, the smile on his face faded, replaced by a slight frown.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. It’s not like I don’t know how to cook,” Jessie said, a hint of smugness in her voice.
Victor Morgan didn’t entirely believe her. He only relaxed after inspecting her hands himself.
After releasing Jessie’s hands, Victor Morgan looked up. “So why the sudden urge to cook?”
They had a housekeeper at home, and even if they didn’t, he could cook. There was absolutely no need for Jessie to do such things.
“I just felt like it!” Jessie leaned back in her chair. “You get so caught up in work you forget to eat. How about now? Is the food good?”
’Of course, Jessie didn’t say it was to repay the favor of Victor Morgan accompanying her to the fashion show. This wasn’t a transaction; saying it out loud would spoil the gesture, wouldn’t it?’
Sure enough, after hearing her explanation, the look in Victor Morgan’s eyes deepened considerably.
“You made this especially for me?” Victor Morgan asked.
Jessie nodded. “Yep. It’s your fault for forgetting to eat.”
The smile on Victor Morgan’s lips deepened. He didn’t bother asking the obvious question of whether she was worried about him. Instead, he took direct action, standing up and sweeping Jessie right out of her chair.
He was ecstatic!
Previously, Jessie had always seemed to be wearing a mask around him. He had no proof, but the feeling was undeniable.
But now…
Victor Morgan didn’t want to overthink it. He lowered his head and kissed Jessie right on the lips.
’The rest of the work could wait until tomorrow. Work was a never-ending task, but there were certain things he would regret if he didn’t do them right now.’
Victor Morgan carried Jessie straight into the bathroom.
The plane’s cabin was, of course, nothing like their home. The bedroom wasn’t very large, and the shower was naturally also very small.
But it seemed that for certain activities, such a confined space only made things more convenient.
Jessie hadn’t expected him to have such a strong reaction just because she’d made him a meal.
There weren’t many crew members on the private jet, but it wasn’t empty either. Unsure if the soundproofing was as good as at home, she could only bite her lip hard, holding back, not daring to make a sound.
But she didn’t know that the more she acted this way, the more it incited the man before her to tease her.
“They can’t hear…”
Victor Morgan suddenly leaned close to Jessie’s ear and whispered.
In that moment, his voice seemed to mingle with the sound of the water cascading from the showerhead, flowing together into Jessie’s ears.
And then, Jessie heard her own voice.
Jessie didn’t know how that night had ended. When she next awoke and opened her eyes, she saw a grand, French-style chandelier hanging overhead.
She was no longer on the plane.
A blush crept onto Jessie’s face.
’She didn’t need to think twice to know Victor must have carried her out of the cabin.’
’She just wondered if anyone had seen them.’
Turning her head, Jessie saw a glass of water on the headboard with a note tucked beneath it.
As she sat up in bed, she couldn’t help but wince.
’The aches all over her body were impossible to ignore. Victor had been particularly excited yesterday. Though you couldn’t tell from his expression, his actions had been far more uninhibited than before. In the bathroom, he had kept her wrapped around his waist almost the entire time.’
’When they later returned to the bed, he had still held her close.’
Jessie didn’t want to dwell on what she’d gone through yesterday. She took a sip of water to soothe her throat before picking up the note.
On it was a line of flamboyant script, written in black ink with a fountain pen. The strokes were sharp and austere, yet held a certain graceful flair.
“Went to work. I’ll take you out for dinner tonight.”
Jessie pouted. She picked up her phone and saw that it was exactly noon. She had no idea how long she had slept.
’Thinking about it, Jessie couldn’t help but marvel. Where on earth did Victor Morgan get so much energy? After a night like that, he didn’t even have to deal with jet lag. He just changed into a suit and threw himself into work.’
’She, for one, could never do that.’
Jessie had never been to this manor before, but Victor had already told her about the estate before their arrival.
Because the estate was located within the city, it wasn’t enormous. June and July were the peak season for the lavender to bloom.
Sitting by the window, Jessie could see the garden full of purple lavender at a glance. Lifting her gaze a little, she could see the Sereine River in the distance.
White lace curtains billowed in the gentle breeze from outside. Jessie sat not far away, leisurely eating a seafood paella that was either breakfast or lunch, she wasn’t sure which. A glass of freshly squeezed juice rested by her hand.
Simply admiring the scenery outside the window felt peaceful and wonderful.
Jessie watched for a while before her phone chimed twice.
It was a message from Victor Morgan.
Victor had messaged her over an hour ago to ask if she was up. This new message was to let her know he was nearly finished with his work and was preparing to come back for her.
Jessie pressed her lips into a smile. ’She certainly hadn’t asked Victor to report his itinerary to her. He was doing this all on his own; it had nothing to do with her.’
Victor Morgan had booked a table at a restaurant on a river cruise.
It would be nice to see the city lights from a river cruise at night, after all.
Jessie changed into a short black cocktail dress, accessorized with a lustrous set of pearls, and slipped on a pair of low-heeled, pointed-toe shoes before boarding the cruise boat with Victor Morgan.
Their table by the window offered the best view.
When Jessie looked at Victor, her eyes filled with an undeniable sense of satisfaction.
’Getting a guy so utterly clueless about romance to do something this romantic was no small feat.’
Moreover, looking at the bouquet of classic, perfectly bloomed Karola roses placed beside her, Jessie was in a very good mood.
“There isn’t a private room, though. Are you okay with that?” Victor Morgan asked.
He had wanted to book the whole place out, but he felt that would have lacked a certain something.
Jessie couldn’t help but laugh. “This is perfect.”
Suddenly, at that very moment, all the lights on the boat went out.
