Chapter 87: Chapter 87: “Fuck Buddy
Cyrus Sheridan also noticed Jessie Sterling’s white Lamborghini just then. He could tell the person in the driver’s seat was a woman.
His expression soured slightly. He turned to Lynn Jennings. “Fine. Then I’ll wait for you to come back tonight, and we can talk about… us.”
Lynn Jennings: “I have plans tonight. Dr. Sheridan, I’ll see you the day after tomorrow.”
After saying this, Lynn Jennings turned without a second thought and walked toward Jessie Sterling’s Lamborghini.
As Lynn approached, Jessie unlocked the passenger door from inside. Once Lynn was settled in the car, Jessie asked curiously, “Shouldn’t I get out and say hello?”
“? You want to meet him?” Lynn Jennings raised an eyebrow.
“Isn’t that your boyfriend?” Jessie Sterling said. “Aren’t you going to introduce us?”
Lynn Jennings was caught off guard by the question, but she quickly recovered. “If I had to introduce you to every single one of my boyfriends, I’m afraid you wouldn’t have the time.”
Jessie Sterling: “…”
’That’s something only a true player would say.’
“Besides, who the hell said he’s my boyfriend? Didn’t you see him walk out of the research institute with me? He’s a colleague. Nothing more,” Lynn Jennings added.
Jessie Sterling hummed skeptically as she drove. “Yeah, right! Then tell me, why didn’t you answer my messages from before? I even asked your brother, and he said you didn’t return home after Victor Morgan and I left. You just kept extending your hotel stay.”
Hearing this, Lynn Jennings leaned back against the seat and crossed her arms. “Oh? Since when are you so concerned about me?”
Jessie Sterling: “Maybe since the night I left, when I happened to see something I wasn’t supposed to see on my way out?”
Lynn Jennings: “…”
She thought for a moment and knew exactly what Jessie was talking about.
A flash of annoyance crossed Lynn’s face. Then, as if throwing caution to the wind, she blurted out two words—
“Hookup buddy.”
At her words, Jessie Sterling nearly slammed on the brakes and burst into a fit of coughing.
“COUGH, COUGH, COUGH—”
Lynn Jennings: “…Seriously? Was that such a big reaction? Maybe I should drive next time? You’re a hazard on the road. I don’t want to die just yet.”
Jessie stopped at a red light and shot Lynn an exasperated look.
’Whose fault was this? Was she really the one to blame? Clearly, Lynn was the bigger problem here, right?’
“You…” Jessie started to say something, but swallowed her words. “Didn’t you used to actually date them? Even if it was short-term?”
The playgirl probably changed partners more often than Jessie changed her jewelry.
Lynn Jennings sighed. There was no point in hiding it now. “How is that the same? Cyrus Sheridan is a colleague I see every single day. Dating him would be too much trouble.”
Jessie Sterling: “…From what I can tell, he seems to want a real relationship with you.”
Both back in the United Kingdom and just now, Jessie felt that the man with Lynn didn’t seem to want to end their relationship.
Lynn Jennings chuckled at that. She turned and stared at Jessie for a long moment, long enough to make her friend uncomfortable, before finally speaking slowly. “What he wants… do I have to go along with it? But let’s not talk about him. Let’s talk about you. How was the honeymoon? Can your President Morgan… perform?”
The tables were suddenly turned on Jessie. Her face instantly grew hot. “What do you mean, ’perform’? Don’t be ridiculous.”
Lynn Jennings drew out an “Ohhh.” “So it seems President Morgan can perform. I was just worried, you know, because of his age! No ’sex life’ means no ’happy life.’ That’s my sage advice!”
Jessie Sterling: “…Just shut up.”
All bark and no bite—that pretty much described Jessie’s appearance right now.
“How are things at Scitech Pharma?” Jessie had chosen a Spanish restaurant. It was busy at lunch, and there were no private rooms, but she had reserved a table by the window with a view overlooking downtown Southaven.
Lynn Jennings took a sip of sparkling wine. She polished off the appetizers one by one, nodding as she ate, thinking Jessie had picked a great restaurant for lunch.
“It’s great,” she said in response to Jessie’s question, wiping her mouth while savoring the aftertaste of the paper-thin slice of ham. “My colleagues are easy to get along with, and I’m doing work I love. Nothing to complain about.”
“What about your family?” Jessie was still worried.
Lynn Jennings suddenly burst out laughing.
“What is it?” Jessie asked.
Lynn Jennings: “You’ve been out of the country, so you probably haven’t heard the big news about my family.”
“What news?”
“Don’t worry about me. No one in my family has time to spare me a thought right now,” Lynn said slowly. “They’re all busy cleaning up my brother’s mess.”
The service at the restaurant was a bit slow, so Lynn rolled some of the cheese from earlier in a slice of bread and took a bite. “After you and your President Morgan left, my second brother got into a fight with Miles Hollis.” Lynn waved her hand dismissively. “It was so embarrassing.”
“Huh? A fight?” Jessie was surprised. “Why?”
“What else? A woman, of course,” Lynn said, shaking her head. “You might not have noticed, but Cheryl Stuart was at your wedding. She wasn’t with my second brother, though; she came with Miles Hollis. I heard she met Miles back when she was still hanging around Brianna Hudson. My brother recently announced he’s single, didn’t he? He wants to find a wife from a family of equal standing to rival our older brother. I guess he never expected Cheryl to move so fast and find a new guy immediately after their breakup. He was coming out of his hotel room and happened to see Cheryl and Miles together. The scene… tsk tsk.”
Lynn Jennings explained the situation in a few words, but Jessie’s focus successfully drifted elsewhere.
“Wow, that’s impressive,” Jessie couldn’t help but remark. Even though she disliked Cheryl Stuart because of Arya Thorne, she had to admit, that was some move.
Getting Mason Walsh and Miles Hollis to fight over her? How was that not impressive?
Lynn couldn’t be bothered to correct Jessie’s focus and continued, “My brainless second brother… even if Cheryl wasn’t Miles Hollis’s official girlfriend, does throwing the first punch make him right? So the whole family has been busy dealing with his mess. Who has time to care that I’m working at the Scitech Pharma research institute?”
Jessie quickly moved past the Jennings family drama. “So isn’t this the perfect time for you to go back and take over the pharmaceutical factory?”
“Take over what?” Lynn sighed. “You know the factory was originally part of my mom’s dowry when she got married. Even though it’s been merged into the Jennings family’s assets, she’s still the majority shareholder. For now, at least, my mom hasn’t changed her mind about wanting to hand the business over to my second brother.”
“As for me… she probably thinks I’m closer to my dad’s side of the family. She’s worried that if I really took control, I’d just favor the Jenningses.”
Lynn’s tone was self-deprecating as she spoke.
She felt like she must be a first for a blended family. Other kids get doted on and spoiled, while she was the one everyone in her family was guarding against.
’How boring.’
