Chapter 198: The Promise from Back Then
Chapter 198: Chapter 198: The Promise from Back Then
Victor Morgan was stumped by Jessie Sterling’s question.
’He’d actually thought the flowers would perfectly fill his Cullinan. Lately, it had become his favorite car to drive to and from work.’
But it was only after having the flowers delivered that he remembered the Valhalla’s interior wasn’t very spacious.
The tulips he’d brought had filled nearly the entire car, leaving absolutely no room for Jessie to sit.
Now that Jessie had pointed it out, Victor was dumbfounded.
Jessie didn’t miss the flicker of astonishment in Victor’s eyes, even though it was gone in a flash.
She couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
’Who knew that a man who seemed so reliable could be so clumsy when attempting something romantic.’
But she actually found this side of Victor rather cute.
“I think it looks quite nice just like this,” Jessie said. “Did you drive here?”
Victor was clearly relieved. He had been afraid that the surprise he’d gone to such lengths to prepare for Jessie would be ruined by his own oversight.
“I did,” Victor said. He had to pick Jessie up for dinner today, so of course he’d driven over.
“Then why don’t we leave your car here for now?” Jessie asked.
It would be a little strange if they both drove their own cars to dinner.
Before Victor could say anything, Jessie frowned again. “No, that won’t work. What about my flowers?!”
Seeing her so distressed over a car full of flowers, Victor debated whether he should tell her that a similar surprise was waiting at home. Even if Jessie didn’t drive her car back tonight, she would still be able to fall asleep surrounded by a room full of tulips.
“Besides, won’t they wilt if they’re cooped up in here?” Jessie muttered.
Victor couldn’t bear to see her so conflicted and said, “Cut flowers only last a few days anyway. They’ll wilt eventually.”
As long as Jessie got to see them at their most beautiful, in full bloom, these flowers would have already fulfilled their mission of crossing the ocean.
Jessie stomped her foot. Of course, she knew cut flowers had a short lifespan, but these were a gift from Victor. She couldn’t bear the thought of them losing their brilliance so soon.
“…But you gave them to me,” Jessie mumbled, less to Victor and more to herself.
But Victor still heard her.
Victor stroked her head. “Then I’ll send you some every day, so you can always see fresh ones.”
It was only after he said this that Victor suddenly realized he might have been neglecting Jessie lately.
He knew Jessie loved surprises, gifts, and all things romantic. But since they got married, the romance he had provided was lacking.
The occasional outing, the rare surprise… he hadn’t done enough.
“Is there anywhere you’d like to go in the second half of the year? Didn’t you want to go skiing in the Alpinos before? Do you still want to?” Victor asked suddenly.
Jessie didn’t know how he had jumped from the topic of flowers to skiing. She looked bewildered. “Aren’t you busy?”
Victor replied, “I can still squeeze out a few days. Didn’t we talk about making up for our honeymoon? We might not be able to take a full month all at once, but three to five days is definitely doable.”
Jessie let Victor lead her toward a black Cullinan parked nearby, her mind still processing his words.
“Forget it, that’s too far. A few days would be too rushed, wouldn’t it? How about an island instead? A nearby one would be fine,” Jessie said.
Victor walked to the car and opened the passenger door for Jessie. On the seat was another large bouquet of tulips.
Imported, ruffled white tulips—simple, elegant, and utterly beautiful.
A look of clear surprise lit up Jessie’s eyes. She obviously hadn’t expected Victor to have another trick up his sleeve.
Victor smiled, then returned to Jessie’s earlier suggestion. “You want to go to an island?”
“Mhm, a domestic one, or maybe somewhere in Southeast Asia. The flights are convenient and short, so we’d have more time to enjoy ourselves,” Jessie said, hugging the bouquet.
Victor fastened his seatbelt. “Do you remember Brianna Hudson’s wedding?”
“What about it?” Jessie asked casually.
“If you count the time, the flowers on the island should be in bloom by now. Want to go?” Victor said.
Several images flashed through Jessie’s mind.
She had thought Brianna’s island wedding was beautiful—the azure sea, the vibrant, lush flowers… everything seemed so dreamlike.
Back then, Victor had asked her if she wanted something like that.
She had felt it was too much trouble for a fleeting whim of hers.
But now, meeting Victor’s gaze, Jessie suddenly realized that he might have actually done it.
Planted an entire private island full of flowers.
And now that they were in bloom, he was inviting her to go on vacation with him.
Silence fell in the car for a moment. Neither of them spoke.
Jessie seemed to be processing this revelation. She looked into the eyes of the man beside her, as if still in disbelief, and asked for confirmation, “Did you really plant the flowers?”
Victor’s reaction was calm. “Mhm. You liked them, didn’t you?”
“Just because I liked them, you went and did it!” Jessie couldn’t help but smile, her eyes sparkling. Her gaze on Victor was incredibly focused.
“Mhm.” Victor nodded. He had bought the island for vacations anyway, and he didn’t have any particular preferences. Since Jessie was envious of the flowers at someone else’s island wedding, he certainly wouldn’t let her only be able to envy others.
A wedding is temporary, but flowers cultivated on an island could be seen by Jessie whenever she wanted for the rest of her life.
Just as Victor finished nodding, he suddenly felt a warmth on his lips.
Jessie had unbuckled her seatbelt, leaned over from the passenger seat, and pressed a kiss to his lips.
’I love this so much!’ Jessie thought.
“A reward!” she said.
She beamed at Victor, and just as she was about to pull away, she suddenly felt a pressure on the back of her neck, as if someone was holding her in place. The force pulled her entire body forward in a sudden rush.
“This isn’t enough.”
Victor’s voice fell into Jessie’s ears at that same instant.
If Jessie hadn’t offered a “reward” herself, Victor might not have thought of this.
But his wife had already called it a reward. How could he not claim it properly?
The kiss Victor delivered was nothing like Jessie’s fleeting, dragonfly-light peck.
Jessie’s kiss had been a mix of comfort and reward, barely a brush of their lips, but Victor’s was far more fierce.
