Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Hidden Danger
Jessie Sterling went to the concert with Lynn Jennings as planned.
After it was over, Jessie noticed several missed calls on her silenced phone.
One of them was from Keith Reese, whose call she had answered not long ago.
Jessie hadn’t actively looked for Julian Grant, but she knew he had been in the wine cellar these past few days.
Julian Grant owned a bar, a fact he hadn’t told many people. He had invested in it before he went abroad to study, and he would go there to drink alone whenever he was in a bad mood.
And this time, Julian had hidden himself away directly in the bar’s basement wine cellar, which was why Keith Reese and the others couldn’t find him at all.
She knew this, of course, because in her past life, the moment she heard Julian had disappeared, she had practically scoured every inch of Southaven on foot before finally being the first to find him in that wine cellar.
She just didn’t like Julian anymore. It wasn’t like she actually wanted to see him die.
It had been three days since Julian’s disappearance. Jessie didn’t have to try hard to imagine that he had probably been drinking himself into a stupor in the wine cellar all this time.
He was the owner of the bar, so the staff he’d hired probably didn’t dare do anything about it.
She had been willing to give Keith Reese the address simply out of consideration for their past friendship.
Among the missed calls was one from Julian Grant. But Jessie merely glanced at it before putting her phone back in her clutch.
Lynn Jennings had also received quite a few messages on her phone. Walking beside Jessie, she didn’t bring the topic up, nor did she ask how Jessie knew Julian was in the bar’s wine cellar. In any case, Julian had now been found by his friends, so the matter should be considered closed.
“Are you sure you’re not eating dinner?” Jessie asked, pressing a button on her car key. The doors of the nearby Lamborghini opened.
Lynn Jennings nodded. “No, I’m good. I have vegetables at home; I’ll just have some lettuce and cucumber. What do you want to eat? I can go with you.”
Jessie replied, “Don’t worry about it. The housekeeper made dinner at my place, so I can just eat when I get back. I’ll give you a ride home first, then. Is it still the same apartment as before?”
“No,” Lynn Jennings said. “The single-story flat in Southaven.”
Jessie got into the car and asked casually, “Why’d you move? Isn’t your old apartment the closest to your research institute? The commute from Southaven must take a lot of time every day, right?”
Southaven was on the way to her own home, though.
Lynn Jennings fastened her seatbelt. Thinking about the reason she moved, she couldn’t help but rub the bridge of her nose. “Yeah, about an hour longer.”
“Then why don’t you move back?” Jessie didn’t understand why Lynn was going through all this trouble.
Lynn Jennings sighed. “Cyrus Sheridan has been to that place. He might be staking out the apartment waiting for me.”
“Huh?!” Jessie’s eyes widened. When Lynn stated a reason she had never considered, Jessie exclaimed, “What is he doing staking out your place?! That’s sick!”
Lynn Jennings: “…”
Jessie didn’t notice Lynn’s speechlessness. Her concern made her mind race, and it was instantly flooded with stories from the news.
“Men are such an unstable element. Even if you were going to sleep with him, couldn’t you just go to a hotel? Did you have to bring him to your place? You’re in a dangerous situation now. And he works at the same institute as you! Should you get a few bodyguards?” As Jessie spoke, she remembered that Victor Morgan had also arranged for people to stay near her. She was about to suggest asking Victor to recommend a few men when Lynn cut her off.
“No, he just wants to get married.”
“???”
Jessie was completely stunned. She turned the steering wheel, and seeing no cars behind her, pulled over to the side of the road.
“What did you say?!” Jessie thought she was hearing things. She had specifically stopped the car to look at Lynn and ask again.
Lynn Jennings: “…Marriage. He wants to get married.”
Jessie Sterling: “…”
The car fell silent. An eerie, strange silence.
“So, what about you?” Jessie asked, looking at Lynn tentatively.
Lynn Jennings rolled her eyes. “Why are you looking at me like that? How could I possibly get married?”
Ever since high school, she had been very clear that she would never get married in her lifetime.
Lynn might have hesitated in the past. While not wanting to marry was her own wish, she had spent her youth patching things up for the family. If they had needed her to secure an alliance through marriage, she might have actually agreed.
But after the first time the family assets were divided, Lynn no longer felt any such conflict.
Jessie’s lips moved. “Did you make it clear to him, then?”
Lynn grunted in affirmation. “I told him from the start it was just a friends-with-benefits thing. I don’t know what’s gotten into him. He’s insisting I took advantage of him because it was his first time and that I have to take responsibility. He’s insane! From what I saw, he seemed to be enjoying himself just fine, didn’t he? And he has the nerve to say *I* took advantage?”
Jessie Sterling: “…”
’This… Can she really say things like that?’
She suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for Cyrus Sheridan, who was probably still waiting outside Lynn’s apartment. She silently lit a candle for him in her heart.
Lynn Jennings: “What are you still stopped here for? Waiting for a delivery?”
Jessie Sterling: “…”
’Whatever,’ Jessie thought. ’Why should I worry about the affairs of a queen of the sea?’
Jessie smoothly drove Lynn back to the parking lot of her single-story flat’s complex in Southaven, then slowly made her way home.
It wasn’t early anymore; it was already evening.
The winter sky grew dark much earlier. Jessie didn’t have much of an appetite when she got home. After drinking a bowl of rich pork and bamboo shoot soup, she went upstairs.
No one was home. It was the end of the year, so banking business was busy; Director Sterling and her second brother were still at the company. Faye Fuller had told Jessie that morning that she was going to an alumni reunion that evening and wouldn’t be home.
It was a good chance for Jessie to go to her room and work.
She hadn’t drawn in a few days, so Jessie thought she might have some artist’s block. But there was plenty of material from the wedding. The next time she looked up at the clock, it was already past ten.
Jessie rolled her neck, feeling a wave of stiffness.
She put down her stylus and looked at the latest comic strip she had just finished. It was the scene of her arriving at the wedding on a swing hanging from a helicopter.
Another strip showed her scuba diving with Victor Morgan, followed by a scene of him personally cooking for her.
The man was dressed in casual clothes but wore an apron over them. He had a sharp profile, but the most eye-catching detail was the sparkling diamond stud in his ear.
He looked ascetic and sexy, yet also gave off the air of a devoted husband.
It was a contradiction, but on a man like him, it all seemed to harmonize perfectly.
Jessie was extremely satisfied. She quickly posted both new strips online.
She didn’t notice that her website’s backend was already flooded with messages.
Jessie didn’t click on them, assuming they were just the lingering effect from the time she held a cash giveaway on Weibo, which Lynn and her second brother had then hyped up.
