Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Noob Squabble
Jessie Sterling hadn’t even finished reading the page before she slammed the laptop shut in a rage.
“Do they all just love to lie through their teeth?!” Jessie was completely baffled. “I’m so mad! What do they mean, some D-list influencer?! I haven’t even done anything!”
Lynn Jennings was about to comfort her. She was going to say that many of the commenters were young, and most were fans—a notoriously irrational bunch. If Jessie didn’t like it, why not just have someone get the hashtag taken down?
But Lynn had barely gotten a word out when Jessie, sitting beside her, flipped the laptop open again and began clattering away at the keyboard.
Lynn leaned over to look and felt her own head start to buzz.
“You’re the D-list influencer! Your whole family are influencers!”
“So what if I’m not famous? Is it any of your business?! Who asked for a beauty contest! Did I agree to it?!”
“Are you so famous? Then tell me your name, let’s hear how famous you really are?!”
Jessie huffily replied to the commenters, kicking off a flame war.
Lynn looked at the replies Jessie had just posted from her own account and felt an urge to stare up at the heavens.
’Her arguments have absolutely no bite. These replies aren’t just toothless, they’re actually kind of cute and funny.’
“I’m so mad!” Jessie said indignantly, then took out her phone and started messaging someone.
From Lynn’s angle, she could see exactly who Jessie was messaging.
’Yep, she’s tattling to Quincy.’
Lynn finally had a chance to take her laptop back from Jessie and saw that someone had already replied to Jessie’s earlier retorts.
“Could it be the real person?”
The IP address was from the United States, so it really did look like it was her.
In addition to replies from random passersby, there were also responses from the fanbases of both celebrities, reacting to Jessie’s retorts.
The things the latter group posted online, however, were exceptionally vicious and unhinged.
Lynn didn’t let Jessie see these messages. The girl beside her looked ready to smash her phone’s on-screen keyboard, her fingers nearly red from jabbing at it.
“Okay!” After about ten minutes, Jessie finally looked up from her phone, a triumphant look on her face. “Quincy said she’ll handle it for me right now. Those people are so annoying!”
Lynn closed the laptop, afraid Jessie would get a sudden whim to scroll through the comments again. She was worried Jessie would try to battle people online, only to realize she was losing, get insulted, block them, and then be left to stew and curse them under her breath.
’That would just make her look so pathetic.’
“Is telling Quincy enough?” Lynn asked.
A hesitant look appeared on Jessie’s face. “Should I tell my mom and dad, too?”
’I’m a grown woman. Running to my parents over every little thing… isn’t that a bit… pathetic?!’
’Of course, telling my younger sister is different!’
Jessie thought, full of self-righteous conviction.
Lynn said, “…Tell President Morgan.”
“Victor Morgan’s corporate PR team is incredible, way better than any of those entertainment companies. Besides, you know his company’s legal team is famous, right? With all these online rumors, your President Morgan could have them on their knees begging for forgiveness in minutes,” Lynn earnestly explained to the little cutie in front of her.
Jessie: “…”
’So tempting.’
“But I don’t know him that well,” Jessie said, frustrated.
She and Victor Morgan had only met less than five times in total. How could she have the nerve to bother him now?
Lynn said, “You’re an engaged couple who have slept in the same room. How are you ’not that well acquainted’?”
“No, we didn’t!” Jessie almost exploded when she heard that. She bit her lip. “I was sleeping alone in the courtyard and got scared, so I asked him to stay with me. He left after I fell asleep, okay? Besides, while I was sleeping, he was still handling work matters. He’s a total workaholic. What do you mean, ’slept in the same room’? Lynn Jennings, don’t talk nonsense!”
Watching the little peacock, who had suddenly become so agitated, Lynn couldn’t help but let out a small, amused smile.
Jessie puffed out her cheeks, let out a “Hmph!”, and turned her back on Lynn.
Her phone let out a DING.
Jessie looked down. When she saw who the message was from, her eyes went wide and she let out a small gasp.
This time, she didn’t wait for Lynn to coax her. She whipped around, holding out her phone to the very person she’d been prepared to give the silent treatment to for a full minute, and said excitedly, “Victor Morgan just messaged me! He said he already had people clear the topic!”
Jessie’s adorably round face was full of pride.
Lynn refused to indulge her. Though she was happy for her on the inside, she put on a cool, aloof expression. “Didn’t you say you don’t know him that well? Isn’t President Morgan being a little nosy? Didn’t Quincy say she was already arranging for someone to handle it for you?”
Jessie huffed twice. “What do you mean, nosy? Don’t be ridiculous.”
Lynn: “…”
’Who said women aren’t fickle?’
She opened the laptop. Sure enough, the topic that had been a hotbed of discussion just moments before had now vanished from the internet without a trace.
Even the photo that was originally posted by the influencer with millions of followers could no longer be found on Xiaohongshu.
Lynn couldn’t help but sigh. “Fortune really does favor the foolish. Your President Morgan is impressively efficient.”
To be able to scrub all traces of Jessie from the internet in such a short time, Victor Morgan might have realized Jessie had been dragged into a fan war even before she did.
Jessie pretended not to hear what Lynn just said and leaned over to look at the laptop screen too. Sure enough, the trending topics list was now completely clean. There was nothing.
Even searching for the keywords yielded no results.
Jessie chuckled, then looked at her phone.
[Quincy Sterling: ? Someone helped you? I just got in touch with someone to clear the hashtag, and the posts on the feed are already gone?]
[Quincy Sterling: Who was it? Lynn?]
[Quincy Sterling: Or your brother-in-law?]
Jessie: “…”
’Sometimes, Quincy being so smart isn’t a good thing.’
[Jessie Sterling: Victor Morgan.]
[Quincy Sterling: Why’d you ask me if you were gonna ask your brother-in-law? He’s amazing!]
Jessie looked at the little bear profile picture of the person messaging her, feeling a little smug. This was the second time she felt that Victor Morgan really knew what he was doing. She hadn’t even said anything to him yet, and he had already stepped in and smoothed everything over.
Realizing she still hadn’t replied to Victor Morgan’s earlier message, Jessie quickly switched to her chat window with him.
