Chapter 208: Chapter 208: Pilot
At least you’ll be much warmer when you sleep.
Hearing this, Jessie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“Don’t worry,” Jessie said. “Even though there’s no central heating, they have electric heaters. It’s not like I’ll be living in a drafty house. It’s not that serious.”
But Victor couldn’t help but frown.
He could make do anywhere, but Jessie was different. She had never really endured any hardship growing up. He wondered if going to film this variety show was just her asking for trouble.
“If you feel the least bit uncomfortable, just come back,” Victor said.
Jessie pressed her lips together to hide a smile. ’He was the one who told me to go if I wanted to, and now he’s the one borrowing trouble over it.’
“I know, I know.” Jessie patted Victor’s shoulder, saying with a grand air, “I would never let myself be mistreated.”
Victor then handed Jessie the tote bag she was carrying for the trip. “There’s motion sickness medicine inside, and heat packs. They’re all things you might need on the road. Your thermos is in there too. It’s getting cold; a sip of hot water now and then will help a lot.”
Jessie said, “I know, I know. You’re nagging like a mother hen. Relax, I’m only gone for a week. I’ll be back before you know it. Don’t worry.”
Victor pushed a cart with several of Jessie’s suitcases toward the underground garage.
Jessie trailed a step behind, and walking beside her was the show’s cameraman.
The cameraman worked for Apex, so of course, he knew that the artist in front of him, who went by the pen name “Little Squid,” was his boss.
The cameraman was a little conflicted. He’d heard before he came that his boss’s family was very particular. Moreover, almost everyone knew about the time the boss’s husband had caused a huge stir by suing a group of people online for spreading rumors about her. So he knew how much her family valued their privacy.
But just now, he’d really had to fight the urge to keep the camera rolling.
As someone who’d watched his fair share of reality shows, the cameraman found the conversation between his boss and her husband fascinating. It sounded ordinary, but the warmth between them was something you could never fake for a TV drama.
So, the cameraman now asked Jessie in a low voice, “Boss, can we cut that last part into the pilot episode?”
Jessie: “Hmm?”
She had no idea what was so film-worthy about Victor’s mother-hen nagging.
The cameraman, however, misunderstood her and quickly explained, “President Morgan was in the shot. Are we allowed to film him?”
Actually, he was dying to be filming right now.
His boss had left the house with just a single shoulder bag, while her husband walked ahead, single-handedly pushing a cart with all the rest of her luggage.
’That broad back just radiated a sense of security.’
“It’s fine,” Jessie nodded. Victor had told her before that if she really did go film the show, he wouldn’t mind appearing on camera.
“Just blur his face in post-production,” Jessie said.
Even though Victor had agreed, she knew he didn’t really like appearing before the public like this. So naturally, she was willing to take extra steps to protect his privacy.
Meanwhile, Victor had reached the passenger van and was loading the suitcases.
When the man finished loading everything and then got into the van himself, the cameraman was momentarily bewildered.
Jessie was also a little surprised. “Aren’t you going to work?”
Victor: “I took the morning off. I’m not going in yet.”
“So what are you doing then? Seeing me off?” Jessie blinked.
Victor nodded. “I’m taking you to the airport.”
“Then how will you get back?”
Victor pointed to the Cullinan behind them. “Uncle Carter is following in his car. After I see you off at the airport, I’ll go straight to the office.”
Jessie smiled and looped her arm through Victor’s. This was hardly the time to tell him he was making a fuss and that she didn’t need anyone to see her off.
’Who doesn’t want to be on someone’s mind all the time?’
The thought of being separated from Victor made her reluctant to leave as the moment of their parting drew near.
“So when I come back, are you going to pick me up from the airport?”
“Do you even need to ask?” Victor said, his gaze lowered to her.
’If I’m not picking her up, who else would I be picking up?’
Jessie couldn’t help but smile, her eyes crinkling. “Well, don’t you forget.”
After they arrived at the airport, Victor got out of the van and stroked Jessie’s hair. “Let me know when you land safely, you hear?”
“I know.”
“And eat three meals a day. Don’t skip any.”
As if to deliberately provoke him, Jessie said with a wide grin, “Our show is all about being self-reliant. What if I don’t earn any money? Then I’ll have no money to eat.”
At her words, Victor’s brow furrowed, and his expression turned alarmingly serious.
“So you’ll just go hungry?” Victor asked, his expression one of clear disapproval.
After Jessie gave him a confirming nod, Victor said, “The premise of this show is unreasonable.”
Jessie had been holding back a laugh from the start, and now she finally failed, bursting out laughing right in front of the camera.
’How is he so adorable!’ If the timing weren’t so bad, she would have been tempted to kiss the man standing before her.
A staff member reminded Jessie that she should head to security, since they hadn’t left home very early and she still needed to go inside to meet up with the others.
Jessie opened her arms and hugged Victor.
He ran very warm. Even now, in the mid-October weather of Aethelburg, Victor was only wearing a long-sleeved shirt.
As Jessie hugged him, her cheek pressed against his chest, she could clearly feel the intense warmth radiating from him.
“Take care of yourself.” Victor’s voice rumbled from above her head. He gave her one last, tight squeeze before letting go.
Jessie waved to him, then walked through the security entrance.
The production team had bought all the tickets together; everyone was flying economy.
After passing through security, the first person Jessie saw was Jade Moyer, who was being mobbed by a crowd not far ahead.
She hadn’t known who Jade Moyer was, but a few days ago, the show’s official social media account had tagged all the cast members. Jessie had, of course, looked them up. ’What if I get there and don’t know a single person? How awkward would that be?’
Jade Moyer was, as expected, one of the most popular idols to come out of a talent show in the past two years.
Although she had tried to be low-key for her trip to the airport today, fans had still recognized her instantly at the security checkpoint.
The moment she came out, she was immediately swarmed by them.
Jessie glanced over but didn’t go join the commotion. She skirted the crowd and found a coffee shop on the second floor near her boarding gate to wait.
